CHANDIGARH, Nov 23 Meet Monalisa Mehta, former national table tennis champion who hit the headlines in 1985 by becoming India number one and later got married to Kamlesh Mehta, another TT player of prominence of yesteryear. Both are here in connection with the ongoing 61st junior national TT championships at the Sector 23 hall and busy giving tips to the players. Kamlesh is now Indian coach and is actively associated with the sport. Monalisa also provides training to players at Matunga Gymkhana at Mumbai. Monalisa, who originally belongs to Guwahati ( Assam), took to game in 1974 under the coaching of late Nihal Singh Thakur, became the sub-junior national champion in 1976. She shocked the great player of those days Indu Puri which brought her into limelight. In those days, there was no tournament conducted for the cadet (under 12) section and players like Kashmira Patel and Kalawati were in command of the game in India. It was in 1985 when she bagged the womens title, and in 1987 remained the runner-up by losing to Niyati Puri. She was also the national games champion in 1987 held at Trivandrum and in 1988 she was picked up by Oil India Ltd . Monalisa bid farewell to the game in 1994 but before that helped the country in winning a gold medal in the 1991 SAF games at Colombo. In the present nationals, both are concentrating on Maharashtra players. Monalisa is also giving helpful tips to Assamese players with whom she has special affinity. Winner of Arjuna awards, the couple has seven-year-old son Suvrat and daughter Sneha who is 3. When asked about the not-so-good performance of women players abroad, Monalisa said girls are not able to get much international exposure. Sometimes parents are not willing to send them abroad. One needs to take part in many tournaments in order to be more confident and versatile. Kamlesh was the national champion for eight consecutive years. He will be again busy for the national camp in February in preparation for the World Cup scheduled to be held in February 2000 in Malaysia. Abhinav shoots bronze at
Auckland Chandigarh, Nov 23 Abhinav Bindra of Chandigarh added another feather to his cap when he got the bronze medal in the third Commonwealth Shooting Championship being played at Auckland (New Zealand) where leading shooters of the world are taking part. Abhinav had a score of 682.6, whereas, the gold medal winner's score card read 683. Abhinav thus narrowly missed the gold medal. Abhinav's and P. Palammgappa scored 682.9 and got the team medal in the air rifle (ISSU) 10 m event with Deshmukh scoring 577/600. The gold medal went to Malaysia. St John's win Karan Dhanoa scored 47 runs and helped St John's beat Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, by three wickets. Batting first, YPS score 105 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs with Gurkeerat Singh scoring 35 runs. Rahul Balshi and Saranjeet Singh got two wickets each. In reply, St John's school achieved the target with three wickets still in hand. Karan made 47 runs and Ishdeep Singh took two wickets for 11 runs.
