New Delhi, October 1
The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) today banned the teaching of Class XI history book published by the NCERT in the schools being run by the committee as it denigrates the Sikh Gurus.

“We are banning the teaching of this book in our schools with immediate effect,” said Mr Avtar Singh Hit, president of the DSGMC.

There are more than 30 senior secondary schools run by the DSGMC in the Capital.

The book, written by noted historian Satish Chandra, was first published in 1990 and has been reprinted even in 2001.

Expressing surprise that the denigrating contents have not been brought to the notice of members of the community by the Sikh schools, Mr Hit announced the setting up of an inquiry committee to find out why the teachers/schools had not informed the denigrating contents to the DSGMC. The committee would submit its report within three days.

The DSGMC took objection to the chapter on climax and disintegration of the Mughal Empire.

“In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur was arrested with five of his followers, brought to Delhi and executed. The official explantion for this as given by some Persian sources is that after his return from Assam, the Guru, in association with Hafiz Adam, a follower of Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi, had resorted to plunder, laying waste the whole province of the Punjab,” the book said.

The author wrote that “according to Sikh tradition, the execution was due to the intrigues of some members of his family who disputed his succession and by others who had joined them. But we also were told that Aurangzeb was annoyed because the Guru had converted a few Muslims to Sikhism.”

Taking objection to the accounts presented by the author, Mr Avtar Singh Hit said the Human Resource Development Ministry must immediately ban the book.
