Arrested for killing wife

CHANDIGARH, Oct 18 — The police has arrested a resident of Indira colony on the charge of murdering his wife under the influence of liquor.

According to police sources, Suresh Kumar, who was working as a peon in the Punjab mini-Secretariat, Sector 9, was reportedly a habitual drinker and used to abuse his wife and four children almost every day. The police had been called many times by the family and neighbours to restrain him in this context

Today he reached home at about 2 p.m. drunk and started abusing his wife, Sohan (45), and children. When she objected he beat her up and later picked her up and threw her down many times. As a result she received serious injuries in her head and died on the spot.

On the basis of a complaint filed by her son, Santresh (15), the police has registered a case under Section 302, IPC, at Mani majra police station and arrested the accused.

Suicide: Kumhar colony resident Karamvir, who was working as a peon in a branch of the State Bank of India here, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree here today.

He had allegedly been plagued by domestic problems for some time and his body was found hanging by a dupatta from a tree near the Sector 25 crematorium by some colony residents. The police is investigating.

2 women held: The police has arrested two women from Sector 22 on the charges of prostitution.

According to sources, Ranjit Kaur, a resident of Ferozepore, was arrested from a guest house in Sector 22. He had gone there along with two men. While she was arrested her companions escaped.

On the other hand, Sita Devi, also a resident of Ferozepore, was arrested from the sector along with Izat Beg.

Separate cases have been registered at the Central police station.

Youth ends life: A 30-year-old man, Jarnail Singh, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from an eucalyptus tree in Bhankarpur village last night. The body was seen hanging by a passerby in the morning.

A crowd gathered at the spot and the family of the deceased and the police were informed. The body, which was hanging with a nylon rope, was then brought down.

According to his family members, Jarnail Singh left the house around midnight without telling anyone. He was married about 10 years ago and is survived by his wife and two sons.Back

Peas, ginger touch all-time high

PANCHKULA, Oct 18 — The prices of peas and ginger touched an all-time high this week in the local vegetable markets. This was also in keeping with the price trend in Chandigarh where vegetables were dearer as compared to last week.

Peas, after coming down to Rs 35 a kg last week, went up by Rs 15 and were were available for Rs 50 in Sectors 6, 7 and 8. Ginger, priced at Rs 50 a kg last week, went up to Rs 60 this week. Vendors in Sector 2 were selling the same for Rs 65 a kg. However, it was available for almost half this rate in Chandigarh owing to fresh arrivals.

The price of garlic showed a marked increase, going up from Rs 40 to Rs 60 a kg while capsicum prices went up to Rs 28 against Rs 25 last week. In spite of the marginal rise, the vegetable was cheaper in the city as compared to Chandigarh where it is being sold for Rs 40 a kg.

A kg of cabbage and cauliflower were available for Rs 15 each, up by Rs 3 to Rs 5 this week in the different markets, and a kg of radish was being sold for Rs 10 in Sector 7 and 8. Brinjal prices were on a par with Chandigarh, priced at Rs 12 a kg in both cities.

Squashgourd was available at Rs 20 a kg while tomatoes continued to be priced at Rs 12 a kg in Sector 8 and 9. The price of a kg of lady's finger was dearer in comparison to Chandigarh and the vegetable was available for Rs 20 against Rs 14 in Chandigarh.

The prices of cucumber, lemon and spinach were Rs 12 and 32 a kg and Rs 5 a bunch, respectively. Pumpkin was available for Rs 10 and gourd for Rs 12 a kg. Back



 


Wins for YPS, Dev Samaj girls

CHANDIGARH, Oct 18 — The Chandigarh Senior Women Football Championship for the Deepak Kapania Memorial Trophy began here today. The tournament was inaugurated by Mr Pawan Bansal, Member of Parliament and Chief Patron of the Chandigarh Football Association, organiser of this five-day meet. Mr Rakesh Bakshi, Secretary of the CFA, said women's soccer had returned to the city after nearly two decades.

On the first day of the meet, YPS (Blue), SAS Nagar, had to struggle before beating Guru Teg Bahadur School, Sector 15, in a tie-breaker, 5-2. The score was 2-2 at the end of the stipulated period.

In the second match, Dev Samaj College, Sector 45 (B), defeated Govt Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-B, by a solitary goal.

In the match between YPS and GTB schools, saw the teams getting full support of the cheering students in the stands. The first goal came through a powerful shot by Mohinder Kaur of YPS in the 22nd minute of the match, followed by an equaliser from GTB's Gurpreet Kaur in the 25th minute.

In the second half, Prabhjot Kaur of YPS scored a goal in the 35th minute taking the lead to 2-1. After 10 minutes, the GTB girls came back into the match when Rajinder by way of a penalty kick scored the equaliser. In the tie-breaker, YPS (Blue) won 5-2.

In the second match, Dev Samaj College girls dominated the game from the beginning. In the 20th minute, Vijay scored a goal and till the end, GGSSS-20 were unable to achieve any breakthrough and the Dev Samaj team won, 1-0.

Tomorrow, the first match will be played between YPS (yellow) and Sanjay Public School, Sector 44. The second match will be played between Govt Girls High School, Sector 11, and Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22.

Cricket trials: The Haryana State Women's Cricket Association will conduct selection trials for the under-16 team which will take part in the National Sub-Junior Cricket Championship to be held next month at Lucknow. The trials will be held on October 23 at cricket grounds in Sector 5 of Panchkula, according to Ms B. Chatterjee, Secretary of the association.

Teams selected: The Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association has selected 18-member boys' and girls' teams to attend a coaching camp at Shivalik Public School in Sector 41 from October 31 to prepare for the forthcoming Senior and North Zone Ball Badminton Championships.

Little Flower, St Anne's win

CHANDIGARH, Oct 18 — Little Flower School, Panchkula, and St Anne's Convent School, Sector 32, Chandigarh, today won against Manav Mangal School, Sector 21 and Government Model School, Sector 44, respectively, in under-14 section of the second Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament being played here at St John's High School in Sector 26.

The other winners of today's matches in the under-14 section were New Public School, Sector 18 and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

Earlier, in the under-16 section, St Xavier's School, Sector 44, beat KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, and St Peter's High School, Sector 37, won against Air Force School.

In the under-12 section, St John's School got a walkover against Mount Carmel School, Sector 46. St Xavier's School, Sector 44, defeated St Peter's High School, Sector 37, by 34 runs, St Kabir School, Sector 26, beat Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, by seven wickets and St Anne' Convent School, Sector 32, beat John's (10) team by 16 runs.

Karambir skipper: Karambir Singh of the Chandigarh police will be the captain of the Chandigarh shooting team comprising 39 shooters, including 26 men and 13 women, to take part in the IXth GV Mavlankar National Shooting Championship to be held at Ahmedabad in Gujarat from October 21 to 30. This is according to a statement given by Mr Vijay Pal Singh, Secretary of the Chandigarh Rifle Association.

Mr Manjeet Singh and Ms Ranjit Mehta will accompany the team as coach and manager, respectively.
