Giles may play in second Test
Ahmedabad, December 9 “I expect him to be fit. He has done everything today,” Hussain told reporters on Sunday after nets in the western city of Ahmedabad. England, who slumped to a 10-wicket defeat in last week’s first Test in Mohali, are desperate for Giles to be fit because the match, which starts on Tuesday, is expected to be played on a spin-friendly pitch. The tourists failed to reach 250 runs in either innings on a seamer-friendly Mohali track where Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh shared 15 wickets. Left-armer Giles, 28, was ruled out of the first match of the series with a bruised heel suffered in a tour match, leaving Richard Dawson to lead England’s spin attack in his first Test. An Achilles tendon injury restricted Giles to just one of this year’s five Ashes Tests, and although he was passed fit to take his place in the squad for the Indian tour, he did not play in the first two warm-up games. “We want to have Ashley back in the side,” Hussain said. “We want to give him every chance. But we need to see if he can go through five days.” Hussain’s side face the prospect of a 3-0 whitewash as the Indian spinners are expected to dominate in Ahmedabad and Bangalore, the venue for the third test, on slow, turning tracks. Hussain admitted his batsmen were still in the process of getting used to the conditions in India. “The pitches here turn from day two and we are trying to train and re-train the batsmen,” Hussain said. “We have got 11 batters and we have won matches in the past with contributions from one down to eleven.” He said shot selection and planning would be the key to doing well against the Indian attack. “Players have to plan to get around playing spinners,” Hussain said. Hussain criticised his team’s poor fielding in Mohali after four catches were dropped and a stumping missed, enabling India to pile up a match-winning total of 469 in their first innings. Hussain said the conditions in Ahmedabad could make life even more difficult for his inexperienced attack, hinting he would probably play an extra bowler. “In this part of the world, the temperature is four-five degrees higher,” he said. “So you need five bowlers.” Reuters |
Four-wicket win for Zimbabwe
Colombo, December 9 Zimbabwe, shot out for the lowest ever one-day total of 38 by Sri Lanka yesterday, came up with a timely team effort that helped restore their confidence. Prolific left-hander Andy Flower (47 not out) and captain Stuart Carlisle (47) helped Zimbabwe get to their target of 174 with 11 deliveries to spare. Flower faced 77 deliveries and hit two fours, while Carlisle struck four fours during his 92-ball essay. It was not smooth sailing for Zimbabwe, who threw away some wickets midway. W. Australia humiliate SA
Perth, December 9 Without star players Justin Langer, Damien Martyn and Adam Gilchrist, Western Australia smashed a first-innings 600 for eight wickets declared — the highest score any Australian state side has made against South Africa. It was the biggest score any team has made against South Africa since Australia thrashed 628 for eight wickets in the first Test at the Wanderers in 1997. South Africa, batting a second time after trailing by 233 runs on the first innings, were 40 without loss at stumps on the third day of the four-day game, needing to bat well on the final day tomorrow to avoid an embarrassing defeat. Together were Gary Kirsten (28) and Jacques Rudolph (12). Western Australia’s big three batting guns were rested for the game at the request of the national selectors so they can prepare for the Adelaide confrontation. The South African tour management must be alarmed by the attack’s lack of penetration, even though skipper Shaun Pollock, a key component in the bowling ranks, is sitting this game out. Team spearhead Allan Donald, who bowled only four overs today because of blistered feet caused by new boots, finished with an unflattering one for 100 from 25 overs. Fast bowler Matthew Nicholson, who has played one Test for Australia, took full advantage of the mediocre bowling to claim his first century in top-class cricket — a slashing 101 not out from 139 balls with three sixes and 13 fours. Nicholson and Bradley Hogg (90) piled on 175 in 154 minutes for the seventh wicket. Donald broke through for his first wicket of the match in his 24th over of the innings, unfurling an overpitched delivery to york young left-hander Marcus North on 71. Donald, in his first match for almost two months after being injured, did not return to the bowling crease after completing four overs for 15 runs in the first session, even though he remained on the field. Former Zimbabwe Test batsman Murray Goodwin (61) was billiantly run out by Claude Henderson, who also trapped Ryan Campbell (28) with one of his cleverly flighted left-arm spinners. But Henderson blotted his copybook when he missed a caught-and-bowled chance from Nicholson on 60. AFP |
Argentina defeat Japan
Kuala Lumpur, December 9 The win gave Argentina, winners of the World Cup qualifiers in July, three points and also kept their chances of making to the final alive. Argentina had lost their opening match to South Africa 2-3. It was the Japanese who showed more enterprise in the early stages as they attacked down the middle using their speed to good advantage. Japan scored the first goal in the 12th minute when Naoya Iwadate collected the ball on top of the circle and sent in a stunning shot that beat goalkeeper Pablo Moreira. The Argentines then slowly managed to regroup and were soon making better efforts upfront. The equaliser came off the second penalty corner in the 21st minute. Santiago Cupurro, who took the flick in place of Lombi, managed to strike a hard flick which Japanese goalkeeper Jun Takaashi failed to stop. With the equaliser in the bag, the Argentines soon took control and were more dangerous with their moves. Takahashi was in fine form to deny Argentina on several occassions. But four minutes into the second half Argentina took the lead. Once again it was Capurro who was the scorer but this time it was a field attempt. He collected a free hit from Juan Pablo Hourquebei, and slammed it past Takahashi from close range. The Argentines had three other penalty corners to score but were let down by poor execution of moves. The Japanese too had two penalty corners in the later stages of the match but they could not break through to score. In the end the Argentines held on to the lead and were able to walk off with the three points. Argentine coach Jorge Ruiz said after the match they were lucky to have won as they did not play that well. “We are happy to have won as this will be a good morale booster for the players in the next match on Monday. It is good for our spirit especially the way they played. It was the good match for us and to walk off with the win,” he said. The Argentines play Belgium in their third match tomorrow. PTI |
Hockey: India take on Malaysia today Kuala Lumpur, December 9 India, after their 1-0 victory against Belgium and a 2-2 draw with South Africa, are placed third with four points. South Africa also have four points but pushed India to third with a better goal average. Malaysia sit atop with six points after two matches and are expected to go all out tomorrow to retain their position on the points table. Malaysian coach Paul Lissek knows that a win against India will push them firmly on the path to a Champions Challenge final and a shot at winning it and qualifying for the prestigious Champions Trophy, next year. So, he has let the boys know the importance of tomorrow’s match to be played under lights at the Bukit Jalil Stadium. His Indian counterpart Cedric D’Souza also realises all that is at stake tomorrow saying, “The match will be crucial. But I think, every match is important. The gaps between teams have decreased. Everybody plays a lot of international hockey and so they know about each other’s weaknesses. The Indians have had not the best of the preparations on their rest day today as some of them have been suffering from fever and bouts of suspected flu. Mid-fielder Ignace Tirkey is already recovering in hospital with malaria. In the last match against South Africa, both Sabu Varkey and Kanwalpreet Singh were down with high fever. Not taking any chances, the Indian team management sent the entire squad for blood tests today. Lissek though doesn’t have all these worries. Two consecutive wins in two matches have restored the confidence to a side that had been down after the disastrous performance of the junior side in the World Cup, the tournament where India lifted the Cup. Lissek, himself, has been under fire from old-timers who feel his European methods do not work in a country known for its flashy brand of hockey. The team, however, is solidly behind its coach. Major threats to india would come from Malaysian forward Chairil Anwar, Mohammad Radzi and full-back-turned-attacking midfielder Chua Boon Huat. Besides these, there is constant threat from Kuhan, who can turn a match on its head with his flair for splitting the defences with his passes. But overall, with all their fitness problems, India still have the firepower to get past the hosts. “They always create the chances and its a matter of not letting them go,” said D’Souza. However, D’Souza will do to remember that India created enough chances against South Africa, but only ended up with a 2-2 draw. Baljit Singh Dhillon, Dhanraj Pillay, Deepak Thakur, Prabhjot Singh, Vikram Pillay, Bipin Fernandez and Arjun Halappa are experienced and can put it across Malaysia. Backing them up would be Thirumalvalvan, Sukhbir Singh Gill in the midfield and India still have their trump card Jugraj Singh for the penalty corners. In all, a side that is more talented and experienced than the Malaysians. The important question is whether India with four points, can squeeze through a win to go to the top of the standings with seven points. The Malaysian team and its fans, who will definitely pack in, will try and prevent that from happening. PTI |

BSF to clash with SAIL in semis Mandi, December 9 The first match of the day played between SAIL and Northern Railway, ended in a draw, with both the teams qualifying for the semifinals due to their better goal average. Playing on a fast note, the SAIL boys earned a penalty corner first and Amlok Singh’s shot had enough power to zip past the stunned Northern Railway goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. Half time score was 1-0. Brijnav Singh of Northern Railway scored an equaliser in the 48th minute, with the reverse flick making the score 1-1. Corps of Signal failed to qualify for the semifinals as SAIL and Northern Railway had a better goal average. In the women’s section RCF bundled out Yamaha Club, Mandi, 8-0. Mohan Devinder of RCF score a hat-trick netting five goals in the 1st, 9th, 12th, 13th and 59th minutes. Harvinder Kaur, Renu Bala, and Sandeep Kaur scored a goal each. RCF girls earned 12 penalty corners but could convert only two. In the second match Himachal Pradesh and RSP Rourkela, the Himachal girls overpowered RSP 3-1. |

PSB lift hockey title New Delhi, December 9 The young-blooded bank team, who had earlier beaten Indian Airlines 4-1 in one of the league matches, did an encore to oust the star-studded team of veterans in a neck-and-neck fight. The bankers’ march towards victory commenced with a penalty corner which was converted by captain Parminder Singh through an indirect hit that left the Airlines custodian stranded in the 25th minute of the game. But the euphoria was shortlived as the IA striker Bimal Lakra scored the equaliser within five minutes. His brilliant move from the centre dodged many defenders and the ‘keeper before finding the target. The Airlines had missed a golden chance to restore parity a minute earlier as Brojen Singh’s hit from an Altaf-ur-Rehman relay went over the bars. The IA fate was sealed in the 42nd minute of the match when Parminder Singh once again made a brilliant move and relayed the ball to Sandeep Singh Ghuman who banged it in the rival citadel. The Airlines team was without its stars Mohammed Riaz, Mukesh Kumar, Samir Dad and Sanjai Bist for the first 10 minutes. PTI |
DSCL Open: Rohan, Rushmi get top billing New Delhi, December 9 The Rs 10 lakh prize money championship has attracted the cream of tennis talent from all over the country, though the shifting of the championship from October to December, has slightly affected entries from south and western India. The men’s, women’s and under-18 boys and girls events will be held from December 10 to 16 while the junior events will be held from December 17 to 22. Amanjot Singh of Chandigarh heads the seedings in the boys’ under-18 event while Megha Vakharia has been given pride of place as top seed in the girls’s under-18 championship. The seedings have been done on the basis of the current ranking of the players, though Sunil Kumar Sipeaya of Chandigarh, who lifted the Asian Junior Tennis Championship here yesterday, does not figure among the top eight seeds. Sunil had not played many tournaments in the country last year, and that has affected his ranking. Even defending champion Nitin Kirtane has been seeded third, as the number two position is being occupied by Mustafa Ghouse. Amanjot Singh is the only other player from Chandigarh to figure in the men’s draw. Shruti Dhawan is the only player from Chandigarh to feature in the women’s main draw. In the boys under-18 section, besides top seed Amanjot Singh, four other players from ‘City Beautiful’ figure in the main draw. They are Chatwinder Singh, Tushar Liberhan, Saurabh Singh and Saurabh Kohli. For Sunil Kumar, the newest Asian junior champion, the nationals will be a perfect platform to test his standing among the seniors in the country. He had created a sensation two years back, when he bagged the DSCL Open National Championship singles title as a callow 16-year-old. Last year, he was outgunned by Nitin Kirtane, on his way to the throne. The DSCL Open Championships, which were to be held in October, were postponed to December as the original dates were found unsuitable due to the Afro-Asian Games. But even after the Afro-Asian Games were postponed due to various reasons, the All-India Tennis Association stuck to the revised dates for the DSCL Championships, as the National Games in Punjab came in-between. Ms Neelam Anand of DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd said the postponement had slightly affected entries from south and west due to the exam season in these zones, but the quality and quantity of entries had still not been affected. In fact, the response has been so overwhelming that the number of entries had crossed last year’s figure of 1550, necessitating three days of qualifying rounds. The DSCL has been promoting the open nationals for the past nine years, and the event has received an exalted status in the tennis calendar. Ms Anand said Bharat Petroleum and Yonex have associated themselves with the championship as associate sponsors. Catch Natural Mineral Water will be the official beverage. The DSCL Open, the largest domestic tournament, attracts entries from all over India, and neighbouring countries. The format covers men’s, women’s, boys and girls under-18, under-16 and under-14 events. With the setting up of the India Tennis Centre at the R.K. Khanna Stadium, the DLTA complex boasts of brand new facilities. The facilities were put to test during the just-concluded Asian Junior Championships and passed muster as the players and officials were extremely pleased with the world class accommodation, playing and change-room facilities on offer at the DLTA now. |
Golf: Irina Brar to the fore again Chandigarh, December 9 Irina said it was her second consecutive win at the Eastern India meet but this year she won by 21 strokes with a score of 283. Irina scored 71 on the first day,73 on the second day, 70 on third day and 69 on the fourth day. She had taken a lead of six strokes over Parnita on the very first day who scored 77. Later Parnita scored 79 on the second day, 74 on the third and fourth day respectively. Runner-up Parnita Grewal also of Chandigarh had a big difference and scored 304. However, Vandana Aggarwal of West Bengal, who closely followed Parnita and scored 306, came third. Miali Talwar from Delhi also scored 306 and was declared fourth. Irina disclosed that last year she had won the title in the same meet while the runner-up was Parnita, but the lead was of 14 strokes. Irina, who was gifted a new ‘club’ by her grandmother, has won four consecutive titles. Irina, a sports apprentice with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), had won three other titles this year with the same ‘club’ at the Punjab Ladies Open Golf, Northern India Open Golf and Western India Open Golf meet. Another tournament in which she plans to participate is West Bengal Ladies Open from January 8 followed by two other national meets — Biloo Sethi Meet and the All-India Ladies Golf Meet at Mumbai — in the last week of January 2002. Irina said her employers, IOC, were helping her in a big way and she along with Anjali and Shruti Khanna were other women golfers in the same organisation. She said the IOC was giving second class AC fare for taking part in various golf tournaments. Irina says she will pursue her BA Honours in psychology after Class XII and wants to be a sports psychologist. Her mother also nodded her head in agreement and said in lighter vein that Irina actually wanted to join the London School of Economics but golf came in her way. |
