Karzai sworn in Afghan premier
Kabul, December 22
Soft-spoken aristocrat Hamid Karzai was today sworn in as leader of Afghanistan in the first peaceful handover of power in 28 years before tribal elders, UN delegates, diplomats and a top US General gathered to witness an end to war.

n sheer desperation, India has at last become diplomatically proactive in response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism which reached its outrageous climax on December 13 with the dastardly attack on the heart of Indian democracy — Parliament.

USA asks Pak to act against LeT, JeM
Washington, December 22
Obviously satisfied by the evidence given by India about the attack on Parliament House by Pakistan-based terrorist organisations — the JeM and the LeT — the USA has asked Islamabad to take immediate action against the outfits but rejected claims that the Pakistan Government was involved in the incident.

Pak freezing of LeT assets ‘not enough’
New Delhi, December 22
India today made it clear that the Pakistan Government’s reported freezing of assets of terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba alone was not enough and what it expected was nothing short of “all-round comprehensive action” against the terrorist groups operating from that country.

Xian (China), December 22
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf today said India’s decision to recall its High Commissioner from Pakistan and sever transportation links with his country was “very arrogant.”

India won’t attack Pak, says Powell

The USA has assured Pakistan that India would not attack it despite growing tensions between the two neigbours and said New Delhi would also not cross the Line of Control, official sources here said.

Pak may lose MFN status

The Vajpayee government is contemplating taking more political and diplomatic steps against Pakistan in retaliation for its role in the December 13 attack on Parliament House and one of the measures under consideration is the withdrawal of the Most Favoured Nation status given to Islamabad.

The Delhi police today arrested an intruder who tried to enter the Rashtrapati Bhavan, a high security area, in the wee hours of today.

More US troops hunt for Laden
Washington, December 22
As US warplanes pounded a convoy in Afghanistan, reportedly killing 65 persons and destroying vehicles, more US troops joined the hunt for militant leader Osama bin Laden and his followers, military officials said here. Pentagon spokesman Lieut-Col David Lapan, however, yesterday denied a report that the US strike on Thursday had hit a convoy.

Hostile slogans against Lahore bus service

The ‘Sada-e-Sarhad’ (Lahore-Delhi bus) that started as a symbol of goodwill between India and Pakistan enjoyed shortlived accolades even as the Samjhauta Express was given the halt orders in the silver jubilee year of its historic run since 1976.
