Recovered: The district police chief, Mr Gurcharan Singh Pherurai, has said a strict vigil is being kept on strangers throughout the district to avoid any untoward incident. Talking to mediapersons here today he gave details about various recoveries made by the police. They included: illicit liquor -1,686 litre 900 ml, lahan-34 kg, opium-44 kg, poppy husk- 3,325kg, smack-15 gm, pistols-31, three guns, cartridges-98 and distilleries -109.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ferozepore district unit of the Bahujan Employees Federation: president — Mr Balvir Singh; senior vice-presidents — Mr Manoharlal and Mr Jaswant Singh; general secretary — Mohan Singh; secretary — Mr Kirpal Singh Kamboj; and finance secretary — Mr Harmel Singh.

JALANDHAR
Vulgar parcel: Mr P.D Joshi, a local resident of Urban Estate Phase-I, has complained to the Deputy Commissioner that he received a VP parcel (VPP) containing obscene published material. He had not ordered the parcel, which was in the name of his five-year-old son, he added. He demanded from the administration to look into the matter and sought quick action against the mischievous elements.

PATHANKOT
Inaugurated: Mr Yogendra Prasad. Chairman and Managing Director of National Hydro Electric Corporation inaugurated a guest house of the Chamera Hydro electric project on Sunday here, which is located on the mission road near here.

Girl recovered: The police has arrested Rajpal, a plus two student of Government Senior Secondary School, Ladwa, in this district under Sections 363, 366 and 376, IPC for allegedly abducting and raping a minor girl of Gobindgarh village near Ladwa on October 10. According to the district police chief, Mr Attar Singh Ahlawat, the minor girl has been recovered from the possession of Rajpal and has been restored to her parents after conducting a medical examination.

SONEPAT
Annual conference: The district unit of the Chemists and Druggists Association organised a district-level annual conference at Ganaur, 16 km from here, on Saturday. The conference welcomed the decision of the state government to abolish the octroi duty in the state. It also urged the state government to take immediate steps for reduction in the prices of medicines. Mr Balraj Singh, general secretary of the state unit of the association, was among those who addressed.

Rally: The district unit of the HVP organised a workers rally here on Saturday in protest against the hike in diesel price by Central Government. The rally was addressed, among others, by Mr Jagbir Singh Malik, former minister and Mr Rajiv Jain, general secretary of the HVP. It was announced that similar rallies would be held on October 24 at Gohana and October 31 at Baroda in this district.

Tanker recovered: The police has arrested Partap and Narinder of Machhri village and recovered a stolen tanker worth Rs 6 lakh from them. The SP, Mr K.P. Singh, told mediapersons here on Monday that the arrests were made following a complaint by Mr Ashok Kumar of here alleging the theft of a tanker on October 13.
