Free eye camp:
The Nishkam Seva Ashram will hold a free eye-operation camp at its Vridh Ashram at Daad village, on September 18.

MOGA
Currency notes:
People of this district on Thursday expressed resentment over the non-availability of currency notes of the denominations of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10 here. They said the currency notes available in these denominations were soiled and not accepted by shopkeepers. They have urged the Reserve Bank of India to take measures in this regard.

Adulterated liquor: Liquor consumers on Tuesday alleged that liquor sold here was adulterated and substandard and the seals of most of the bottles broken. They demanded action against the owners of such liquor shops.

NAWANSHAHR
Telephone subscribers:
The telephones of a number of subscribers of the local Bhucheran mohalla have not been functioning for the past 10 days. Mr Surinder Mohan Tejpal, councillor of the area, has alleged that the authorities concerned had done nothing so far despite repeated complaints.

PATIALA
Tree guards:
The local Lions Club on Thursday installed 50 tree guards in the Army Institute of Law at a function presided over by 43 Armed Brigade Commander, Brig J. M. Singh.

Awareness camp: An awareness camp was organised by the Health and Transport Departments at the local bus stand on Wednesday, in which more than 100 conductors, drivers and minibus operators participated. They were briefed on the dangers of AIDS, increasing population and the importance of hygiene.top

Agreement reached: The two groups fighting for the possession of the Divya Yoga Mandir reached an agreement here on Thursday. According to sources, the two groups went to the office of Ms Geetanjali Kundra, SDM, and signed the necessary papers for ending the dispute which had made the situation tense for devotees visiting the temple.

Appointed: The Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) at a meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Gurvinder Singh Grewal appointed Monica Verma, an M.Sc (physics) student, vice-president of the organisation. She was also made in charge of its girls' wing. Anil Sagar was appointed adviser to the organisation.

Short play contest: The Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Chandigarh will introduce the Champa Mangatrai memorial inter-school short play competition, starting this year on September 11. Mrs Mangatrai was one the founder members of the YWCA.

Annual function:
The Mata Mansa Devi Puja Sthal Board organised an evening of 'bhajan' to celebrate its eighth annual function at the temple here on Thursday. The programme was inaugurated by Mr Dheer Pal Singh, Minister for Local Bodies. He presented shawls to the singers, Sharma 'bandhu'. Mr K.C. Sharma, Revenue Minister, was the guest of honour.

Tailor murdered:
Virender, a tailor of Jandli village, was found murdered at the house of Puran of the same village who used to visit his shop. According to the police, the victim, had gone to Puran's house to collect money for the clothes he had stitched for him. The accused has been arrested.

Opium seized: The Ambala Central Jail authorities have seized 15 gm of opium from Charanjit Singh an undertrial. A case has been registered.

HISAR
Low rainfall:
The Vice-Chancellor of CCS Haryana Agriculture University, Mr Vinay Kumar, has expressed concern over the low rainfall in the region, saying it may, hamper the sowing of rabi crops. Addressing scientists and officers of the Agriculture Department here on Thursday, he asked them to educate farmers on ways to conserve the leftover moisture in the soil to ensure good germination of crops.

Succumbed:
Vimlesh Kumari (22) of the local tehsil camp, who was hit by a Maruti car on the G. T. Road on Sunday, succumbed to her injuries at the PGI, Rohtak, on Wednesday.

ROHTAK
Goods recovered:
The police claims to have recovered stolen goods worth over Rs 9 lakh by solving eight cases of theft and robbery during the past month. The SSP, Mr P.K. Aggarwal, said 16 cases were registered under the Excise Act and 22 bottles and 5060 pouches of liquor seized. Four cases were registered under the Arms Act and two countrymade pistols, two cartridges and two knives seized.

Yuva sabha:

Non-payment of salaries: Employees of the municipal committee, of Mandi Ellenabad have expressed displeasure over the non-payment of salaries to them for the past two months. They have threaten to launch an agitation if their salaries were not released immediately.

Water shortage: Residents of Pratap Nagar in Mandi Ellenabad have been facing a shortage of drinking water for the past several days. They have said despite repeated complaints to the authorities concerned, no action has been taken so far. Some of them have reportedly been purchasing drinking water.top

Cattle fair:
Kalu Ram and Gopalaram of Jamthal village were declared best bullock-keepers while the Jersey cows of Harinder of Jinanu village and Mast Ram of Gasaud village were adjudged first and second, respectively, in the four-day Dawinghati cattle fair which concluded near here under the chairmanship of the SDM, Mr Roshan Lal, on Wednesday.

Fish seized: The police on Wednesday seized 42 kg of fish, being carried in a jeep, at Suharghat. The fish had reportedly been brought from the Gobind Sagar lake and were being transported outside the state without a permit. The driver, Ramesh Kumar, has been arrested.

Pirated cassettes: The police has arrested Dharam Dass, K.C. Sharma, Chetan and Dalsher Singh, belonging to Kaithal in Haryana, for selling pirated cassettes under the brand name of Super Cassettes Udyog Limited. The SP, Mr Anurag Garg, said here on Thursday that the accused were arrested following a complaint of Mr Devinder Kumar, manager of the company.
