CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE
Pervin Malhotra, Tribune’s career expert answers all your career queries.

Q Is the MAHE MIT course recognised by the UGC/AICTE? Will the change in nomenclature affect the prospects of the course? What career opportunities are available on completion of this course? Can we take the GATE exam after this course? What is the minimum percentage required for getting into IIT after a MSc? Can we also enroll for the DOEACC-C level course? Which institutes are offering the course? What is scope for this course?

Sandeep Anand

A MAHE is a deemed university under the UGC Act.

The change in nomenclature of the course will not affect the prospects of the course. MSc (IT) deals with system programming and chip programming. As compared to MCA it offers more advanced course content i.e. various computer languages- C, OOPS, Java, DBMS, OS, Networking, Artificial Intelligence. Although students of M.Sc. (IT) and MCA are both called software engineers, M.SC. (IT) has equally good if not better job prospects. Companies like. IBM & Cadence software require MSc (IT) students for special jobs. Till the slowdown companies like Intel, Wipro and Hughes Software Systems were recruiting these students.

Yes, you are perfectly eligible for GATE examination. To get into IIT no minimum percentage in MSc is specified Selection is based on percentile score in the GATE exam. To clear the paper you need to be through in Engineering concepts and mathematics at the bachelor’s level.

With this qualification you are also completely eligible for jobs at institutes such as ISRO provided you are in the specified age bracket.

Since the eligibility for DOEACC C-level is: B-level, MCA, MSc, AMIETE/AMIE you can directly enroll for the course.

In the North the provisionally accredited institutes for C-level are limited. Their accreditation is updated regularly so you must visit the website www.doeacc.org.in for complete information.

Though the course is fully recognised for recruitment in Govt. jobs but the private sector tends to give first preference to BTech/MCA degree holders.

Q I have just bought a small orchard in Kasauli. Is there any course that could teach me something about fruit production, preferably through correspondence?

Krishan Kumar Madan

A The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Dnyangangotri, near Gangapur Dam, Nashik 422005, offers Diploma courses through correspondence in Fruit Production, Vegetable Production, & Floriculture and Landscape Gardening. An eligibility criterion requires you to be over 16 years of age and SSC/Class X pass. Subsequently, you can also opt for a 1-year Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture Sciences (BHSc) on completion of all 3 Diploma courses.

Q I am in Class XI and love to experiment with food. How do I become a professional chef?

Gagan Dhingra

A There are several different ways of getting to be a chef. After Class XII, you can take a craft-level course in cooking/baking at a Food Craft institute. Admission is normally in June/July. These 6-18 month courses assure you a place in the junior levels of the kitchen hierarchy, i.e., as a Commis 3 in a five-star hotel. If you are trained in traditional/family cooking you can also start directly.

Even if you don’ t have a culinary background you can join a hotel directly as a Kitchen Apprentice. Starting at the lowest level you can work your way up to the supervisory level within 6-7 years. Ofcourse the professional and more popular route would be to opt for a 3-year hotel management diploma or degree course from a recognized institute after Class XII.

You could opt for a specialization in the kitchen department during your internship that forms part of your course. Subsequently, you can enrol for an executive training programme in F&B conducted by any of the good hotel chains.

You can choose to work for a 5-star restaurant or you could opt for smaller restaurant chain. After some years you would have the necessary experience to start your own restaurant or catering service. If you remain in the hotel industry you can rise to be an executive chef in 10-15 years. Even if you enter at the lowest rung as apprentice you can, if you are hard working and talented, rise to the position of executive chef.

Q I have just started college and am doing History (H). Can I do a correspondence course from another university along with my regular graduation?

Anjali Thakur

A Since there is no UGC guideline to this effect, I think you can go ahead and do a correspondence course alongside your regular course if there is no specific objection from either university.

Some universities, on the other hand, clearly forbid you from pursuing two degree courses from the same university. But then you have such a wide choice of open and distance learning programmes to choose from.

The only practical problem you may face is having to balance clashing examination dates which could be a sticky proposition. Other than that, if both are fully recognised degrees, they would certainly be weighted factors to your advantage. So if you can comfortably manage both the degree courses simultaneously, then go ahead.

Q I have done BSc (Chemistry) and a BEd. Now I would like to follow this up with MEd through correspondence. Please list a few universities.

Mahesh Awasthi

A There are over 25 universities. offering MEd through Correspondence. I am listing a few of them for you:

Kota Open University, Rawatbhata Road, Akelgarh, Kota 324010.

Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Dnyangangotri, Near Gangapur Dam, Nashik 422005.

Himachal Pradesh University, International Centre for Distance Education and Open Learning, Summer Hill, Shimla 171005.

Kurukshetra University, Directorate of Correspondence Courses, Kurukshetra 136119.

Punjab University, Department of Correspondence Studies, Chandigarh 160014.

Punjabi University, Department of Correspondence Courses, Patiala 147002.

For further details write to Director, Department. of Distance Education of the respective universities.

Q I have enrolled for the ICAI’s Chartered Accountancy course. Could you please tell me how to enhance my job prospects abroad?

Ujjagar S Mann

A To enhance your job prospects in the US, you can enrol for the Certified Public Accountant course. CPA is the American equivalent of our CA.

Although some institutions in India offer to coach you for this test (charging exorbitant tuition fees of course), you could directly contact AICPA, 12011, Avenue of the Americas, New York NY 10036, and avail of the study material. Nevertheless, you will have to go to the US to take the test.

Yet another value addition may be the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certification, which can be pursued from India itself. You could directly enrol on the CISA website or at its regional chapters.

However, recently ICAI has decided to join hands with ICAEW, its counterpart in the UK, for mutual recognition of courses and degrees.

The Italian accounting body, CNDC has also come together with the ICAI through a similar agreement, which will strengthen its foothold in the EU.

Q Could you please tell me of some leading institutes in India where I could train to be a chef?

Shivinder Singh

A Although culinary skills are taught as a part of the regular diploma/degree courses in hotel management, you could also opt for specialized courses at the following institutes:

Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Nutrition, (H/O: NCHMT, Library Avenue Pusa, New. Delhi-110012. E-mail: [email protected]). Also in 21 other cities.

Oberoi Centre for Learning & Development, 7 Sham Nath Marg, New Delhi-110054.

How serious is the staff of various government schools in Haryana towards their job can be assessed from the report of the District Education Officer (DEO) who recently conducted surprise checks in some of the schools in rural areas. None except a single teacher each was found present in two of the schools visited by the authorities.

According to the DEO, Mr Bramahanand Chahal, only a physical training instructor was found present at Government High School at Dhauj village. None others, including the headmaster was present. A similar situation was noticed by the DEO at Government School, Paota. A Hindi teacher also was found to have marked attendance in the register.

Mr Chahal said he had written to the authorities concerned at Chandigarh to initiate proper action against the erring staff.

He had also recommended deduction of a day’s salary of teachers found absent.

He said the situation in schools at Pali and Bakhri villages was a little better but said that students were not being provided with proper infrastructure at schools. A majority of rooms at the school in Pali village were found to be unfit for use with roofs often leaking during the monsoons. There was no proper lighting facility. Fans and furniture were either not available or broken.

Why do we say that?

A load of codswallop!

When somebody tells a far-fetched or untrue story, they are often accused of speaking ‘a load of old codswallop’.

We have a certain American gentleman called Hiram Codd to thank for this colourful expression. In 1875 he patented a special bottle of mineral water which became very popular - except among hardened beer drinkers.

The word ‘wallop’ was already in use to describe alcoholic drinks and so, sneeringly, Hiram’s concoction - and other weak drinks - became known in bars as ‘Codd’s Wallop’. Gradually, anything inferior or false was nicknamed by the single word ‘codswallop’.
