PUDA offers 300 plots by draw of lots
SAS Nagar, December 22
At least 300 plots in different developed sectors of the town are being offered by draw of lots. In a policy decision, the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority has decided to offer residential plots to serious buyers at the rate of Rs 3744 per sq yard.

Seven arrested for illegal mining
Panchkula, December 22
The local police has achieved success with the arrest of seven persons involved in illegal mining in two separate incidents today. Ten tippers, one car and two JCB machines being used for illegal mining from the Ghaggar riverbed were also impounded by the police.

School building sites to remain vacant
Constructions only on request
Panchkula, December 22
The vacant sites for government schools in various sectors of the township will continue to remain so, with Haryana Urban Development Authority having decided to construct the school buildings for the state Education Department only on request.

Golf Club  elections
Chandigarh, December 22
The Golf Club went to polls today. A total of 1,128 members cast their votes. The club has a total of 1,800 permanent members who enjoy voting rights.
The polling took place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. During the day a festive atmosphere prevailed with members playing rounds of golf and enjoying lunch.

1-yr RI for city resident
Chandigarh, December 22
A local court today gave one-year rigorous imprisonment to a city resident, Rani Devi, in a cheque bounce case. The UT Judicial Magistrate, Mr Ajay Singal, observed that “the accused has been held guilty and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for one year under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act”.

Scenes dragged to boredom
‘Aamdani Atthanni Khurcha Rupaiya’ (Nirman and KC, Panchkula) is a lacklustre presentation, which has a dragging storyline of a middle class setting in a metropolitan. Govinda is a big crowd attraction but the direction of K Raghvendra Rao has failed to leave any impression.

Stork chick succumbs to injuries
Chhat Bir, December 22
A stork chick that was caught by the zoo authorities some days ago succumbed to its injuries in the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, this afternoon.
Sources in the zoo revealed that the chick had sustained injuries in a fight with some other birds in an enclosure where it was released after being captured from the zoo lake.

The annual Rajbhasha Samaroh of the Town Official Language Implementation Committee was held at the Technical Teachers Training Institute in Sector 26 on Thursday.

250 participate in knitting contest
Chandigarh, December 22
About 250 students from 23 schools of the city participated in the zonal round of ‘Aao Bune Knitting Contest’ today.
Students from class V to class XI participated and knitted creative and innovative patterns out of the material provided to them.

Man succumbs to injuries
Chandigarh, December 22
A resident of Sector 33, Surat Singh, who had been knocked down by an unknown scooterist near the Sector 32-33 crossing on December 20, succumbed to his injuries. He had been admitted to the PGI in a serious condition. The police has registered a case.

 
EDUCATION

Scholarships to Singapore — a dream come true
Chandigarh, December 22
It was nothing less than a dream come true for seven city students who have been awarded scholarships by the Government of Singapore for further studies.
The lucky students, including four girls, had taken the Singapore Airlines Youth Scholarship examination in September. For over 30 days, they kept their fingers crossed.

X’mas celebrations mark last working day in schools

The 10-day winter break in city schools began with Christmas celebrations which marked the last working day of school for the students, here today.
With decorated Christmas trees, Santa Claus romping about at the school premises with gifts for the students, dancing, partying and merry-making, happiness reflected on the faces of the students as they participated in the celebrations.

Fun and frolic mark X’mas celebrations
SAS Nagar, December 22
Fun and frolic marked the Christmas celebrations at the Foundation School, here today. The school premises were decorated with coloured papers, balloons and banners. The tiny tots danced and sang songs.

Fast by teachers enters third day

The chain fast being observed by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union outside the office of the DPI (Punjab) entered its third day here today.
The fast is being organised by the committee representing 172 non-government aided and aided colleges in the state.

As many as 700 blood donors of the city were awarded at a special ceremony organised by the Blood Bank Society Chandigarh at Panjab University here today.
Lt-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT, was the chief guest on the occasion.

DAV gymnasts are PU champs
Chandigarh, December 22
The Sector 10 DAV College of Chandigarh won the Panjab University Gymnastics Championship for men by securing 159.10 points. Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Chandigarh won the second place, while the Panjab University campus was at the third place.
