One killed in road accident

CHANDIGARH, Sept 22 — A person was killed and another injured in an accident near the railway traffic light crossing here today. Traffic on the Chandigarh-Panchkula highway was disrupted for quite some time following the accident.

According to police sources, a truck (CHW 6272) collided with a tractor-trailer carrying wheat with such force that the tractor-trailer overturned and two persons sitting on it were seriously injured. One of them later succumbed to his injuries at the PGI. The condition of the other was stated to be serious.

The truck driver abandoned the truck and ran away.

Caught: Surjit Singh, a resident of Loh Shimli village of Patiala, was caught red-handed by the police when he was stealing a suitcase belonging to Dehra Dun resident Parkash.

A case has been registered under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, at the Sector 17 police station.

Motor cycle stolen: Mr Youjinder Singh, a resident of Sector 37, reported to the police that his motor cycle (CHOI-T-0207) was stolen from the Sector 37 market. A case under Section 379, IPC, has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

One arrested: The police has arrested Faqir Chand, a resident of Mansa Devi complex, who was wanted in connection with a case registered under Sections 380, 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC at the Central police station.

Eight held: As many as seven persons have been arrested under preventive action.

One person was arrested for roaming about under suspicious circumstances. Back

Orange enters at Rs 60

CHANDIGARH, Sept 22 — The price of apple has come down while mausambi has become dearer in the local market during the past four days.

A survey showed that if a kg of 'Kashmiri' apple was priced at Rs 40 just four days ago, it could be purchased today for Rs 30. The wholesale price of the same has decreased from Rs 350 to Rs 250 per 17 kg. The price of the royal variety of apple has come down from Rs 50 to Rs 40 per kg, while the price of the golden variety has come down from Rs 30 to Rs 25 a kg.

Similarly, Kashmiri nakh has become cheaper during this period. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 50 last week, was today available for Rs 40. The wholesale price of the fruit has dipped from Rs 500 to Rs 400 per 13 kg pack. Traders attributed the fall to more arrivals of the fruit from parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

There was, however, no change in the price of baggugosha as it could be still purchased for Rs 50 a kg in retail and for Rs 750 per 18 kg pack. Similarly, guava was available at the old price of Rs 20 a kg in retail and for Rs 14 a kg in wholesale market.

Meanwhile, orange has registered its entry in the market, but with a high price tag. A dozen of the fruit was available in the market today for Rs 60 in the retail market, while in the wholesale market, the fruit was available at Rs 120 per 3 dozen pieces.

A piece of pineapple could be purchased today for Rs 30-35, while it could be had for Rs 40 just four days back.

More arrivals have resulted in crashing of banana price. A dozen of the fruit, priced at Rs 20 two days back, could be purchased today for Rs 15. The wholesale price has come down from Rs 140-150 to Rs 100-130 per 100 pieces.

One could relish papaya after spending Rs 20 for a kg in retail and Rs 14 in the wholesale market, while mausambi could be had for Rs 50-60 per dozen. The fruit was available for Rs 30-35 a dozen last week.Back



 


Superb show by Sarv Mittar

CHANDIGARH, Sept 22 — A superb allround performance by Sarv Mittar who scored 20 runs and took three wickets for three runs, enabled Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, beat Government High School, Sector 40, by seven wickets in the UT Inter-School Cricket Tournament for the Shivalik Trophy being played at Cricket Stadium in Sector 16 today.

GHS-40 won the toss and opted to bat first. They were bundled out for 75 runs in 19 overs. Sandeep was the highest scorer with 20 runs. Sandeep Mahajan took four wickets and gave away 11 runs.

In reply, GMSSS-37 achieved the target in 9.4 overs with Amit Tiwari and Sarv Mittar scoring 23 and 20 runs, respectively.

Brief scores: GHS-40 — 75 all out (Sandeep 20, Sobat 14, Sandeep Mahajan 4 for 11, Sarv Mittar 3 for 3); GMSSS-37 — 77 runs in 9.4 overs (Amit Tiwari 23, Sarv Mittar 20, Sonu 2 for 20).

Tomorrow, GMSSS-20-D will play against GMSSS-33.

Meet postponed: The VIth J.P. Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament which was to begin on September 23 has been postponed. It will now begin on September 24. However, the match which was to be held on September 24 has not been shifted.

Bishnoi Cricket Club, past year's winners, have been awarded a bye and a direct berth in the semi-finals along with Punjab Cricket Club.

The following is the revised schedule: September 24 — Indian airlines v/s PCA Colts; September 25 — Godrej CC v/s Puncom XI; September 26 (first semi-final) — Punjab CC v/s the winner of IA v/s PCAC; September 27 (second semi-final) — Bishnoi CC v/s winner of GCC v/s Puncom XI; September 28 — final.

Badminton team: Geeta Aggarwal of the Food Corporation of India will lead the Chandigarh badminton team in the North Zone Inter-State Badminton Championship to begin on September 23 at Jammu. This three-day team championship will see the participation of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh.

The players were selected by a selection committee headed by Mr B.D. Gandhi of the Chandigarh Badminton Association. Apart from the regular kit money, extra pocket allowance have also been sanctioned for the players by the association.

The teams are as follows: Men's (Rahimtollah Cup) — Amit Sachdeva, Vivek Sharma, Ashish Sharma, Ashirvad, Rajni Kant, Varun, Gursev Singh; women's (Chadha Cup) — Geeta Aggarwal (captain), Parnita, Jyotsna, Isha and Mala Gaba.

Boys (under-19) (Narang Cup) — Vivek Sharma, Deepak Sidhu, Varun, Naresh, Arun Tomar; girls (under-19) (Shafi Quereshi Cup) — Mala Gaba, Isha Sharma, Parnita, Nidhi and Rachna Sethi.

Surinder Mahajan will be the coach-cum-manager of the team.

President elected: Mr B.R. Banga, IAS, was unanimously elected the President of the Adventure Sports Association of India at its meeting held here today. The association which is affiliated to the Adventure Sports Association of India has decided to conduct a trekking expedition from Kalka to Kasauli in the first week of October. School and college students can take part in this expedition.

Another decision taken was holding of a campfire for senior citizens of the city on October 2 at Kansal forests, coinciding with the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.

Other office-bearers are as follows: Senior Vice-Presidents — Mr G.K. Sabharwal and Mr D.S. Saroya; Vice-Presidents — Mr G.S. Wasson and Mr Mohinder Singh; General Secretary — Mr P.S. Brar; Finance Secretary — Mr Balbir Singh, Joint Secretary — Mr Naib Singh; Principal Adviser — Mr G.S. Bhangoo; Adviser — Mr J.P.S. Sidhu.

Hockey captain: Sushma will lead the Chandigarh women's hockey team which will take part in the Junior National Women's Hockey Championship to be held at Mumbai from September 23 to 30, according to Mr J.P.S. Sidhu, Secretary of the Chandigarh Women's Hockey Association. Nishi Chauhan who recently helped the junior Indian team win the Four-nation Hockey Tournament held at New Jersey in the USA is also a prominent member of the team.

The team is as follows: Sushma (captain), Sangeeta, Anuradha, Pooja, Prem, Anu, Beant Kaur, Mandeep, Dimple, Nishi Chauhan, Simranjeet Kaur, Jyoti Bali, Sushila, Laxmi, Sunita Rawat and Asha.

Anup Sharma will be the manager and Gurvinder Kaur will be the coach of the team.

DAV-8 win: DAV Public School, Sector 8, bagged the table tennis title in the girls section while DAV Model School, Sector 15, clinched the basketball boys' title and DAV English Medium Senior Secondary School the girls' basketball title in the Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Zonal Tournament for the Chandigarh and Panchkula Zone being played here.

DAV Public School, Thermal Colony, Panipat, won the cricket title after beating Hansraj Public School by three runs. They also secured the table tennis boys' crown.

The handball title for boys went to DAV Public School, HUDA, Panipat, while the girls' title to DAV Model School, Sector 15.

Under-19 team: Narinder Walia will be the captain of the Panchkula district cricket team (under-19) for the Haryana State Inter-District (under-19) Cricket Tournament. The team will play its first match against Chandigarh on September 24 at Gursagar grounds in Chandigarh, according to Mr Sandeep Moudgil, Secretary of the PDCA.

The team is as follows: Gaurav Sood, Yadvinder, Umesh Kaira, Vishal Sahni, Yash Chandra, Bhalender, Aman Verma, Deepak Lohatia, Sarpreet, Ranjit Rana, Sudhikshan Mehta, Amit Puri, Rajiv Dhankar and Manish.

Baseball trials

CHANDIGARH, Sept 22 — The Baseball Association of Chandigarh will hold selection trials boys and girls under the age of 17 on September 25 at Government College for Men, Sector 11. Selected boys and girls would take part in the XIth Junior National Baseball Championship to be held at Bhiwani (Haryana) from Septemebr 29, said Mr Tilak Raj Kalia, Secretary of the association.Back
