Brisbane, November 10 Just 90 minutes of play was possible today, enough for wicketkeeper Gilchrist to reach his fourth Test century, scoring 118, Chris Cairns to take his 11th five-wicket haul for New Zealand and for Australia to declare their first innings closed at 486 for nine. In reply, New Zealand openers Mark Richardson, on 10, and Matthew Bell, six, negotiated nearly seven overs in the wet conditions to reach 29 before the rain became too heavy and play was halted for the day midway through the second session. Umpires finally abandoned play about 45 minutes before scheduled stumps. Four hours were lost yesterday and with rain forecast for tomorrow as well, a draw seems likely. It would end an Australian record run of 12 consecutive home Test victories for the world No. 1 team which has beaten Pakistan, India and the West Indies over the past two seasons. It is 23 Tests since they last drew a Test, in Colombo against Sri Lanka in September 1999. The Australians’ world-record run of 16 wins in all Tests ended this year when they lost twice against India and then once to England. Glenn Mcgrath had problems with his run-up, conceding an uncharacteristic eight runs from no balls, although Jason Gillespie was impressive from the other end, troubling Bell often. New Zealand were without injured pace bowler Shayne O’Connor in the field. Yesterday O’Connor aggravated a patella tendon injury which has kept him out of cricket for most of the year. But a scan today showed no serious damage, although he may not bowl again in the Brisbane Test. join Germany in final Rotterdam, November 10 Four of Australia’s goals came from corners, two being scored by Troy Elder who took his tournament tally to four. Craig Victory gave Australia the lead from his side’s second corner when he was left unmarked to tap home at the right post. In what was an evenly-matched first half, the only real chance in open play fell to Jung-Chul Kim who shot wide. Korea forced more corners in the half and, just when it seemed certain Australia would go into the break with a goal lead, Korea gained their fourth corner. With just 20 seconds remaining Woon-kon Yeo took a return pass and flicked home. But after the break Australia wasted no time regaining the upper hand. Two poor traps in the Korean circle cost them goals in the first four minutes of the second half. Adam Commens, the Australian left midfielder, scored after just 30 seconds of the half and Elder found the top corner of the Korean goal from a 39th-minute corner. In a last-ditch attempt to save the match Korea immediately changed their goalkeeper but Elder made it two goals from successive corners in the 51st minute, flicking lower and to the other side. Korea pulled back a goal four minutes later to make it 4-2 with a smart reverse stick shot by Keon-wook Kang but Australia’s lead remained safe and was made secure when Scott Webster scored at the right post from their seventh and last corner in the 67th minute. A late goal by Jung-seon Lee made no difference to the outcome. Tomorrow’s final should prove a close-run affair as both Australia and Germany attempt to win the trophy for the eighth time.

Career-best 81 by Travis Friend Dhaka, November 10 The 20-year-old Zimbabwean, with just 66 runs in his previous three Tests, slammed a career-best 81 to help his team reach 431 in reply to Bangladesh’s first-innings total of 107. He then returned to trouble Bangladesh as a new-ball bowler, taking two wickets to reduce the home team to 125-3 in the second innings on the third day. The hosts still require 199 more runs with seven wickets in hand to make Zimbabwe bat again. Friend did not allow Bangladesh to get off to a solid start as he had opener Al Sahariar (five) caught by Grant Flower in his second over. His second wicket came in the day’s last over when he dismissed Habibul Bashar. Bashar, who top-scored with a defiant 65, was involved in a 102-run stand for the second wicket with opener Javed Omar (35). Aminul Islam was batting on six and Mohammad Ashraful was yet to open his account when bad light stopped play. Friend, who claimed five wickets in the first innings on Thursday, was in the limelight in the morning session for his solid batting as his team, resuming at 348-7, scored 83 runs for the last three wickets before being all out just after lunch. Friend, without a half-century before this match, batted confidently against both fast bowlers and spinners to keep the pressure on Bangladesh. The lower-order batsman, 38 overnight, struck nine boundaries off 161 deliveries before being bowled by left-arm spinner Enamul Haque. He was involved in two useful partnerships which put his team in a commanding position. Friend put on 108 for the eighth wicket with former captain Heath Streak (65) and 50 for the next with current skipper Brian Murphy (25). Streak added just eight runs to his overnight score of 57 before being caught by wicket-keeper Khaled Masud off debutant seamer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. Wet outfield
prevents play East London (SA), November 10 Though there were no rains today, intermittent showers last evening had rendered the ground unfit to play. The Indians twice visited the ground in the hope that the wet outfield would improve sufficiently for the game to begin but despite bright sunshine no play was possible. This is the only practice game before the two back-to-back Test matches against South Africa. The Indians’ previous practice game at Kimberly ahead of the first Test was also abandoned due to wet field. India went into the Bloemfontein Test with some players who did not have any match-practice at all and lost the match by nine wickets.

Gambhir
shines in Delhi’s victory New Delhi, November 10 Chasing a victory target of 191 after bowling out Haryana for 201 in their second innings, Delhi cruised home in just 33.3 overs with more than a session remaining on the fourth and last day of the match. The highlight of Delhi innings was a brisk 101-run stand for the opening wicket between Gambhir and Akash Chopra who made 30. Both the openers went on the rampage early and looked to finish the match in a hurry. Their century stand came in just 18 overs as both of them unleashed a flurry of shots to all parts of the grounds. Gambhir dominated the day’s proceedings, as he tore apart the Haryana bowling. He was particularly harsh on fast bowler Nitin Aggarwal, smashing him for five consecutive boundaries in an over. Gambhir’s stroke-filled century came off just 88 balls and was studded with 22 fours. He picked up 28 runs off the last eight balls he faced. Haryana, searching for a breakthrough, were provided one by Amit Mishra when he sent back Chopra, caught by Shafiq at silly point. New man Radhey Shyam Gupta survived many anxious moments and confident appeals as Haryana bowlers tried to pin him down. But he soon cut loose pulling Gaurav Vashisht for a huge six and followed it up with a couple of boundaries. The second wicket pair added 61 runs before Gupta perished in the deep when he mistimed a full toss from Nitin Aggarwal and gave a simple catch to Sumit Narwal at deep fine leg. Gupta made 33 with the help of four fours and two sixes in 28 balls. Aggarwal struck again on the very next ball dismissing Delhi skipper Mithun Manhas, caught at first slip by Chetan Sharma, to raise hopes of a comeback by Haryana.
