Ex-servicemen bash up corporation chief

CHANDIGARH, Sept 29 — Major-General U.S. Sidhu (retd), the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Punjab Ex-Servicemen Corporation, was manhandled and bashed up by some employees, all ex-servicemen, of the corporation when he was coming out of his office in Sector 40 here today.

About 40 employees, who had been working with an SAS Nagar-based workshop run by the corporation, had assembled in front of the corporation's office to protest against the move of the Punjab Government to close down the workshop. As soon as Mr Sidhu came out of his office at around 4.30 pm, the employees thrashed him and his driver, saying Mr Sidhu was responsible for the closure of the workshop.

According to Mr Sidhu, he was rescued by shopkeepers of the area and passersby. He alleged that his car had also been damaged by the employees. A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Manhandled: Mr Kashmira Singh, an Inspector with the UT enforcement staff, and some of his colleagues were manhandled when they tried to remove illegal 'rehris' and 'pharis' from near the Rock Garden. A case under Sections 147, 149, 332, 353 and 186 of the IPC has been registered against Hamsudin, Dharambir, Sheikh Mashqoor, Rajinder, Tirkha Singh, Nafai and Mansoor Ali.

Woman cheated: Ms Krishna Sharma of Sector 43 reported that she was cheated to the tune of Rs 5,25,000 by R.K. Garg, R.M. Sharma, Rajinder Goel and K.R. Deep for getting her a society plot.

Scooter stolen: Mr Rajinder Sandhu of Modern Housing Complex in Mani Majra reported that his scooter (PB-10-B-1837) was stolen from Sector 45-A. A case has been registered.

Five arrested: Four persons were arrested for roaming under suspicious circumstances. One person was arrested for creating nuisance under the influence of liquor.

Injured: A case of rash and negligent driving under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered against the driver of a Maruti (HR-01-J-299), Sanjeev Kumar, who hit a scooter (HR-03-B-3454). The scooterist, Naik K.D. Chaudhary, was injured. The driver fled from the scene with the car.

One nabbed: The police arrested Shahbad Khan of Bijnaur, who was involved in the incident on October 5 last year in a house in Sector 12-A.Back

Song contest draws students

CHANDIGARH, Sept 29 — Solo song competition covering colleges of the city and adjoining areas marked the Punjab Engineering College annual activities here today.

The competition included popular songs, English and 'ghazal' categories.

The first competitor in the show was Priya Gupta from the local Dev Samaj College. The second competitor Simmi from the local Khalsa college drew applause for a distinct voice for her popular Reshma song Lambi judai.

Ramandeep from Dera Bassi with Ai ajnabi, Tina Saini from MCM DAV, Rajni with Doori na rahe koi, Anuradha Pathania and Jatinder were prominent among the applauded song singers.

The second came the ghazal round which also figured famous compositions from Hindi films. Rupinder started the event with Dil cheez kya hai. Reema, Nisha, Deepak and Kuljeet were prominent among the other participants.

The final competition for the event was the Western songs round. Michael Angelo from Arts College, Shivani, Megh, Sumit Bhatia and Reema figured among other participants.

Talking about the college festival PECFEST, the coordinator said that the college had made certain changes in the programmes.This happened because of a couple of unpleasant incidents on the campus last year which included eve-teasing.

The college has gone in for a major change by introducing a festival on computer ware. The show will be organised at the national level. The authorities said that the interest of students in cultural festivals could be handled by competitions organised by the university.

Light comical compositions between two different rounds were applauded by the audience as was the welcome dance at the outset of the function. Mr Rajnish Prakash, Principal of the college and Mr M.L.Koser from the Pracheen Kala Kendra, were the chief guests on the occasion.

The winners in the Hindi solo section were Rajni and Jatinder Singh (GGDSD College). Rahul Prabhakar won the contest in the western section while the second position was shared by Michael Angelo and Gunjan Chawla. Richa and Himanshu were the winners in the ghazals category of the contest.Back

Co told to refund, pay interest

CHANDIGARH, Sept 29 — The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Indus Valley Estates and Farms Limited to refund Rs 1,20,497 to Dr Sansar Chandra.

In its three-page order, the forum also directed the respondents to pay interest at the rate of 12 per cent per annum with effect from November 20,1998, till the date the payment is made. “Let this order be complied within one month of the receipt of copy of it, which be sent to the parties free of charge”, the forum ruled.

In his application, Dr Sansar Chandra had stated that he had deposited Rs 1 lakh in three instalments with the Agro Bond Scheme floated by the respondents. The deposit was made in November, 1997, and the scheme was to expire after one year.

He claimed that he was promised interest at the rate of 24 per cent per annum. The unit certificates guaranteeing the return of the matured amount were issued to him. He was also given postdated cheques. However, these cheques bounced. The respondents paid interest only for three to four months and then stopped the payment of interest.

He claimed that he had approached the respondents for the refund of the amount and the interest. However, all his efforts failed. Therefore, he had filed the compaint with the prayer that the respondents be directed to pay him Rs 1,20,497 by way of principal amount and interest and Rs 25,000 on account of harassment and costs.Back



 


DAV-8 bag trophy

CHANDIGARH, Sept 29 — DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, bagged the overall trophy in the All-India Mahatma Hansraj Inter-Zonal Tournament in 14 sport disciplines, here today. DAV-8 won badminton, basketball, cricket, football, handball, table tennis, volleyball and lawn tennis titles.

Results of the second day's events (all finals): Cricket — DAV School-8 beat Sain Dass School, Jalandhar, by 145 runs; badminton — DAV-8 b DAV School Amritsar, 2-0 (Manish b Sandeep, 17-14, 15-11; Manish and Akash b Sandeep and Hitesh, 15-10, 15-9).

Basketball — DAV b AS Senior Secondary School, Ambala City, 57-30 (scorers — Amrish 15, Harjot 13, Amit 10 and Gaurav 13); football — DAV-8 b AS School, Rurki Kalan, 2-1 (scorers Ravinder Dutt 2 for winners; Baljinder 1 for losers).

Boxers' boycott: A number of senior boxers of Chandigarh have boycotted the Chandigarh State Senior Boxing Championship which began here today at the Sector 46 sports complex, according to a press note issued by eleven boxers of the city. They have criticised the fielding of boxers from outside Chandigarh allegedly by Secretary of the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association, besides two coaches.

It was also alleged in the note that when better facilities existed in the Sector 23 coaching centre, why the championship was being held at the present venue. They want that seperate trials should be held to select the UT team for national championships so that they were not forced to represent other states than Chandigarh.Back

Varun wins junior TT title

CHANDIGARH, Sept 29 — Varun Kassal of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Sector 41, won the under-17 junior boys' singles title after beating Ramit Singla in a five-game thriller in the 12th Chandigarh Table Tennis Championship which entered its penultimate day here at the Sector 23 table tennis hall today.

A Class V student of DAV Public School, Sector 8 and the giant killer in this tournament, Nadia Saini, won the sub-junior girls (under-14) title after beating Ramanpreet Kaur of AKSIPS-41 in two straight games. Nadia also made to the final of the junior girls' event by beating Ruchi Gautam in four games. Now, she will take on Amarpreet Kaur who defeated Ruchika in the other semi-final.

Mandeep Singh, a Class VIII student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sector 47, bagged the sub-junior boys' singles title after facing some resistance from Aditya Puri of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21.

Other results are as follows: Sub-junior boys (semi-finals) — Mandeep Singh b Amit Kumar, 21-9, 26-24; Aditya Puri b Sajal Kaushal, 21-15, 21-16. Third place — Sajal Kaushal b Amit Kumar, 21-14, 21-15.

The participating teams have been divided into two pools. Pool 'A' comprises Godrej CC, LIC XI, BBMB XI and Punjab Civil Secretariat and the 'B' pool will have PGI XI, Mohali Gymkhana, CNS XI and JAL XI.

All league matches to be played till the quarterfinals stage will be of 25 overs a side. Semi-finals will be of 30 overs a side and the final will be of 35 overs a side.

On the opening day, Godrej CC will take on Punjab Civil Secretariat in the morning, followed by PGI XI who will face CNS XI on the same day.

School cricket : SD Public School, Sector 32, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20-D, by 121 runs, thanks fine batting by Harinder Singh who made 67 runs off 56 balls and superb bowling by Rajiv Bhatia who took five wickets for 25 runs in the UT Inter-School Cricket Tournament being played here at Cricket Stadium in Sector 16, today.

Brief scores: SD-32 — 219 for 6 in 25 overs (Harinder Singh 67, Ankur Bali 34, Saurabh 27, Varun 24, Sukhjot 2 for 26) GMSSS-20 — 98 all out in 18.1 overs (Anil Sharma 50, Rajiv Bhatia 5 for 25, Nimit 2 for 6).

Ball badminton: SD Club, Sector 32, and Shivalik Club-41 reached the final of the girls' section while Flankers Club and Chandigarh Ball Badminton Academy stormed into the boys' section final of the Chandigarh Ball Badminton Championship being played here at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41.

Sport fest from October 1

SAS NAGAR, Sept 28 — A three-day sport festival will be organised by S.S. Gill Memorial Welfare Club at Dasherra Grounds in Phase 8 here from October 1. Mr Phool Raj Singh, President of the S.S. Gill Memorial Welfare Club, said the events would be held in kabaddi (Punjab and national styles), athletics and and tug-of-war.

The sport meet will be inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner of Ropar, Mr Kulbir Singh Sidhu. The State Education Minister, Mr Tota Singh, will give away the prizes on the concluding day. Teams winning the first positions will be given a cash prizes of Rs 11,000 each.Back
