Participants at a police-public meeting organised today at Meham, 35 km from here, charged the Inspector of the highway police patrol with harassing travellers and extorting money from them on one pretext or the other. The meeting was organised as part of the month-long “ Operation Sadhbhavana”, which was launched today by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Atar Singh Ahlawat.

Speaking on the occasion, he urged policemen to be public-friendly while discharging their duty.

“Operation Sadhbhavana” has been launched in the state to improve relations between the police and the public.

The district police chief looked embarrassed when it was alleged that policemen harassed the poor during “nakabandi” and while patrolling the national highway.

Mr Sahi Ram a former Principal, said policemen needed to improve their image.

Mr Wazir Singh, president, INLD Halqa committee, called for effective police patrolling in rural areas also, particularly during night hours.

Mr Ahlawat assured the participants that he would convey their grievances to the government. “I am confident that the problem will be solved soon” he said.

Many participants compained that the police was not very keen to solve theft cases. A large number of such cases were lying pending, they said.

Ms Santosh complained that her husband was harassing her for the past over two years and the police was not paying heed to her requests. Mr Ahlawat directed the SHO, Meham, to solve the complainant’s problem.

Mr Ahlawat announced that similar meetings would be held at Lakhan Majra on November 3 and Mokhra on November 5. He said a seminar would be held at Rohtak on November 12 on police-related topics. Municipal councillors, intellectuals, principals of various colleges and other prominent citizens would be invited to participate in the seminar, he said.

He said every SHO in the district had been asked to call a meeting of women sarpanches, panches and other women activists in their respective areas to educate them about their legal rights.

He said that the Centre had sanctioned three power stations of 500 MW each. These would be set up at Hisar, Faridabad and Yamunanagar. Also seventh and eighth units of 250 MW capacity to be set up at Panipat and 350 MW of power will be produced by the refinery being set up in the state.

He also inaugurated new complex of the Haryana Agriculture Industries Corporation and a community centre. He also unveiled the statue of Chaudhary Devi Lal at Nathusari Chopta village in the district.

ROHTAK: The CPM in a statement issued on the occasion of Haryana Day, regretted that the governments had been resorting to self-praise and making false claims of development and not accepting grave challenges facing common people.

Mr Inderjit Singh state secretary CPM said that ruling parties and their leaders in Haryana had neither long term planning nor political will to solve basic problems. They had been serving interests of a handful of privileged and socially dominant sections of society at the cost of majority of have-nots and poor, he said.

He said, agriculture sector was in deep crisis, industry was in doldrums and employment generation at a stand-still. Liberalisation and privatisation had dealt a severe blow and aggravated the situation, he said.

The party has called upon people of Haryana to create a pro-people political alternative to get rid of self-serving feudal type political leaders who had monopolised the political powers.
