GURDASPUR
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among residents of 12 villages surrounding the sugar mill at Paniar. The management has failed to keep a check health hazards caused due to industrial wastes. The adversely affected villages are Gharotian, Raowal, Nandpur, Dhollowal, Bhagwanpur, Lohgarh, Kothe, Paniar, Gandhian, Jakarian, and Nano Nangal.

HOSHIARPUR
Situation reviewed:
The DGP of Punjab, Mr Sarabjit Singh, said here on Tuesday that he had instructed the DIGs of the state to review the cases registered by political parties during the Lok Sabha elections in their respective constituencies.
Condemned: The local Punjab Civil Medical Services Association at its emergency meeting on Tuesday condemned the incident of September 26 in which members of the ruling party demonstrated against a doctor on duty at the emergency ward of the Civil Hospital due to which the health services got disrupted.

JALANDHAR
Seminar:
The Jalandhar Chapter of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India held a seminar on recurrent pregnancy loss (repeated spontaneous-abortions) here on Tuesday.
Electrocuted:
Bishni, a Nepali woman, who had been living with her husband, Ravi Raj Bahadur, in a factory which had been closed for several years at Surya Mohalla, suffered extensive burns in electrocution on the factory premises on Tuesday.

KURALI
School function:
National Public School organised an annual prize distribution here on Sunday. Exhibition-cum-fete and cultural programme were the highlights of the function. The Ropar Deputy Commissioner, Mr KS Sidhu, was the chief guest. The school Principal, Mr SL Verma, read out the annual report.

MOGA
Water shortage:
Residents of the town on Tuesday complained that they were facing an acute shortage of drinking water in several localities for the past several months. The water pressure was so low that it did not reach the second floor of the buildings, they added.
Rally:
A rally was held by employees of the Punjab State Tubewell Corporation here on Tuesday in protest against the non-acceptance of their demands. Various leaders of the Democratic Front Diploma Engineers Association addressed the rally.

PATIALA
Eye camp:
The Leo Club, Patran, organised a free eye check-up camp in which 800 patients were examined and 79 cataract operations performed. Medicines free of cost were distributed among the patients.
Dharna:
Employees of the municipal corporation here continued their agitation for the ninth day on Tuesday in protest against the suspension orders issued to certain staff members. Mr Balwant Singh Sandhu, President, Municipal Corporation Employees Union, said they would launch a statewide agitation if the government failed to accept their demands.
Awards presented:
Nearly 80 students, who had excelled in academics and extra-curricular activities, were honoured at the annual function of Senior Secondary Model School held at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall of Punjabi University here on Tuesday. The university Vice-Chancellor, Mr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, presented awards to students.

Passport adalat:
Twentyseven passports were issued by the passport lok adalat held here on Tuesday. The Regional Passport Officer, Mr Rakesh Kumar, Jalandhar, presided over the adalat.

TARN TARAN
Accused arrested:
The Goindwal police has arrested four persons who allegedly killed a person at a farm house in Jhander Mahanpurkhan village on intervening night of September 22 and 23. The accused also injured the son of the farm house owner and looted some cash and household articles. The fifth accused has reportedly absconded.

Science exhibition: A two-day regional science exhibition concluded at Jawahar Navodaya Vidylaya, here on Wednesday. Prizes were awarded to winners of various competitions, including exhibition, declamation and paper reading. Dr Brahamjit Kalia, District Education Officer, while speaking on the concluding ceremony, stressed the need for multi-dimensional activities for the development of students. A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion.
Office-bearers: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the DAV College unit of the Students Council: President — Amanpreet Singh; Vice-President — Surinder Singh; General Secretary — Nishu Dubey; and Joint Secretary — Bobby James. The ABVP-DSA combine claims to have swept the elections.
Dental check-up:
A free dental check-up camp organised by the Inner Wheel Club and the NSS volunteers of Guru Gobind Singh College at Raipur Kalan village. At the camp, about 100 villagers and 200 students of Government Primary School, Raipur Kalan, were examined. Dr R.P. Gupta delivered a talk on dental health care on the occasion.
Memo given: The All-India Federation of University Teachers Associations submitted a memorandum of their demands to Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister of Punjab, during a meeting at Lajpat Rai Bhavan here on Wednesday. "The government had committed in an agreement last year that it would reimburse 80 per cent of the expenditure of pay revision, the issue which needed immediate attention," a press note said.

Rally held: The employees associated with the UT Powermen Association held a protest rally outside the office of the Executive Engineer, Electricity Operation Division no 2 here on Wednesday. The employees were protesting against a move to seek panel of lower division clerks, upper division clerks and other categories from the Punjab State Electricity Board, allegedly ignoring the promotions of the UT employees.

Quiz contest:

PANIPAT
Accused arrested:
The police has arrested two accused who reportedly attacked Mr Kulwant Sharma, a press reporter, on September 23. They have been identified as Kalu and Kala of the local Krishan Pura area.
Dispute: Seven persons were injured in a dispute over the ownership of some land at Daryapur village under Matloda police station in the district on Sunday. A case has been registered.
Complaint rejected : The District Consumers Forum has rejected the complaint of an eye patient, Nand Lal, against an eye-surgeon, Dr G.C. Gupta, who was allegedly blamed for not performing Nand Lal's eye operation properly. The judgement was delivered by the president of the forum Mr V.P. Kadian.

SIRSA
Arrested:
The local police on Tuesday arrested Sagar Mal Mahajan of Ellenabad under Sections 406 and 506 of the IPC on a complaint lodged by Mr Hanuman Singal of Jaggiwala village. The accused was allegedly harassing his daughter-in-law for bringing insufficient dowry.

SONEPAT
Indefinite strike:
Students of Hindu Girls College went on an indefinite strike here on Monday in protest against the non-acceptance of their demands by the management. The college would remain close for autumn break from October 1 to 19.

Corruption:
The Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department Graduate Engineers Association has urged the government to take effective steps to check corruption in the Public Works Department. The association suggested that a system should be evolved to monitor the assets of all officers of the department, including the Junior Engineers, and keep a check on malpractices in postings, transfers and promotions at the secretariat-level.
