Hayden sets up Australia’s victory charge
Adelaide, December 17 Hayden smashed 131 in a little over four hours to pass Brian Lara as the world’s leading runscorer for 2001 and allow Australia’s captain Steve Waugh to make an early declaration and give his bowlers a shot at the South African top order. With his star-studded batting line-up sacrificing their wickets in pursuit of quick runs, Waugh called an end to proceedings 48 minutes before stumps with the australian second innings total on 309 for seven, leaving South Africa the near-impossible target of 375 to claim victory. Waugh’s declaration left his bowlers 12 overs at the end of a long, hot day and they responded in magnificent style with McGrath dismissing Herschelle Gibbs for nine and Warne removing Gary Kirsten for seven on the final delivery of the day to leave the visitors teetering at 17 for two. Fast bowler McGrath made the initial breakthrough when he dug a ball in short which Gibbs deflected to Justin Langer at bat-pad before leg-spinner Warne cleaned up Kirsten when the left-hander offered the simplest of chances to Ricky Ponting at silly mid-off. History suggests the South Africans cannot win. Only twice has a team ever scored more runs in the fourth innings to win a Test, while the highest successful run chase at Adelaide Oval was Australia’s 315 for six against England. Hayden and Mark Waugh put the Australians in a position to push for victory after their 181-run third-wicket partnership at almost a run a ball. They came together before lunch with the total on 66 for two after first-innings century-maker Justin Langer was caught behind off Shaun Pollock for one and Jacques Kallis trapped ponting lbw for 25, and they parted after tea with the total on 247. Hayden brought up his fourth Test century this year and the fifth of his 25-match career half just before tea, reaching the mark off 170 balls in double-quick time. The left-handed opener went on to make another 31 quick runs, taking his aggregrate this year to 1,250 at an average of 59.52, belting 12 fours and four sixes along the way before he charged down the pitch to Kallis and was bowled. Mark Waugh reached his half-century off 94 balls with two successive boundaries off Kallis through to third man but made his exit when he top-edged a sweep off Kallis straight to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher. No pressure, says Wright
Bangalore, December 17 “I don’t think we are under pressure. We are already one up in the three-Test series. We are looking forward to this game and are hoping to lift our performance”, Wright, who is on an extension as coach, told waiting newspersons after the nets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. When asked whether the team was under pressure to perform following the drawn Ahmedabad Test, he said: “They played very well. A couple of them batted well. It was a good toss to win for England at Ahmedabad. We play to win every match”. On the newly-laid wicket at the stadium, he said “after having a close look at it, I feel that the surface may help fast bowlers”. About the quality of wicket-keeping in the Ahmedabad match, Wright merely said taking catches that came in the way would make all the difference between winning and losing. Wright, whose continuation as coach would be decided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India at its meeting here on December 23, refused to reply to a question on whether winning the toss would be a crucial factor in this match. Earlier, the Indian team had a strenuous workout and batting, bowling and catching practice. However, the England team preferred to stay at the hotel. Anil Kumble, who is on the verge of becoming the second Indian to reach the milestone of 300 wickets, was seen practising hard at the nets on his home ground. Only former Indian captain and veteran all-rounder Kapil Dev has achieved this feat for the country earlier. Both the teams arrived here yesterday afternoon. India would have another round of net practice tomorrow and England would be practising in the afternoon. India had won the first Test at Mohali. England would fly home from here immediately after the Test and return for the one-day series beginning in the new year. UNI |
Haryana beat Delhi Patiala, December 17 Opting to bat, Haryana were off to a disastrous start with the Delhi medium pacers Ashish Nehra and Amit Bhandari exploiting the early morning moisture. The first to go was Chetan Sharma when he was flummoxed by a slower one bowled by Amit Bhandari and drove the ball uppishly to mid on where Ashish Nehra did not have to move an inch to take the catch. Indiscretion cost the wickets of Jitender Singh and Sumeet Sharma and it was left to skipper Ajay Ratra to repair the damage. The young keeper single handedly made the rival attack look pedestrian by playing a variety of clean and crisp strokes on both sides of the wicket. Ratra rotated the strike intelligently to take Haryana to a position of relative safety at 217 for 9. Scoreboard: Haryana: 217 for 9 in 50 overs. New Zealand cautious against B’desh Hamilton, December 17 Although New Zealand recently drew their series with Australia, and came close to winning the final Test there, they are mindful that it has been a year in which Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have beaten them. New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming said today he was seeking a “professional” performance and was not concerned at what point in the Test victory came. “The natural tendency with Bangladesh at the moment is we should move forward and knock them over, but if you think like that then you go away from the things that worked in Australia,” Fleming said.

Hussain has upset stomach Bangalore, December 17 “With India being one-up in the series, we are hopeful about the skipper’s recovery well in time for the toss, if not by tomorrow afternoon,” Mr Phil Neale, the operations manager of the visiting English side, said here today. Mr Neale said Hussain, who developed the problem last night, spent the day recuperating and was feeling much better. “I do not think there is any anxiety about his leading the side which is about 36 hours from now,” he said. Two of Hussain’s team-mates, Mark Butcher and Michael Vaughan, had also suffered stomach infection during the second Test at Ahmedabad. PTI |
