Lalit Mansingh is Foreign
Secretary
NEW DELHI, Oct 26 (TNS) Indian High Commissioner
to Britain Lalit Mansingh will be the new Foreign
Secretary. Announcing his appointment, an offic`ial note
said that Mr Mansingh, who succeeds Mr K.Raghunath, would
take up his new assignment from December 1. His posting
had been cleared by the Appointments Committee of the
Cabinet.Car
in Musharrafs convoy catches fire
DUBAI, Oct 26 (Reuters) A car in the convoy of
Pakistans military ruler Pervez Musharraf today
caught fire in Saudi Arabia today but the army general
was unhurt, officials said. "One car in the convoy
in which our defence attache based in Riyadh was
travelling caught fire, apparently from an electric
problem, but everybody is fine," an official at the
Pakistani consulate told Reuters by telephone from
Jeddah. Another official said Gen Musharrafs car
was 500 metres away from the car that caught fire.
10 LTTE men
killed
COLOMBO, Oct 26 (UNI) Ten LTTE rebels, including
seven women, were killed in clashes with the security
forces while one soldier was killed and eight others
injured as the rebels activated a clay more mine on an
army in north of Sri Lanka during the past 24 hours. A
defence ministry release said seven women terrorists were
killed when troops in ambush engaged them with machine
guns in east of Ampakamam in Wanni.

NEW DELHI, Oct 26 (PTI) A special CBI court today
issued a fresh bailable warrant against a chartered
accountant, Sushil Kumar who was allegedly instrumental
in opening accounts of three former JMM MPs in a bank
here after the no-confidence motion against the
P.V.Narasimha Rao government failed in July 1993. Special
Judge Ajit Bharihoke issued the bailable warrant against
Sushil Kumar asking him to appear as a witness in the
court tomorrow or day after for recording his evidence.
UK ban on women
LUXEMBOURG, Oct 26 (Reuters) The European
Unions highest court today ruled that Britain can
continue to ban women from the royal marines, one of the
countrys elite military regiments. The
Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice said Angela
Sirdar, a soldier for 16 years, did not have the right to
transfer into the marines as a cook because each member
of that service must be ready at a moments notice
for combat duty.
Father to sell
son
TEL AVIV, Oct 26 (DPA) A desperate Palestinian
father of five wants to sell his son to finance an
operation for his critically ill daughter, it was
reported today. The Israeli Maariv daily said the
father, Suleiman Amala, from a village near the West Bank
town of Nablus, had already sold his land and his
wifes jewellery to pay for medical treatment for
his 13-year-old daughter, who suffers from dysfunctional
kidneys.
Taxis off roads
MUMBAI, Oct 26 (PTI) People were put to
inconvenience as over 55,000 taxis in the metropolis went
off the roads today to protest the decision of the
Transport Commissioner (TC) to ban 137-D Padmini diesel
version vehicles as taxis due to excess smoke emission.
The one-day strike spearheaded by the Mumbai
Taximens Union (MTU) was also called to protest
against the TV circular to taxi owners to produce their
over 15-year-old cabs before the RTO for a pollution
test.
Man burnt to
death
ELURU, Oct 26 (UNI) A 70-year-old man was charred
to death when crackers he was manufacturing at his paan
shop exploded at Akiveedu village in West Godavari
district of Andhra Pradesh last night. The police here
today said Mr Buggavarapu Subarao was manufacturing
crackers for Deepavali.
Bill introduced
NEW DELHI, Oct 26 (UNI) The government today
introduced a Bill in the Lok Sabha to replace the
Contingency Fund of India (amendment) ordinance
promulgated on July 28 temporarily raising the corpus of
the fund to Rs 550 crore till March 31, 2000.
