‘Agaaz-2001’ welcomes freshers at PU
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 7
Myriad colours of dance and drama lit the colourful evening of the ‘Agaaz-2001’, organised to welcome the freshers for the new academic session at Panjab University here this evening.

Fears of paucity of space for audience in the usual venue at the Law auditorium proved right as the venue even in the open air was jam-packed. Usually the event was staged at the Law Auditorium. This once again highlights absence of a proper auditorium on the university campus.

The evening began with a one-minute silence in memory of hundreds who have laid down their lives in the unjust violence. This was followed by a traditional welcome dance which was wrongly announced as ‘Sarasvati Vandana’.

Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, Member of Parliament, was the chief guest on the occasion while Mr Surya Kant Sharma, Advocate General of Haryana, was the guest of honour. Prof Mohan Maharishi, Dean University Instructions, presided over the function.

A famous number from the film ‘Henna’ by Anupama received big crowd appreciation. This was followed by well rehearsed dance numbers which included ‘Piya se ulajh gaye nain’ and ‘Ji nahin jaan noo karda’. Dance by Harpreet on ‘Nimbuda’ and another one by Swati on music of ‘Mohabbatein’ film were also well received by the audience.

‘Naughty Chacha and Fraudi Bhatija’ by a college teacher Rachpal and Devinder deserve a special mention for having the crowd in splits with a typical rustic sense of humour. ‘Main chadar kad di’ by Gurpreet also needs a special mention.

A Rajasthani dance, ‘bhangra’, mimicry and qawwali were also performed on the occasion. The special show on the occasion was by a well known TV artist Prof Surinder Sharma in his typical comical colours.

The evening was organised by the Panjab University Students Council.

Flagged off by Mr Jagdish Kumar, Coordinator, Children’s Alliance for Protection of Environment, the rally went through the streets and the marketplaces where the students, holding placards and banners, raised slogans of “say no to crackers’’ as part of the drive to hold such rallies in various schools.

The rally displayed banners on noise pollution in silence zones which included areas around hospitals, educational institutions and religious places.

The rally made the general public aware of the interim directions issued by the Supreme Court to contain noise pollution and campaign against use of crackers between 10 pm to 6 am.

Stating that the use of crackers would lead to environment pollution, the students encouraged the public to celebrate Divali by lighting lamps and worshipping the goddess.

The president of the Environment Society of India, Mr SK Sharma, said that a survey carried out in the city, SAS Nagar and Panchkula revealed that the shopkeepers were hesitant in investing on crackers this season.

Earlier, the principal, Ms Suman Sharma, administered a pledge to the students against use of fire crackers.

Play: A gripping storyline and animated characters staging Arthur Miller’s ``The Crucible’’ made for an interesting evening at Rock Garden here today where students of Vivek High School staged the play for a receptive audience.

Having worked hard for the presentation, the students, too, seemed satisfied for giving it their best shot. The play, with its story of greed and ruthlessness of officials, was chosen for its relevance to society in the present times.

Sample papers: The Central Board of Secondary Education has brought out sample question papers for biology and economics for Class XII and for mathematics for Class X based on the updated syllabus.

Similarly, sample question papers and marking schemes in different subjects for Classes X and XII are also available and can be obtained on any working day from the CBSE store.

Factual themes, jarring images
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 6
The latest images by Satwant Singh disturb the mind immensely. In this disturbance perhaps lies the success of their creation. The drawings and paintings on display in the art gallery of Panjab University’s Fine Arts Museum reflect the savage that man is. The mediums of pen and ink and charcoal have been used to depict the darker side of human character — lust, jealousy and hatred.

The works are figurative and dominant images are those of animals. Called ‘savage symphony’, the works have been created in the past two months. There are 29 works in all, each of them furthering the theme, which is a little jarring for the eye. But as the world will have it, the surroundings are all about bitter facts and situations.

The works will be on display till November 10 and can be viewed between 10 am and 1 pm and again from 2 pm till 5 pm.
