Alert gateman averts tragedy at crossing
Ludhiana, November 13
An alert gateman at the Sarabha Nagar railway crossing today averted a major tragedy by signalling an incoming train to stop at the last moment when an overzealous driver of a dark blue Maruti Zen, bearing registration number PB-10-AC-7493, drew along the wrong side to bypass the barricade dropped by the gateman.

The stranded car on the railway track, which led to the blockade of railway traffic on the Ludhiana-Ferozepore line for about an hour. 10,000 bogus employees in PSEB: CICU
Ludhiana, November 13
The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings ( CICU) here has alleged that about 10,000 bogus employees were drawing salaries from the Punjab State Electricity Board ( PSEB) for the past many years, causing heavy financial losses to the state and the board as well.

Husband gets RI for dowry death
Ludhiana, November 13
Mr B.K. Mehta, Additional Sessions Judge, Ludhiana, has convicted Sajjan Singh (27) of Machhiwara, in a dowry death case and sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.
Manjit Kaur, wife of accused Sajjan Singh, had died just after two years of marriage under suspicious circumstances. She had been cremated without informing her parents.

Two accused of forging deed
Ahmedgarh, November 13
The local police has registered a case against two persons — Avtar Singh and Balram — under Sections 420, 448, 468, 474 and 34 of the IPC for dispossessing a man called Hafij Bashir from his shop, allegedly, on the basis of a forged deed.

‘Admn letting illegal cracker trade thrive’
Ludhiana, November 13
The District Youth Congress (DYC) has charged the district administration with being hand in glove with unscrupulous elements who store and sell crackers illegally here. It said the failure of the authorities to take action against those responsible for a major cracker fire that claimed four lives in Jawahar Nagar here had given a boost to this illegal business.

Mayor lays foundation stone of sewerage project
Ludhiana, November 13
It was a unique Divali gift for the residents of Shahid Karnail Singh Nagar, Phase II on the Pakhowal road here when the Mayor, Mr Apinder Singh Grewal, laid the foundation stone of the sewerage project for the locality and also presented a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to the welfare society for construction of a community centre in the area.

Bawa given Bairagi Rattan Award

Electroplating units seek reclaimed land
Ludhiana, November 13
The Ludhiana Electroplaters Association has urged the state government to provide them land in the Industrial Phase VIII, where the Punjab State Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) has succeeded to reclaim about 30 acres of land in the court. This land was encroached upon by some people about a decade ago.

Various schools in the city jointly celebrated the festival of Divali and Children’s Day here today. The tiny tots were happy and excited about these double celebrations and were dressed in bright coloured costumes.
