“Lt-Gen A.A. Niazi, General
Officer Commanding-in-Chief, of the then Eastern Command of the Pakistan
army, was never arrested. He had surrendered after I had sent him a
note: ‘My dear Abdullah, I am here. The game is up. I suggest you give
yourself up to me. I will look after you,” recalls Maj-Gen Gandharav
Singh Nagra (retd), the man who was commanding the composite Indian
forces and was the first Indian officer to enter Dhaka on December 17.
