Woman commits suicide

CHANDIGARH, Nov 23 — A resident of Mani Majra committed suicide reportedly after a tiff with her husband late this evening.

According to police sources, 23-year-old Shilpa, who was employed as a compounder with a local clinic, in a fit of rage hanged herself in her room after she had a verbal duel with her husband. They had been married for the past couple of years and were reportedly quarrelling frequently, sources added. Further investigations are on.

Eve-teasers caught
The police arrested four persons from various parts of the city for eve-teasing. Joginder Singh alias Chotu, and Rajnish Kumar alias Monu, residents of PGI Colony and Khuda Lahora, respectively, were arrested from near the Sector 14 bus stand.

Gaurav Kumar and Sitanshu Bakshi of Sector 15 were arrested from near DAV School in the same sector. Separate cases under Section 294 of the IPC have been registered at the police station west.

Suicide
A resident of Hallo Majra reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself. Police sources said 30-year-old Gauri, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, hanged herself by a nylon rope from the ceiling of her one-room house in the village.

Since the door was locked from inside, the police and residents had to break open the door to get in. The body has been sent to the General Hospital for a post mortem.

Sources said the family was in dire straits and the husband of the deceased was away to find work. Further investigations are on.

Held with liquor
The police nabbed three persons for possessing liquor above permissible limit. Biram of Bapu Dham Colony was arrested and 32 quarters of whisky were recovered from him.

Roshan Lal of Colony number 5 was arrested and 24 quarters of whisky were recovered from him. Kamla of Dadu Majra Colony was arrested for possessing 38 pouches of whisky.

Three arrested
Parmod Kumar and Sachdeva of Sector 35 and Tarun Bawa of Ram Darbar were arrested for quarelling at a public place. A case under Section 160 of the CrPC has been registered at the Sector 31 police station.

Stolen
Mr Mumtaz Ali of Palsora reported that his three-wheeler (CHV-368) was stolen from the village. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the sector 39 police station.

Kalka

Bus driver nabbed
The police recovered 60 bottles of liquor from the possession of Harish Chand from Solan district, the driver of a Himachal Roadways bus (HP-01-0372). He has been arrested and a case has been registered. He admitted that he had been smuggling liquor from Haryana and selling it in Himachal Pradesh at a higher price.

Haryanvi programme on Nov 27

PANCHKULA, Nov 23 — The Ghoomer Academy of Sector 11 will organise a Haryanavi Cultural Bonanza on November 27 at Yavnika in Sector 5 here. Addressing a press conference here today, the President of the academy, Mr R.D. Garg, said this was an effort to promote the culture of the state which was fast losing out to the growing popularity of western music and dance.

The two-hour programme will entail a ragini competition, a panorama of Haryanavi folk dances, performance of Haryanavi orchestra which will have 15 to 20 instruments and skits by well-known artistes of the state. The artistes who will perform at the ragini contest include Mr Prem Dehati, Ms Sarita Chaudhary, Ms Jyoti Jaipuri, Ms Rajnish and Mr Rajinder Kharkia, while Mr Mahavir Guddu and his troupe will present a comedy at the function. The function is being organised in collaboration with the All India Radio, Rohtak.

With chapters in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat, the idea behind establishing the Haryana chapter was not only to create an awareness about folk songs and dances in the state but also arrange cultural exchange programmes with other states.

Mr Garg said though the academy had been a self-financing one till now, a request had been made to the Government of India to finance the workshops organised from time to time and promote cultural exchanges between the various states.

He also said coaches from the academy had been working in collaboration with the Northern Zone Cultural Centre to prepare a team of ghoomer dancers for the Republic Day function to be held in New Delhi.Back

 


TT tips from ex-national champions

CHANDIGARH, Nov 23 — Meet Monalisa Mehta, former national table tennis champion who hit the headlines in 1985 by becoming India number one and later got married to Kamlesh Mehta, another TT player of prominence of yesteryear. Both are here in connection with the ongoing 61st junior national TT championships at the Sector 23 hall and busy giving tips to the players.

Kamlesh is now Indian coach and is actively associated with the sport. Monalisa also provides training to players at Matunga Gymkhana at Mumbai.

Monalisa, who originally belongs to Guwahati ( Assam), took to game in 1974 under the coaching of late Nihal Singh Thakur, became the sub-junior national champion in 1976. She shocked the great player of those days Indu Puri which brought her into limelight. In those days, there was no tournament conducted for the cadet (under 12) section and players like Kashmira Patel and Kalawati were in command of the game in India.

It was in 1985 when she bagged the women’s title, and in 1987 remained the runner-up by losing to Niyati Puri. She was also the national games champion in 1987 held at Trivandrum and in 1988 she was picked up by Oil India Ltd .

Monalisa bid farewell to the game in 1994 but before that helped the country in winning a gold medal in the 1991 SAF games at Colombo.

In the present nationals, both are concentrating on Maharashtra players. Monalisa is also giving helpful tips to Assamese players with whom she has special affinity. Winner of Arjuna awards, the couple has seven-year-old son Suvrat and daughter Sneha who is 3.

When asked about the not-so-good performance of women players abroad, Monalisa said girls are not able to get much international exposure. Sometimes parents are not willing to send them abroad. One needs to take part in many tournaments in order to be more confident and versatile.

Kamlesh was the national champion for eight consecutive years. He will be again busy for the national camp in February in preparation for the World Cup scheduled to be held in February 2000 in Malaysia.

Abhinav shoots bronze at Auckland

Chandigarh, Nov 23 — Abhinav Bindra of Chandigarh added another feather to his cap when he got the bronze medal in the third Commonwealth Shooting Championship being played at Auckland (New Zealand) where leading shooters of the world are taking part.

Abhinav had a score of 682.6, whereas, the gold medal winner's score card read 683. Abhinav thus narrowly missed the gold medal. Abhinav's and P. Palammgappa scored 682.9 and got the team medal in the air rifle (ISSU) 10 m event with Deshmukh scoring 577/600. The gold medal went to Malaysia.

St John's win
Host St John's High School continued its winning spree when today it won the Under-10 Blessed Edmund Rice Inter-School Cricket Tournament being held here.

Karan Dhanoa scored 47 runs and helped St John's beat Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, by three wickets.

Batting first, YPS score 105 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs with Gurkeerat Singh scoring 35 runs. Rahul Balshi and Saranjeet Singh got two wickets each.

In reply, St John's school achieved the target with three wickets still in hand. Karan made 47 runs and Ishdeep Singh took two wickets for 11 runs.

Badminton court
A new cemented badminton court was inaugurated at Chandigarh Press Club here today by Mr Sampat Singh, Finance Minister of Haryana. Members of the club, of late, have been demanding more such facilities. Mr Sampat Singh played with the members and some prominent players like Saroj Chaudhary, Himachal Pradesh's women's badminton champion who had been specially called for this moment.

Later, the said journalists who had a tough task to perform benefited by playing. He also said Haryana had begun to give more importance to sport in particular. He said the state would soon announce a policy for budding sportspersons. He also said after the age of 18 when players began to worry about job placements, the Haryana Government would come to their rescue.

Haryana had produced many outstanding players in the past in volleyball, women's hockey, wrestling an other disciplines, the minister said.

School cricket
Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, defeated DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, by 12 runs in the UT Inter-School Under-19 Cricket Tournament being played here. SPS-44 batted first and made 129 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 25 overs. Ravi Verma and Amit made 41 and 34 runs, respectively, for SPS-44. In reply, DAV-8 made 117 runs in 24.2 overs and were all out. Anil scored 22 runs and Sanjay 22 runs. Sanjeev Yadav took four wickets in 19 runs.

Meanwhile, team in charge of DAV School, Sector 8, complained in writing today to the Secretary of the UT Inter-School Cricket Tournament (boys) regarding an objection raised against a player Abhishek Negi of Sanjay School whose actual name according to the complainant is Sunil Kumar.Back
