Dasehra was celebrated all over the city with usual fervour and gaiety here today. The day began with people worshipping Lord Rama in temples and at homes. This was the day when Ravana was done to death by Lord Rama.

The flow of importers from the USA, UK and other western countries, who used to throng the city hotels by this time of the year to order hosiery products, has almost come to the halt.

Spurious furnace oil racket busted, three held

The local police claimed to have busted a well-organised racket in marketing of spurious furnace oil in the city with the arrest of three persons and seizure of a large quantity of ingredients and equipment from a firm on the GT Road, near Sherpur.

Body found with multiple stab wounds

A body of a man aged about 35 with multiple stab wounds was found near the Partap chowk, here this morning. The dark-complexioned man was clean shaven and was wearing a white shirt, purple pants and shoes.

The nation will probably celebrate a noise and pollution-free Divali this year. The Supreme Court has issued directions to control noise pollution in the country during Dasehra and Divali. Unprecedented air and noise pollution is caused every year due to burning of crackers.

Speaker disburses grants

The Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, distributed cheques for Rs 10.26 lakh among nine gram panchayats of the Machhiwara block and pension letters among 300 beneficiaries at a function organised by the Machhiwara Kham gram panchayat on Wednesday.

The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) today organised a ‘route march’ in the city to mark its foundation day and the festival of Vijay Dashmi. RSS volunteers of all ages marched through main bazaars of the city in full dress, while a flower bedecked vehicle carrying portraits of senior leaders of the sangh and a group of volunteers carrying firearms led the march.

Remove obscene posters: YAD

The Youth Wing of the SAD while expressing serious concern over proliferation of obscene film posters all over the city, has threatened to launch direct action against the menace in case the district administration failed to deal with the offenders with a firm hand.

One killed in road accident
Ludhiana, October 26
The Sahnewal police is on the lookout for the driver of a Swaraj Mazda Canter truck (PB-11 N-172) that hit a pedestrian, Raj Kumar, a resident of Valmiki mohalla, Sahnewal, on the GT Road yesterday, killing him on the spot. The accused managed to flee the scene of occurrence.

Writing, painting contests held
Samrala, October 26
The Punjab Education Department with the collaboration of the National Foundation for Communal Harmony and National Integration, Delhi held a contest on the “Sampardayak Sadbhawna and Maharaja Ranjeet Singh”, in the local Government Senior Secondary School, Samrala, here yesterday. There were contests in writing, painting and Punjabi vars and kavishri gyan.

Forum tells PSEB to refund deposit
Ludhiana, October 26
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) to refund Rs 7,922 and 1,550, respectively, to Mr Rajinder Singh, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar. The forum has further directed the PSEB to pay interest at the rate of 12 per cent per annum on the said amounts from April 22, 1994 till their actual payment.

Dental conference inaugurated

A four-day All-India Dental Students Conference was inaugurated at the Guru Nanak College for Women, Model Town, Ludhiana by the Higher education Minister, Master Mohan Lal. Dr J.S. Gujral, Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, was the guest of honour. Dr U.S. Krishna Nayak, President, IDA (Head Office), and Dr V.M. Veerabahu, General Secretary, IDA, were also present on the occasion.
