THIS refers to the article "Anatomy of corruption" by S.L. Sharma (March 26). The author has given an exhaustive account of corruption. However, I do not quite agree with him that the faulty paradigm of development which promotes greed is at the root of corruption in this part of the world. Have not the advanced countries which have experienced far less corruption in the recent times, adopted the same development paradigm? To my mind, corruption is concomitant with underdevelopment, it is an attendant feature of economic backwardness. The advanced democracies of the world were as greatly afflicted by corruption as India is today when their development was incipient. AKHILESH In all fairness This refers to Taru Bahls article "In all fairness" (March 26). If there is one thing that children need most, it is fairness and equality. Children hate favouritism both at school and at home. Unfortunately some parents give one child more attention than the other. Every child deserves a fair deal and the attention and constant love of its parents. Parents should instill discipline in their children in a fair, kind and sensible way. A wise man has aptly said "If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world". ANUP KUMAR |
Sikh art This refers to Portraits of Peity and Splendour by Dr B N Goswamy (March 19). I wonder why the writer is so focussed on Sikh art upto the 19th century. The total neglect of the contribution of the sikhs tok art in the 20th century by the writer is a surprise. The exhibition instead of doing justice has done injustice to the persons who have enriched the 20th century through their creative efforts. Nirvair
Singh Chatha Great minds This is with reference to the letter of Baij Nath Sharma and the comments of Kuldip Dhiman in the Feedback column (March 19, 2000). Saunders was shot as he just came out of the police office situated across the road almost opposite the residence of the Principal of the D. A. V. College. It was soon after the shooting in the evening that I happened to pass that way after doing my science practicals in the D. A. V. School a short distance away ( I was then about 13 years old). A large crowd had collected in the police ready to go out in search of the assailants. V. P.
Malhotra Be fair and just This refers to Taru Bahls article Be fair and just March (19). The writer has rightly mentioned some situations in which a person finds himself in a fix. The statement of Plato is quite relevant here: "Honesty is for the most part less profitable than dishonesty." It appears to me that these days the things like honesty, truth, morality etc are losing their meaning. SATISH
