Of dusty books and broken racks
At least 100-year-old Pandit Moti Lal Nehru Library opened during the Queen Victoria’s era is in a state of utter neglect. The library is run by the Municipal Corporation. The second storey of the library is in a debilitating condition. The plaster on the walls has chipped off and the iron rods can be seen from under the roof at many places. The damped walls of the library are covered with cobwebs.
CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE
Before Partition, readers from far-flung areas, including Lahore and Karachi, would visit this prestigious library. Most college students at that time never bought any book as almost all books were available in the library and students used to consult various books to make notes.
The dust-gathered portrait of Pandit Moti Lal Nehru raises a question on the cleanliness of the library. A thick layer of dust is visible on books, stocked in broken racks. One can find holes in books made by silver fish.
Even a casual visitor can judge the indifferent attitude of employees. Thousands of valuable books like encyclopaedia are piled up in a haphazard manner.
Sources say due to lack of a proper checking system, stealing of books cannot be ruled out. Readers complain that there is nobody to guide them. Even the catalogue is unplanned and, hence, it is difficult to find a book of one’s choice.
The library also lacks a proper lighting system.
CAREER QUERIES HOTLINE
Q: I am in Class X and preparing for CBSE Board exams. How can I avail of sample question papers to help me prepare for the exams?
A: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has prepared sample question papers for students appearing in Class X and Class XII examinations. The publication includes question paper design, blueprint and question-wise analysis. The CBSE also provides comprehensive marking schemes which will be useful for candidates and teachers. Those interested may contact:
Central Board of Secondary Education, Shiksha Kendra, 2C Centre, Preet Vihar, New Delhi-110092 or CBSE’s regional offices. You could also log on to their website: www.cbseindia.org.
Besides this a number of student websites also display mock papers to give you a taste of the real thing.
Q: Could you please tell me about the selection procedure for recruiting doctors in the Indian Army?
A: The Indian Army offers Short Service Commission (SSC) as Medical Officers in the Army Medical Corps for civilian doctors who have passed the MBBS examination. The age limit for grant of SSC is 45 years.
You must be enrolled/empanelled with State Medical Register. Selection is through interview and selected candidates join in the rank of Captain.
You should apply in response to the advertisements published in leading national dailies from time to time. For further information, contact:
The Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services, DG-1A, M/o Defence, ‘L’ Block, New Delhi 110001.
Q: I am doing BE (Chem) and would like to pursue a career in Cosmetology (Cosmetics). Could you please suggest a good technical course?
A: Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), HR Mahajani Marg, Matunga, Mumbai 400019 offers a non-affiliated Licenciate PG Diploma in Food & Drugs & Cosmetics Analysis of 2-years duration.
Q: I’m a student of 10+2 (Maths). I want to make a career in Banking. How should I go about it?
A: Till recently, nationalised banks used to recruit Bank Probationary Officers (POs) through a written test and interview conducted by the Banking Service Recruitment Board (BSRB).
However, the Bank PO Exam has now been discontinued. Henceforth, Banks will conduct their own exams as per their requirements depending on the kind of staff they require.
However private and international banks in India offer exciting jobs for professionals. Today almost all the leading names — ANZ Grindlays, Bank of America, CitiBank, Hong Kong Bank, ABN Amro, Stanchart, etc — have their branches in India.
There are three essential routes to entering a foreign bank: via junior-level jobs, middle-level jobs and senior-level jobs. The eligibility criteria vary for each level. But the entry of freshers is only at the first two stages. You should preferably have a MBA (preferably Finance), CA or MFC or possess experience in banking or financial institutions. Some banks prefer candidates with a diploma in international finance or accountancy.
At most banks, selection is through a written test and those selected are put through an intensive internal training programme where they are trained according to the bank’s requirements.
Two of the most attractive aspects of working in a foreign bank are the salaries and perks offered.
Although a few universities University of Chennai. Bharathidasan University, Manipur University. University of Burdwan, University of Delhi (Bachelor’s in Financial Investment & Analysis) offer courses in Banking at the Bachelor’s level, you don’t necessarily need a specific course in banking to get a bank job.

A: Career opportunities are wide and varied for those specialising in Mathematics. Moreover, the skills you develop while studying for a maths degree - such as the ability to think logically and methodically - are great assets in any profession.
Some of the careers where a mathematical background is particularly valued are: Accountancy, actuarial work (insurance), taxation, management, software programming, finance, operations research, market research, and media planning.
Another growth area lies in the banking and financial services sector where the work centres on portfolio management, financial control methods and forecasting.
