AMRITSAR
Free training:
The local branch of the All India Women's Conference, on Friday decided to impart free training of computer, tailoring, stenography, Punjabi, dress designing, English, fabric painting, skin and hair care to the next of kin of the woman inmates of the Central Jail.

Resentment: The Bio-Medical Teachers Association on Friday condemned the alleged dilly-dallying attitude of the state government towards their demands. In a press note issued here on Friday, Mr S.P.S. Hanjraa said though a high powered committee headed by the Chief Minister on December 6 had agreed in principle to give revised pay scales to them, nothing had been done so far in this regard.

Vivekanand Day: The Young Viveks Study Circle of Spring Dale Senior School here on Friday organised a show on Swami Vivekananda. The show was held to commemorate his famous Chicago address. The President of All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Dr Inderjit Kaur, presided over the function.

TV channel: The Shiromani Youth Akali Dal (Kahlon) on Friday urged to Bibi Jagir Kaur, that the SGPC should launch its own television channel. Mr Kuldip Singh Kahlon, President of the Youth Akali Dal, alleged that the arrangements between the SGPC and private TV channels to telecast "Gurbani" had disillusioned the Sikh devotees all over the world as these channels had failed to take off.

BATHINDA
Training camp:
The Southern Petrochemical Industry Corporation Limited (SPIC) and the Punjab State Agriculture Department organised a training camp for the farmers, at Bhai Rupa village. As many as 500 farmers participated in the camp. This was stated here on Friday by Mr Tarsem Bansal, Marketing Officer of the SPIC.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Bogus pensioners:
Mr V.K. Janjua, Deputy Commissioner, while addressing a "Lok Darbar" at Manaili village in Khamano Subdivision, on Friday, said a survey would be conducted to detect bogus pensioners. As many as 20,000 persons were getting pensions and the state government had disbursed Rs 1.50 crore upto 30th March, he added.

FEROZEPORE
Ex-servicemen's demand:
The local Senior Citizens (retired) Welfare Association has urged the Punjab Government to treat senior citizens on a par with other ex-servicemen. The President of the NRI's Association, Mr R.S. Bhalla, also demanded that the PSEB should call a meeting of the ex-servicemen after every three months to discuss their problems.

Telephone subscribers: The local telephone subscribers in a representation to the General Manager (Telecom) have demanded an early despatch of telephone bills. They alleged that bills sometimes reached them a day before the last date of payment.

Non-declaration of result: The local students who had appeared in the matriculation examination (March 1999) held under the Open School Scheme by the Punjab School Education Board were sore over non-declaration of their results. This was stated here on Friday by the Ferozepore Citizens Council Vice-President, Mr Amrik Singh.

Prohibitory order: The local District Magistrate, Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, has issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr P.C. throughout the district on October 6 and 7. The counting of votes in this Lok Sabha constituency will be held on these days.

JALANDHAR
Camp:
A blood donation camp was organised here on Friday by the group centre of the CRPF at Saraikhas. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Gurcharan Singh, Additional DIG , CRPF, Jalandhar range. Fortysix personnel of the CRPF donated blood.

Seminar:
A seminar on electroplating was organised under the aegis of the Ludhiana Electroplaters Association, and M's Development alternatives, New Delhi Mr N.S. Tiwana, Executive Director of the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology was the Chief Guest.

MOGA
Three injured:
Three persons were injured when their car dashed against a tree and overturned, 435 km from here on Moga-Ludhiana road, on Friday. The driver was reportedly under the influence of liquor.

NAWANSHAHR
New party floated:
The General Category Welfare Federation of Punjab has decided to float a new political party by the name of Reservation Virodhi Dal with a view to mobilise a public opinion and strengthen its political base. This was stated here on Friday by Dr Brijmohan Barthwal, the state press secretary of the federation.

PATIALA
Promotions resented:
The PSEB Class IV Workers' Welfare Union on Friday resented the move of the management to promote junior Class IV employees while ignoring the rights of senior employees. This was stated by Mr Tarsem Singh, President of the union.

PHAGWARA
Car lifter:
A car belonging to Mr Navninder Singh of Bhullarai village was reportedly lifted by Raju Bhaiya, a migrant servant. A case has been registered against the suspect on Thursday.

Langar organised: Members of Lions Club Rose, Midtown, Lotus and Leo Club Rose organised a langar for the poor at Colony No 5 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Saturday. Tributes were paid to the father of the nation on this occasion. The Region Chairman, Mr B.S. Jaswal of the Lions Club International, also attended the langar.

Action demanded: A number of office-bearers of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (CTCC) have demanded disciplinary action against Mr Sunil Parti and Mr Bhupinder Singh, the two CTCC office-bearers for stating that Mr Davinder Singh Babla was not a Congress leader. Mr Parti and Mr Bhupinder Singh had stated that Mr Babla was not even a primary member of the party.

Society formed: A society for parents of mentally handicapped children has been formed in the city, according to a press note issued here. The society will function as "Vishvas" school at Prayaas building in Sector 38. The press note said that parents who naturally understood the needs of their wards better, could collaborate and manage the functioning of the school. Trained teachers would be employed for better care of children.

Annual conference: The annual conference of the Buddha's Light International Association (BLIA) will be held at Ambedkar Bhavan here in Sector 37-A on Sunday, Mr Lahori Ram Balley, President of the association, announced here.

Animal Day: The local chapter of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will observe the 'World Animal Day' on Monday. In a press note, Mr Jasbir Ralhan, President of the SPCA, said on this occasion, a mass anti-rabies vaccination and deworming of dogs will be carried out in a free camp to be held by the organisation at 10 am near the Sector 41 community centre. A similar camp will be organised at 12 noon near the Sector 40 Baba Lal Mandir.

Allotment decried: The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare Federation has decried the allotment of small plots to residents of Sector 25 by the UT Administration. In a press note issued here on Saturday, Mr Amarnath Sarhadi, President of the federation, said bigger plots should be allotted to the Sector 25 residents as had been allotted to residents of Maloya, Mauli Jagran and Palsora Colony.

Medical camp: Punjab National Bank, The Care Health Society and Nicholas Piramal India on Saturday organised a free medical check-up camp at the Zonal Office of Punjab National Bank in Sector 17 here. More than 540 persons of different age groups attended the camp.

Camp concludes: A 10-day NSS camp held at Government College, Sector 11, concluded on Saturday. Mr Kewal Krishan Adiwal, Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of the UT presided over the valedictory function.

Competition results: In the on-going special 10-day camp at GMSSS, Sector 37, a competition on the theme of contribution of NSS in social upliftment and development of overall personality of the youth was held on Saturday. The following NSS volunteers were adjudged the winners: Inderpreet Kaur (1); Mamta (2); Madhu(3).

NSS camp: A 10-day NSS camp at Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, concluded on Saturday. Dr C.L. Narang, coordinator of the PU NSS, presided over the valedictory function.

Meditation camp: The Vishvas Organisation under the guidance of Swami Vishvas Ji will organise a four-day meditation camp at Math Park in Sector 20 from Thursday. The camp will have practical meditation, discourses on meditation and spirituality and a question-answer session.

Building inaugurated:
A new building of Shivalik Kashatriya Gramin Bank (a government undertaking) was inaugurated in Dumna village near Morinda by Mr S.C. Bithal, Chairman of the bank, on Saturday. Mr Bithal said locker facility would be available in this branch and farmers would be provided Kisan Cards here for claiming production credit for raising crops.

Mela opened: Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Food and Civil Supplies Minister of Punjab, opened a three-day 'Bal Mela' on Friday at Swami Shivananda Public High School in Morinda, near here. The prize distribution would be held on Sunday at 2.30 pm.

Employees angry:
There is resentment among the employees of state board and corporations regarding the recent instructions of the Punjab Government of disallowing house rent, conveyance and daily allowances and medical reimbursement higher than that admissible to the Punjab Government employees. The instructions were issued recently by the government for observance of economy and austerity measures in all public sector undertakings, including boards and corporations.

AMBALA
Camp inaugurated:
The local Red Cross Society and DAV Public School jointly organised a blood donation camp here on Friday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mrs Navraj Sandhu, inaugurated the camp. As many as 42 NSS students of DAV and SD College, Ambala cantonment donated blood.

Installation ceremony: The installation ceremony of the Interact Club (Central) was held here on Friday. The Deputy Commissioner Mrs Navraj Sandhu, was the Chief Guest. The local Rotary Club, presented a cheque for Rs 11,000 to the Deputy Commissioner for the old age home.

CBI inquiry demanded: A former Organising Secretary of the HPCC, Mr Om Parkash Malik, has demanded a CBI inquiry into Sanjay Lamba case who had been missing since July 17. He alleged that the local police had so far failed to trace him.

KAITHAL
Robbery bid foiled:
A teacher, Mr Ram Nath, foiled an attempt by three persons who had tried to rob him of cash near Pundri, 16 km from here on Friday. The teacher was carrying the cash which he had withdrawn from the bank for the disbursement of salaries among the school staff.

Abducted: Ram Kumar a resident of Chakku Ladana village of this district, was allegedly abducted by five persons on Friday. He had reportedly taken some money from the accused and had later failed to return it. A case has been registered.

Bar Association members: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Bar Association: President — Mr Ravi Kumar Gupta; Secretary - Mr Arvind Kumar Gupta and Treasurer - Mr Rajinder Singh Jasrotia.

SIRSA
Commits suicide:
A shopkeeper Sunil (29) and his wife Usha (26) who had allegedly doused themselves with kerosene and had later set themselves afire at their house at Mandi Kalanwali succumbed to their injuries on Thursday and Friday respectively.

SONEPAT
Lottery sellers arrested:
The Rai police on Friday arrested five persons while they were selling lottery tickets on the G.T Road near Kundli village, 25 km from here. The SSP, seized lottery tickets worth Rs 1.5 lakh from their possession. A case has been registered against the accused persons.

Gheraoed: The Superintending Engineer of the Public Health Department, Mr Upkar Singh was reportedly gheraoed by employees of various departments on the premises of the PWD(B&R) Rest House here on Friday. They lifted the gherao after getting assurance that the SE would listen to their grievances on Monday.

Resentment: Resentment prevails among the teachers and students of Government Senior Secondary School at Saidpur village as the authorities concerned have failed to get the school building, repaired. Representations made by the Principal to the authorities concerned have fallen on deaf ears.

YAMUNANAGAR
Workshop concludes:
A two days workshop on management in the field of reproductive and child health that was held in the Yoga hall, concluded here on Thursday. Members of the European Commission's Technical Assistance Team, Project Co-ordinator of the Reproductive Child Health (RCH), Haryana, Deputy Commissioner, doctors and NGOs took part in the deliberations.

Dr Sudhir Mahendru, the Project Chairman of the Rotary Club said free boarding lodging, medicines and spectacles would be provided to the people at the camp.
