India to launch satellites
MUMBAI, Sept 28 (UNI) — India will skyrocket into the next millennium by placing a series of remote sensing, communication and broadcasting satellites in orbit throwing open major areas of research, Space Commission Chairman D.K. Kasturirangan said today after receiving the first-ever Murli M. Chigani Memorial Award for excellence in applied physics instituted by the Indian Physics Association. In 2001-02, ISRO is planning to launch two Indian remote sensing (IRS) satellites — IRS-P5 and IRS-P6. This will be followed by Oceansat II. Later on the cards is a climate and weather research satellite, Megha-Tropiques" he said. Meanwhile, the launch-pad for the much-talked GSLV is being made ready.

WASHINGTON, Sept 28 (AFP) — The World Bank Board has unanimously reappointed James Wolfensohn as President of the bank for a second five-year term. Mr Wolfensohn, who had said he would make poverty reduction his priority if he was re-appointed, was first named head of the international financial institution in June 1995. The new term start on June 1, 2000.

16 Tamil rebels killed
COLOMBO, Sept 28 (PTI) — Sixteen Tamil guerrillas and four Sri Lankan soldiers have been killed in fresh clashes in country’s north and east, the army said here today. It said four soldiers were killed when the LTTE members ambushed a route clearing party of the army at Karambgolla in eastern Trincomalee today.

Geelani critical
NEW DELHI, Sept 28 (PTI) — The condition of Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who was hospitalised for heart ailment in Srinagar yesterday, has "deteriorated" and he was flown here today, Hurriyat sources said. Geelani, who is currently under detention, had to be flown by a special plane to New Delhi after he suffered a heart attack.

4 jawans killed
IMPHAL, Sept 28 (PTI) — Four jawans were killed and three others seriously injured when armed militants ambushed an Assam Rifles party at Thanlon in Churachandpur district of Manipur today. The jawans after being attacked opened fire and the resultant encounter continued for about 40 minutes in the morning hours, a preliminary official report said here.

35 hurt in mishap
SHIMLA, Sept 28 (UNI) — At least 35 persons were injured when the bus in which they were travelling met with an accident at Gusal in Mandi district today. The injured were hospitalised. The bus was going from Janjheli to Mandi.

25 farmers kidnapped
HYDERABAD, Sept 28 (PTI) — A group of tribesmen in East Godavari district, demanding the release of two tribesmen arrested earlier, today kidnapped 25 farmers of Andhra Pradesh's Tappasuwargudem village, the police said.
