Case of bid to trespass, rape

CHANDIGARH, Oct 2 — The police registered a case against Vasudev of Delhi, who accompanied by his accomplices, had trespassed the house of Mr Gurjit Singh of Badheri, and had tried to molest and rape the wife and daughters of the complainant. The police registered the case under Sections 454 and 354 of the IPC at the Sector 39 police station.

Cyclist killed: A cyclist, Arjun Singh, was hit and injured by a CTU bus (CH-O1-G-5536) near the Dhanas bridge. He was rushed to the PGI, where he succumbed to his injuries.

A case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 39 police station. The driver of the bus, Malkit Singh, has been arrested.

Wife harassed: Ms Soma Rani of Sarangpur lodged a complaint that she was maltreated and harassed for bringing inadequate dowry by her husband, Jatinder Kumar, of Delhi. The Crime Against Women Cell is investigating. A case under Sections 406 and 498-A, of the IPC has been registered at the police station west.

10 nabbed: The police arrested five persons for roaming under suspicious circumstances. Five persons were arrested for creating nuisance at a public place under the influence of liquor.

Liquor seized: The police arrested Sanjay Kumar of Mahesh Nagar in Ambala Cantonment for smuggling 1,500 pouches of illicit liquor. He was arrested near Dapper village.

The police also impounded a Fiat car (MGN-7976) used in the crime. A case under Section 61-1-14 of the Excise Act has been registered against him.

Offender held: The Lalru police arrested Jatinder Singh alias Bantu, of Rador in Yamunanagar, in Ludhiana. He was declared proclaimed offender by a Rajpura court in 1997.

Bantu and Jagdish Sharma had met with an accident in Lehli village near here on January 14, 1997, while carrying 180 bottles of illicit liquor in a Maruti car (HR-02-B-9438). Jagdish had died on the spot, while Bantu had slipped away, leaving the car behind.Back

Apples, oranges cheaper

CHANDIGARH, Oct 2 — The prices of a number of commonly used fruit have come down in the local market during the past four days.

During a survey of the local market it was found that if a kg of delicious variety of apple was available for Rs 40 just four days back, it could be purchased today for Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg. The wholesale price of the fruit has come down from Rs 350 to Rs 250 per 17 kg pack. Similarly, the ordinary golden variety of the fruit could be had for Rs 20 to Rs 25 a kg. There was, however, no downward trend in the price of the Kinnaur variety as it could be purchased today for Rs 50 a kg in retail and for Rs 600 per 17 kg pack in the wholesale market.

The price of pomegranate has also come down from Rs 50 to Rs 40 a kg during this period. The wholesale price of the fruit has come down from Rs 150 to Rs 120 per 3.5 kg pack. Grapes, however, were available at their old price of Rs 80 a kg in retail and for Rs 150 per 3 kg pack in the wholesale market.

'Kashmiri nakh' has become costlier as its price has increased from Rs 50 to Rs 60 a kg in retail and from Rs 700 to Rs 800 per 15-16 kg pack due to lesser arrivals from parts of Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir. There was no fluctuation in the price of guava as it could be had in the retail market for Rs 20 a kg and in the wholesale market for Rs 12 a kg.

'Baggugosha' too has become costly as its price has jumped from Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg during this period. The wholesale price of the fruit has increased from Rs 400 to Rs 500 per 14-15 kg pack. Pineapple, too, has become costly during this period. A piece of the fruit, priced at Rs 30 last week, could be purchased today for Rs 40.

On the other hand, orange has become cheaper as its price has dipped from Rs 60 to Rs 50 a dozen in retail and from Rs 500 to Rs 400 per 12 dozen of the fruit in the wholesale market. And at the same time mausambi price has shot up from Rs 50 to Rs 60 a dozen in retail market and from Rs 100 to Rs 120 per three dozens in the wholesale market.

Meanwhile, advanced variety of watermelon has registered its entry in the market with a price tag of Rs 15 a kg in retail and for Rs 12 a kg in the wholesale market.Back



 


Table tennis titles for Bhawan, SNS-22

CHANDIGARH, Oct 2 — Bhawan Vidyalya, Sector 27, and Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, bagged the girls' under-19 and boys' under-17 team table tennis titles, respectively, in the third CBSE Cluster Table Tennis Tournament for the year 1999-2000 by defeating Moti Ram Arya School, Sector 27, 3-0, and Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, 3-2, respectively, here at New Public School in Sector 18.

The third place in the boys' under-17 section went to Bhawan Vidyalya-27. New Public School, Sector 18, will meet Bhawan Vidyalya in the boys' under-19 final, while in girls' under-17 section, DAV Public School, Sector 8 will take on AKSIPS, Sector 41, in the other final. The third place in the girls' under-17 section went to Manav Mangal, Sector 21.

Football league: The Chandigarh police today defeated Golden Club, 3-0, in the Chandigarh Senior Football League being played here at GMSSS-23. Munish, Ajay and Paramjit were the scorers for the winners.

In another match, Manipur Students Football Club blanked out Young Football Club, 6-0. Nooren scored two goals, while Jayanta, Niranjan, Bidya and Inatomba scored one goal each for the winners.

Godrej-XI win: Godrej Cricket Club and PGI XI won their matches on the opening day of the third JAL Cricket Club Tournament being played here at the PGI grounds today.

GCC-XI beat Punjab Secretariat Cricket Club by 39 runs, thanks to a fine performance by Rajesh who scored 54 runs and took two wickets for 17 runs. In another match, PGI XI defeated CNS XI by 75 runs with Gurpreet of the winning team scoring 60 runs.

SD-32, Flankers ball badminton champs

CHANDIGARH, Oct 2 — SD Club, Sector 32, in men's and Flankers Ball Badminton Club in women's section, emerged victorious in the Chandigarh Senior Ball Badminton Championship which concluded here today at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

In the men's final, SD Club defeated Shivalik Club, 29-28, 29-9. Mukesh Sharma, Sonu, Lakhbir and Amit Chaudhary displayed good game for the winners and Sanjay and Vikrant for the losers.

In the women's final, Flankers BB Club defeated Chandigarh BB Academy, 29-24, 29-22. Anisha Bhatti, Monika, Shivani and Rajinder were the stars of the match for the winners and Sunita, Shweta, Monika and Jagdeep played well for the losers.

In the men's section, Mukesh, Sanjay Tiwari, Arun Kumar, Sonu Chaudhary and Vishal Singh were declared the best players of the tournament. In the women's section, Monika Panjla, Anisha, Shweta Vyas, Sonika and Monika were the best performers.

Kho-kho tourney: Government High School, Sector 32, will meet Shri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, in the girls' final of the under-17 kho-kho tournament for schools organised by the Sports Department of the Chandigarh Administration here at the Sector 42 sports complex.

In the boys' final, SGGS, Sector 35, will take on Government High School, Sector 32. Earlier in the girls' semi-final, GHS-32 defeated GHS-35 by an innings and nine points, while SGGSSS-35 beat IS Dev Samaj-21 by four points.

In the boys' semi-final, SGGSSS-35 won against GHS-35 by seven points, while GHS-32 beat GHKSMS-38 by four points. The finals will be played tomorrow at 3 pm.

Coaching camp: The Chandigarh Rifle Association will organise a 15-day coaching camp beginning tomorrow for the Chandigarh shooting team in all age groups at the Sector 25 shooting range. The team will take part in the ninth GV Mavlankar National Shooting Championship to be held at Ahmedabad later this month, according to Mr Vijay Pal Singh, Secretary of the association.

BBMB win: BBMB XI won the final against Punjab Engineering College, Sector 12, by seven wickets in the Friendship Cup Cricket Tournament here today.
