I am a student of Class XII. Could you please tell me about the job prospects after doing a BTech course in Dairy Technology.

Kiran, Patiala

Increased production of milk and milk products in India has opened up lucrative career avenues for dairy technologists. These specialists can seek employment both in the public and private sectors. Milk co-operatives (including the State Dairy Co-operative Societies) and federations provide ample scope. The job involves collection, production and processing of milk, quality control and even the manufacture and marketing of dairy products like cheese, butter, ice-cream, chocolates, milk foods, cream etc.

Amul, Mother Dairy, etc. are leading milk co-operatives in the country. There are several dairies and dairy development boards in the public sector where the pay and perks are as per government grades. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the state level dairy development co-operatives offer excellent pay packages for dairy technologists. In the private sector, Hindustan Lever, Vadilal, Nestle, Glaxo, Smith Kline Beecham, etc. are some of the leading companies that employ dairy technologists.

To begin with, dairy technologists are recruited as trainees and shift officers in dairy plants. They move on to become assistant managers and senior managers and even consultants to private enterprises.

While dairy farming can be a challenging career offering exciting prospects for the trained professional, those joining this field must be prepared to live in remote areas and roll up their sleeves and work hard.

After completing Class XII, I am interested in doing a Bachelor’s course in Library & Information Science (BLISc). Could you please tell me about the job opportunities available in this field.

Daljeet, Chandigarh

After your graduation in Library & Information Science, you have a wide choice of options to choose from. As a librarian, you will find openings in government and public libraries, universities and other academic institutions, cultural institutions, information centres, museums and galleries, photo and film libraries, besides companies and organisations with large information-handling requirements. With computerisation playing a key role in information management, there is scope for diversifying into hi-tech areas like systems analysis, research assistance, database operations and management, printing and publishing, documentation, corporate and even freelance consultancy, or information marketing.

Trustworthy teachers
According to a new survey that was sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Columbia School of Business, the only people more trustworthy than teachers are United States Supreme Court judges. The National Credibility Index is the nation’s only index that measures which sources of information the public views to be credible on various topics. The research is expected eventually to provide a database about believability and credibility for public relations professionals, journalists, political leaders, educators and the public at large.

Obesity epidemic
There is an unprecedented epidemic of obesity among young people in the USA, according to researchers at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Preventions Division of Adolescent and School Health. The condition is consistent in every demographic group in the country, reports USA Today. Besides heart disease, increases in obesity can heighten risks of colon cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and other diseases among young people. There is no magic bullet to reverse the trend, but experts are looking to school education as a good place to begin. The decline in activity may also be affecting US military forces. Young people entering the military are not as fit as they were 10-15 years ago. The number of kids defined as overweight has risen from 4.4 per cent in 1963 -1970 to 10.7 per cent in 1988-1994. The CDC uses the body mass index, which assesses the relationship between weight and height.

Internet of social benefit
Although Internet use has been associated with social isolation, new research reports that the opposite may be true. According to a study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, a research centre in Washington, more than half of Internet users found that e-mail was strengthening their family ties, reports The New York Times. Internet users in the study reported far more offline social contact than non-users. Women in particular said they found e-mail very useful in keeping in touch with friends and family. Up to 18 per cent of non-users reported that they were socially isolated, compared with only 8 per cent of Internet users.

Computers in schools
Nigerian President Olusegun Oba-sanjo has pledged to ensure that computers are provided in schools nationwide so that Nigerian students can attain the level of usage and penetration achieved by their US counterparts, reports Africa News Online. The Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Ebitimi Banigo, spoke of the President’s desire at the CTO (Computers, Telecommunications and Office Equipment Exhibition) 2000 seminar organised by the Commercial Service of the US Embassy in Lagos ahead of this year’s CTO exhibition. Banigo said the President has directed his Ministry to begin the local assembly of computers to realise the goal of building the nation’s human resource base in the competitive world of convergence of information and communication technologies.
