Ms Saroop Kishen’s observations

Setting right a point with regard to an earlier report published in The Tribune on blood shortage in the city in which she was quoted, Mrs Saroop Kishen, Honorary Secretary of the Blood Bank Society, said here today that she had made two separate points.

One, there was a shortage of blood of around 20,000 units annually.

Two, the blood banks should remain open round the clock so that the patients got blood in their hour of need and the donors could donate blood anytime.

Rs 60 lakh for rehabilitation of disabled

Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, has been designated as the “State Resource Centre-cum-District Rehabilitation Centre” for the rehabilitation of the disabled under the National Programme for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability (NPRPD).

Under the NPRPD scheme, measures will be taken to integrate the disabled persons. The UT Administration will make the appropriate modifications at the public places in order to create a barrier-free environment for the disabled. Rs 60 lakh has been earmarked for the project including the provision of a mobile van.

The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mr G.K. Marwaha, Secretary, Social Welfare, who has been recently designated as the State Commissioner for Disabilities. At the meeting, Mr Marwaha stressed that for proper implementation of the scheme, thrust on awareness of the PWD Act, 1995, has to be laid upon.

Prof Raj Bahadur, HOD, Orthopaedics and the nodal officer of the scheme, informed that for the implementation of the scheme, the nomination of rehabilitation workers (VRWs) , minimum two from each village has already been done.

Weightlifting championship from June 10

Air Force Weightlifting Championship will be held at 3 BRD, Air Force, here from June 10 to 14. On the first day clinic for officials will be organised and draw of lots taken out.

Assembly of team and weighing-in for 56-kg category will be done in the June 11 afternoon. The championship will be declared open after the welcome address by the organising secretary.

Competitions will then be conducted in 62-kg, 69-kg and 76-kg categories on the subsequent days.

Meeting

The annual general body meeting of the UT Cricket Association will be held in the PWD Inspection Bungalow, Sector 19, on June 10 at 11.00 a.m.

The following agenda will be discussed at the meeting according to Mr S.S. Bawa, General Secretary of the association: passing of the last AGM report; passing of last year's accounts; general secretary’s report; briefing by Col A.S. Judge, President of the association, regarding the latest position of the association’s affiliation case with the BCCI and election for the next term and passing/finalising of cricketing calendar for 2001.

St Joseph’s trophy

Harpreet Singh will lead St. Joseph’s against MCA, Mohali, tomorrow in the first St. Joseph’s Cricket Trophy (U-16) organised by the Chandigarh Cricket Association. The match will be played at DAV Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh.

The team: Harpreet Singh (captain), Puneet Bansal, Amit Gulati, Pushpinder Singh, Abhishek Kaushal, Sahil Arora, Nikhil Arora (wicketkeeper), Akashdeep Singh, Shashi Sharma, Rishi Sharma, Kishore Kumar, Kunal Dhawan, Akash Bhalla, Bharat Lamba, Sunny, Vivek Devgun.

5,000 attend recruitment rally

Chandigarh, June 8
Around 5,000 persons from all over the region today converged on the Police Lines in Sector 26 for recruitment to the 100 vacant posts of Home Guards volunteer in the Chandigarh police.

Many of the aspirants were graduates, a number of them were qualified in computers. This was in spite of the fact that the minimum education requirement was matric.

It is learnt that as many as 20 posts of female and 80 posts of the male Home Guards volunteers were lying vacant in the Chandigarh police.

The aspirants had to undergo physical tests for height, chest measurements, etc. They were also required to participate in high jump and long jump. As many as 300 females participated in the recruitment drive and the rest of the 5,000 people were males. The age group for females was 18 to 45 years and for males was 18 to 50 years. It is learnt that the honorarium to be paid to a Home Guards volunteer is Rs 70 a day, in addition to the washing allowance.

Rs 9.05 lakh for replacement of pipes

Panchkula, June 8
The district administration has proposed to spend Rs 9.05 lakh on the replacement of old plastic pipes to prevent water leakage on the internal roads in the Industrial Area. The project will be completed by June 30, said Ms Jyoti Arora, Deputy Commissioner, at a meeting of the members of the Single Window Service, here on Thursday. Apart from this, all possible help would be provided by the district administration for the development of industries in the district, she added.
