South Africa hold India

Kuala Lumpur, December 8
Playing an ultra-defensive game, India twice took the lead but surrendered it in the end to settle for a 2-2 draw against South Africa in their second match of the inaugural Champions Challenge Hockey Tournament here today.

India, who had scraped past Belgium with a 1-0 win yesterday, now have four points from two matches. South Africa, who had shocked title contenders Argentina in their first game, also have four points.

India had themselves to blame for missing out on a win as their defensive attitude was hard to understand. In the first half they started well and even the midfield, which was sluggish yesterday, was moving well.

With Deepak Thakur back in the team after missing out the match against Belgium, there was a sharpness in the frontline. But after leading 2-1 at the break, India preferred to play a defensive role and helped the South Africans to come back and draw the match.

Coach Cedric D’Souza said after the match that many players were down with fever and that was one reason why they couldn’t play Sabu Varkey and Kanwalpreet Singh. “Ignace Tirkey is out with malaria and we have decided that the entire team should go in for blood tests on Sunday (tomorrow) so that we are sure that other players are not carrying anything.”

Off an infringement against Dhanraj Pillay, India earned their first penalty corner in the ninth minute. Jugraj Singh had enough power in his flick which zipped in past the stunned South African goalkeeper for the lead.

But within a minute, the South Africans had found the equaliser when Justin King powered in another flick past the stranded Jude Menezes.

India earned their third penalty corner but the ball couldn’t be stopped properly. Sukhbir Singh Gill, however, managed to pull the ball back and gave it to Jugraj who moved into the circle and took a powerful shot that rebounded off the goalkeeper’s pads. Thakur, standing next to the goalkeeper, picked up the rebound and whacked it in to give India the lead once again.

India attacked in the very first minute after resumption and won their fourth penalty corner but Baljit Dhillon’s flick was wasted.

In the 42nd minute, Prabhjot Singh broke away from the top of the circle but his stinger was well saved by the South African goalkeeper.

Surprisingly, India fell back and regrouped in the midfield. Even Baljit Dhillon and Dhanraj Pillay were not going upfront. That gave the South Africans the chance to gain ball possession.

Malaysian umpire Paramjit Singh made things a bit difficult by showing yellow card to Arjun Halappa.

Halappa’s sending off reduced the Indians to 10 men and South Africa had an extra gap to exploit. They earned a stroke in the 52nd minute when Lazarus Barla took the ball on the foot but Jude Menezes saved it brilliantly by gloving the ball away.

South Africa earned two penalty corners in the 55th and 56th minutes but India managed to save them. The equaliser for South Africa finally came in the 60th minute when India made the cardinal mistake in not closing the gap on a cross as Mike Cullen’s cross was beautifully deflected in by Craig Fulton. Zimbabwe routed for record low score

Colombo, December 8
Sri Lanka won by nine wickets after Chaminda Vaas produced the best-ever bowling figures in a one-day international to dismiss Zimbabwe for a world record low of 38 in the first game of the triangular series today.

In an unchanged spell of fast bowling at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground, left-armer Vaas snapped up eight for 19 from eight overs — the first eight batsmen to fall — after Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field.

Vaas performed the first one-day international hat-trick by a Sri Lankan when he dismissed Zimbabwe captain Stuart Carlisle, Craig Wishart and Tatendra Taibu with the third, fourth and fifth balls of his sixth over.

It was seam bowling at its best, with Vaas committing the batsmen to errors by bringing them onto the front foot.

Four of his victims fell leg before as he reproduced the form which helped him to take 14 wickets against the West Indies in the third Test at the same venue earlier this week.

Vaas’s brilliant spell saw him break team-mate Muttiah Muralitharan’s one-day international world record of seven for 30 against India at Sharjah in 2000-01.

Off-spinner Muralitharan picked up the last two wickets in Zimbabwe’s innings in four balls.

Zimbabwe’s innings lasted just 87 minutes and their all-out total of 38 off 15.4 overs surpassed the previous lowest in one-day internationals of 43 set by Pakistan against the West Indies at Cape Town in 1992-93.

The West Indies are the third team in the one-day series in Colombo.

Fate of Wright, Leipus on hold
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 8
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President, Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya had a fairly lengthy meeting with Indian cricket coach John Wright of New Zealand and physio Andrew Leipus, kicking up speculation that the jobs of these foreign experts are on the line. But Mr Dalmiya refused to divulge what had exactly transpired among them, only indicating that the discussions were “inconclusive”, and that a final decision about their fate will be decided during the Bangalore Test on December 23.

The Board President, who was here to meet the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Shanawaz Hussian, stayed back to have a personal hearing with Wright and Leipus, who have completed one year of their association with the Indian cricket team.

Mr Dalmiya, immediately after ousting Dr A.C. Muthiah as the BCCI President, had indicated that the performance of the coach and physio will be reviewed before renewing their contract. He had asserted after the working committee meeting in Delhi recently that the performance of the team, the coach and physio included, should be “performance oriented”.

India’s emphatic victory against England in the opening Test at Mohali may have given some breather to the beleaguered Wright and Leipus, and Mr Dalmiya may wield the axe only after observing the performance of the Indian team in the next two Tests at Ahmedabad and Bangalore.

The main complaint against Wright is that he has “failed to inspire the Indian team to record victories on foreign soil”. But an impartial scrutiny of his performance shows that he has not done that badly, afterall. After he took over as coach of the Indian team before the home series against Zimbabwe in November last year, India beat Zimbabwe in the series, stunned Australia in the home series but got punched in the away series against Sri Lanka and South Africa. The return tour to Zimbabwe ended in a one-one deadlock.

The charge against Leipus is that he has failed to keep the Indian players match-fit, and has also failed to detect the ‘hidden injuries’ of some players. He could also not suggest proper treatment for the injuries suffered by star players like Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Javagal Srinath.

Unknown batsman flays SA attack

Perth, December 8
An almost unknown 21-year-old batsman pounded the South African attack here today as South Africa’s champion pace bowler Allan Donald failed to impress ahead of the first Test against Australia starting in Adelaide on Friday.

Scott Meuleman, a Western Australian right-hander with a top score of 46 from four previous first-class appearances, fashioned a stylish 109, embellished with a massive hooked six off Donald and 18 fours, on the second day of the four-day match at the WACA ground.

Western Australia went to stumps with 303 for three wickets after dismissing the tourists for 367 yesterday.

Meuleman, grandson of former Test batsman Ken Meuleman — who played in the Bradman era — is not even a regular member of the state side. AFP

Shoaib cleared by panel

Karachi, December 8
Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been cleared by the University of Western Australia’s review panel. PCB Director Munawwar Rana said on Friday that they had received a copy of the university’s review of the Sharjah footage on Shoaib Akhtar.

“The report confirms and reiterates its earlier findings of May 2001. That it is Shoaib’s peculiar anatomical characteristics that lead to the erroneous perception of throwing, “Mr Rana said. The 24-year-old Shoib Akhtar, famous for his speed, was reported for a suspect bowling action for the second time this year after the Sharjah final on November 4 by International Cricket Council (ICC) officials.

Airlines, PSB in title clash

New Delhi, December 8
The brilliant run of Air-India, which saw them lifting the Nehru Cup last month, came to a halt when Indian Airlines outplayed them 3-0 in the second semifinal of the 12th Lal Bahadur Shastri Hockey Tournament here today.

Indian Airlines will play Punjab and Sind Bank in the final tomorrow who defeated Central Industrial Security Force 2-1 in the first semi-final.

The match between the two leading teams, Air-India and Indian Airlines, was expected to showcase some brilliant hockey and in the end, after a goal-less first half, it ended as a lively affair.

Altaf Hussain struck a brace (45th and 54th minute) and Brojen Singh (57th min) were the goal scorers for Indian Airlines.

Goals eluded both the teams in the first half even though both had a few cracks at the rival ends. IA initiated the first threatening move through the right when captain Mohd Riaz put through to Brojen Singh.

AI straight away went on the counter-attack forcing IA to save an effort from Devinder Kumar. Five minutes later, the IA goal had a close shave when a good shot went inches wide.

The famed AI forwards who were scoring heavily throughout the tournament suddenly found the going tough as the IA defence comprising Len Aiyappa, Sanjay Bist and Rajnish Mishra throttled them.

AI came close after 24 minutes when a breakaway move from the centre by Rajpal Singh caught the rival defence off-guard. But in the end the shot missed the target by a whisker.

At the other end, IA forced their second penalty corner in the 33rd minute but the AI goalkeeper effected a good save to deny Rajnish Mishra.

IA went ahead in the 45th minute when Altaf-ur-Rahman scored off the fourth penalty corner after a brilliant relay from Samir Dad to Mukesh to Altaf.

Mukesh Kumar now moved to the centre from the right flank and suddenly found more freedom. Samir Dad on the left also became active and it became a bit too hot for AI defence to handle.

Altaf made full use of the good work by Mukesh and Dad when he broke through with Brojen Singh in tandem. Brojen slipped past a few defenders, gave it to Altaf who shook the net with a first time shot in the 54th minute.

Even as desperation crept up the Air-India ranks, Brojen Singh slammed in the third after three minutes.

Earlier, PSB rallied from a goal down in the second minute scored by Mangra Munda to win 2-1.

The bank men equalised in the fourth minute through Parminder Singh and two minutes after the break Sandeep Ghuman slammed in the winner, all the goals coming off penalty corners. PTI

RCF defeat DHA Mandi
Our Correspondent

Mandi, December 8
Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala maintained their supremacy, defeating DHA Mandi 3-1 on the third day of the ninth All-India Him Gold Cup Hockey Tournament being played in Paddal here today. The match between Steel Authority of India Limited and Corps of Signals ended in a goal-less draw.

In the women’s section, which was introduced for the first time in the tournament, SAIL held RCF to a goal-less draw. The second match between Khalsa Club, Jalandhar and Himachal Pradesh XI also ended without a goal being scored.

In the first match RCF got the breakthrough first in the ninth minute when Anil Ekka sounded the board for a 1-0 lead. In the 13th minute Pradeep of DHA Mandi levelled the score 1-1. Anil Ekka struck again in the 26th minute while the third goal was scored by Jagmohan Singh in the 28th minute. RCF earned three points with the win.

Sunil Kumar wins Asian jr title
M.S. Unnikrishnan

New Delhi, December 8
Sunil Kumar Sipaeya of Chandigarh has found the deco-turf court at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) a happy hunting ground as he struck it rich here yet again when he beat Wei Tai Liu of Chinese Taipei 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 15 minutes today to win the Asian Junior Tennis Championship.

Two years ago, Sunil Kumar had hit the national spotlight at the very same court—though the deco-turf was relaid recently—when he captured the DSCL National Open Tennis Tournament title, at the tender age of 16 years.

The basics of his game still remain the same, but in the past two years, Sunil Kumar has matured as a player, and this facet of his personality was amply demonstrated here today when he scrambled back from a set down, and an unwavering form at the start of the second set, to post a convincing victory in the end. He was in control even when he seemed to have slipped into the dumps.

Sunil collected 120 points for his triumph, while Liu gathered 80 points.

Chan Chin Wei of Chinese Taipei bagged the girls title beating second-seeded Hong Da-Jung of Korea 6-3, 6-4 while Hsie-Wu of Taipei won the boys doubles title beating compatriots Liu-Shih 6-3, 6-3.

Playing in front of an impressive gathering, Sunil Kumar won the final arguement in the battle of the left-handers, as he hung on gamely, despite his game going to pieces mid-way through the match. The hard-hitting Liu, whose powerful forehand and backhand returns earned him many valuable points, seemed to be in no mood to give up, as he fought with all his energy to put back all that was thrown at him, by Sunil with equal venom.

The going was good, to start with for both the players as games went with serves till 5-5. It looked as though Sunil would cruise to a straight sets victory when he broke Liu in the 11th game to lead 6-5. But serving for the set, Sunil got into needless trouble as he sprayed his shots wide, and to compound his worries, his service also started getting erratic. He landed in a lot of foot fault trouble, and dropped serve in the 12th game. In the tie-breaker too, Sunil continued to err, as Liu captured the set.

But in the second set, though he was broken in the first and ninth games, Sunil gathered his wits and fought back to regain the advantage by gaining breaks in the eighth, after muffing a golden chance in the fourth game, tenth and 12th to wrest the set.

In the deciding third set, Sunil was in complete control as the seemingly fatigued Liu started spraying his returns wide and long to give Sunil the points he was desperately looking for.

Sunil’s victory in the Asian Junior Championship comes after a gap of 10 years as Sandeep Kirtane was the last Indian junior to lift the title when he won it at Brune. The title triumph has given a big push to Sunil’s confidence as he gears up for the DSCL National Open Championship, starting at the DLTA courts on Monday.

Sinha to head panel on sports promotion
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 8
In a bid to rope in industry to fund sports activities in the country, the government has formed a consultative committee on government-industry cooperation in promotion of sports under the chairmanship of the Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha.

The committee also includes the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Ms Uma Bharati, Secretary and Joint Secretary in the department, the Expenditure Secretary and Secretary-Generals of the main chambers of commerce and industry — CII, ASSOCHAM, FICCI and PHD Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

At a meeting between the Finance Minister and Ms Bharati here last evening, it was decided that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will prepare a detailed action plan on the areas of cooperation between the government and the industry for promotion of sports and preparation of sportspersons keeping in mind India’s past performance and medal hopes for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.

Ms Bharati pointed out that there were several events like boxing, athletics, hockey, shooting, tennis, weightlifting and badminton where the corporate world could play a key role in uplifting standards.

She said the corporate sector can give assistance for creating sports infrastructure of international standards, setting up sports science cells and providing sports equipment of international standard.

She felt the corporate houses could provide assistance in implementing an immediate plan for training of sports persons upto the 2004 Olympics, as well as selecting juniors who would step into their shoes by the year 2005-06 for preparation for the 2008 Olympics.

The Sports Minister said there were also disciplines like football, volleyball, kho-kho and kabaddi which were popular in the country and the involvement of the corporate sector could go a long way in promotion of these sports.

The minister said that a sports academy was proposed to be set up in every state in one or two leading disciplines. The attempt was to select best available talent in sports between the age group of 10 to 13 years and scientifically groom them.

According to an official release, the representatives of the chambers of industries and commerce responded favourably to the proposals and assured all help and cooperation, particularly in the selection and promotion of promising sportspersons at an early age. The emphasis in the discussions was on evolving a focussed approach towards promoting selective sports with a target of the Olympics to be held in 2004 and 2008.

Mohali moat captured English media’s fancy

London, December 8
The moat that surrounds the field of play in the PCA Stadium at Mohali has caught the fancy of English cricket commentators who want similar ditches to be dug in cricket fields in England and elsewhere in Asia to prevent crowd invasions.

The moat effectively prevents invasions of the field by spectators without the need for the ugly high-wire fences that disfigure grounds elsewhere on the subcontinent and are banned in Britain because of the Safety of Sports Grounds Act, the commentators said.

The moat in Mohail is a “novelty”, they said. PTI

Pak players rebel against sponsors
LONDON:
The American military strikes in Afghanistan have cast a shadow for the first time on the sporting arena with Pakistani cricketers increasingly rebellious about the team’s association with the US multinational Pepsi company. A number of players led by Saeed Anwar are reportedly outraged at the American bombing and want the soft-drink company dropped as the team’s main sponsor. “Anwar is supported by six other players, and talks are soon to be held with Pakistan’s association over the Pepsi issue,” according to The Guardian newspaper. The players are being supported by a number of religious groups, it said, but noted that the problem for Pakistan might be finding a new sponsor. Pakistan does not have any large wealthy domestic companies, unlike its neighbour India, the paper said, adding that the Pepsi sponsorship is worth millions to Pakistan and pays the wages of the players and their travel costs.
