AMRITSAR
Head appointed:
Prof Major Singh has been appointed Head of the Department of the Chemical Sciences and Technology of Guru Nanak Dev University by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr H.S. Soch, in place of Dr S.S. Parmar, from November 26 onwards. He will continue to function till September 30, 2001, according to an official press statement issued by the university here on Wednesday.

Workshop: A day's workshop on patent awareness will be organised at the conference hall of Guru Nanak Bhavan at Guru Nanak Dev University here on Monday. The workshop will jointly be organised by Guru Nanak Dev University and the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, with the help of the Technology Information. Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Communal harmony:
National integration week was celebrated at Ashoka Senior Secondary School here on Thursday. Mr V.K. Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, while addressing the gathering urged to maintain communal harmony and highlighted the sacrifice made by our forefathers during the independence struggle.

Case registered: The district police has registered a case against two dismissed patwaris Pritpal Singh and Amrik Singh on the recommendation of the Deputy Commissioner. Mr V.K. Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, said the field kanungo of Bassi Pathana, Mr Harminder Singh, had complained that the patwaris had locked his office and assaulted him. Patwaris were harassing him as he had refused to participate in the strike call given by them. The DC said Assistant Commissioner was directed to conduct an inquiry, and the two were found guilty.

GURDASPUR
Trucks collision:
Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir died on the spot, whereas, Jarnail Singh, Manjeet Singh and Ramesh Kumar, all residents of Awankha village near Dena Nagar of the district were injured when the two trucks coming from opposite direction collided with each other near Sathial, 13 km from here on Friday. All injured were rushed to the local Civil Hospital for treatment.

HOSHIARPUR
Amount released:
A sum of Rs 2245.90 lakh has been received for various developmental works to be carried out by the local district Planning and Development Board. A sum of Rs 1372.26 lakh has been released to various departments. This was disclosed by Raghubir Singh, Transport Minister cum-Chairman of the District Planning and Development Board, while presiding over the boards' meeting here on Thursday.

LUDHIANA
Senior citizens day:
The State Bank of India, Dugri road branch, celebrated the Senior Citizens Day by distributing woollens among the bank pensioners, here on Wednesday. Mr V.K. Sharma, Branch Manager, assured of the best customer service and highlighted the various deposit and loan schemes of the bank.

Shawls donated: As a part of its community service staff led by Mr S.S. Sharma, AGM, State Bank of India, overseas branch, distributed shawls and fruits to inmates of the Rehabilitation Centre for Blind, Jamalpur, here on Wednesday.

Journalists meeting: Local journalists on Wednesday condemned the assault on a journalist of Jalandhar by the police, while he was performing his official duty. In a meeting they urged the Chief Minister to take action against the guilty police official and ensure that the freedom of the press was not jeopardised.

Seminar: A seminar on "New Life Style Through Spiritual Empowerment", was organised by the Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwavidyalaya, here on Wednesday. Mr B.K. Nirwair, managing trustee of Global Hospital and Research Centre, Mount Abu, and secretary general of Brahmakumaris addressed the gatherings. Mr Lala Lajpat Rai, Member of the Rajya Sabha, was the chief guest.

Cyclone relief:
Dr Darshan Singh Bedi, Principal, Shivalik Public School, said here on Wednesday that students and staff of the school had collected a sum of Rs 40,000 and sent atleast 380 blankets and clothes for Orissa cyclone victims. Meanwhile, students of Guru Nank Mission Public School, Nursing School and Nursing College being run by the Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Education Trust, Hah Kaleran sent blankets clothes and other relief material worth Rs 1 lakh for the cyclone victims on Thursday according to Ms Sushil Kaur, PRO.

Plots demanded: The Janta Rehri Market, Mani Majra, on Friday demanded that plots be allotted to all vendors of the market without delay. Mr Satpal, President of the market, said if the allotment was not made immediately, vendors would gherao the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

Competitions: As part of the Lala Lajpat Rai Martyrdom Fortnight, the Servants of the People Society, Lala Lajpat Rai Bhavan, Sector 15, organised on Friday cartoon-drawing and slogan-writing competitions on drug abuse and alcoholism and the growing danger of HIV/AIDS in the country. A total of 52 college students participated.

Talk: Maj-Gen Himmat Singh Gill (retd), Chairman of the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi, delivered on Friday a talk on 'The Writing of a Novel and Poetry' at Government College for Girls, Sector 11. It was followed by a question answer session.

Lecture: The Department of English, Government College, Sector 11, organised on Friday a talk and discussion on 'Modern English Poetry'. The guest lecture was delivered by Dr (Ms) Manju Jaidka of the Department of English, Panjab University.

Urged:
The local anti-encroachment committee on Friday urged the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority to fix charges for removal of fences and hedges raised by residents outside their houses. The charges could be fixed on the pattern of the Haryana Urban Development Authority, said Mr N.S. Minhas, President of the committee.

Fast: Members of the Godrej-GE Employees Union sat on fast in support of their demands on Friday. A rally by members of the union and other labour unions of the town was also held in front of the local office of the State Labour Department.

Donated: The Mohali Industries Association donated 300 tarpaulins for the cyclone victims in Orissa. These were handed over to the Subdivisional Magistrate, Mr O.P. Popli, at a function held on Friday.top

Gold medal awarded:
The Principal of GSRD Senior Secondary School, Mr Shanker Kashyap, was awarded a gold medal in recognition of his services by the management on the concluding day of the golden jubilee celebration of the school. The sabha president, Mr Dharampal, donated Rs 51,000 on the occasion.

FARIDABAD
Janata darbar:
The Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, will organise a "janata darbar" at Palwal on December 2. Mr Anand Mohan Sharan, Deputy Commissioner, will hold a meeting of the district officers of various department on November 29. He has instructed the officers to meet the people of their respective areas, and listen their grievances, on Wednesday.

"Muskaan -2000":
A child health care programme "Muskaan-2000" was launched on Friday to conduct the check-up of all children upto the age of 14 years by the year 2000, in Mahendragarh district of Haryana. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr V.Raja Sekhar, said vitamin supplements, tonics and medicines to deworm the children would be distributed free of cost besides analysing the growth pattern of the children under the programme.

PANIPAT
Polluted water
: The contaminated water released by the dying houses of the factories continues to create problems for residents of a number of colonies in the town. The polluted water entered into houses of the local Parshuram Colony, here on Wednesday. The Subdivisional Magistrate rushed to the site and got the water drained out with the help of the fire tenders.

SIRSA
One killed:
Amit (20), was killed in a road accident, on Wednesday. According to the information Amit and his friend were coming from Ludhiana when their car smashed into a tree on the roadside. The injured was admitted to a local civil hospital for treatment.

Five arrested: In two different raids the district police has arrested five persons. According to the information given by the police Joginder Pal of Maujgarh village and Dharampal of Khuian Malkana village were arrested on a charge of gambling. Mani Ratnam of Nepal was arrested under Gambling Act from Kalawali Bus stand. Jagdish of Rania and Jasbir of Balasar were also arrested for smuggling liquor in a car.

Chairman appointed: The newly appointed chairman of the State Freedom Fighters Samman Samiti, Mr Pat Ram Verma, said there on Thursday that he would try to educate the present generation about the freedom struggle and sacrifices made for it. He said nearly 3,000 freedom fighters, including 2,000 INA soldiers were left in the state. "I will see to it that benefits announced by the Central and the State Government reaches the freedom fighters," he said.

Two arrested: Ram Murti and Gopi Ram of Shapur village were arrested on Thursday. According to sources, the accused along with two others had assaulted Ganesharam of Shahpur Begu village on November 19, while he was going to his home with his grandson. He was admitted to the Civil Hospital and a criminal case under Sections 307, 324, 34 of the IPC was registered against accused.

Reception: Justice M.S. Gill of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, was given a reception by the judges of the district courts advocates and district administration here at the local PWD Rest House on his first visit to the district on Thursday.

SONEPAT
Girl traced:
The Ganaur police on Friday claimed to have traced a 13-year-old girl, Mamta of Rajpur village, who was allegedly kidnapped by a youth on November 23, when she along with her family members, had gone to Kheri Gujjar village to take a holy dip into the Satkumbha tank, on the occasion of Kartika Purnima. Mr K.P. Singh, SP, said Farooq a resident of Jhirothi village in UP was arrested in this connection. Whereas, his associate Gulab of Rajpur village was still at large and hunt was on to apprehend him.

Murder case: The Kharkhauda police on Friday claimed to have solved an alleged murder of Dinesh a youth of Khanda village whose body was recovered from a well of the village on October 30. Mr K.P. Singh, SP, said here on Friday that the police had arrested Pale Ram, Kaptan and Shamsher, all residents of the same village.

Demand: The Daily Railway Passengers Welfare Association on Friday urged the railways to reintroduce the EMU shuttle train between Delhi and Panipat. The association also demanded immediate steps for the improvement in train services on the DUK section of the Northern Railway as most of the long-distance and suburban trains were running behind the schedule, daily.

Karamchari manch: The Haryana State Power Karamchari Manch on Friday urged the state government to regularise the services of part-time employees and grant bonus for the year 1998-1999 to all employees. In a press note it also demanded removal of all anomalies in the pay-scale of the employees. The manch also warned that if the demands were not accepted, it would launch an agitation against the state government.

Kidnapped: A Dalit student of fifth class was reportedly kidnapped by some persons from the school at Garhi Ujale Khan village near Gohana town on Wednesday. According to a report reaching here, the kidnappers have allegedly demanded a ransom from his mother a resident of Nuran Khera village.

Stolen: A Tata Sumo van was reportedly stolen from Kishanpura at Ganaur Mandi, 16 km from here on Thursday. According to a report, Parveen Kumar of Kunjpura (Karnal) had parked the van outside his house. A case has been registered.

HAMIRPUR
Brother missing:
Mr Purshattam Dass, a resident of Patnaun village of the district has been moving from pillar to post to locate his brother, Mr Birbal, a compressor operator working with the Tounidevi division of the HP, PWD. Birbal had gone to attend to his duties at Kakker village on October 12 but failed to return. Mr Dass alleged that his brother was time and again made to suffer at the hands of Assistant Engineer, HP, PWD, and Tounidevi.

JAWALAMUKHI
Subjudge court:
The Dehra subdivision of Kangra district will have yet another court of sub judge. It will start functioning from December 6 according to an official spokesman. Henceforth, two courts will function in this subdivision. The Sessions Judge of the Kangra district , Mr V.K. Ahuja, will inaugurate the court on December 6. The Deputy Commissioner of Kangra, Mr V.K. Aggarwal, will preside.

NURPUR
Body found:
The local police has found a decomposed body of 60-year-old woman in a deserted place at Odhari village near Kotla on Wednesday. The body has not been identified so far.

SHIMLA
Merger resented:
The proposed move to merge the Department of Town and Country Planning with the Urban Development Department has been opposed by the non-gazetted employees of the Town and Country Planning office. The Executive Committee of the department met the Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr Mansa Ram, to lodge their protest against the move , here on Wednesday.
