Q I am doing MCom and wish to become a chartered financial analyst. Is it a full-time course? What does it cost? What qualifications are required for working as an analyst in a credit rating agency?

Balram Kumar

A Typically credit rating agencies like CRISIL, ICRA or Fitch recruit MBAs and CAs as stock market/financial analysts. The work typically involves analysing specific industries and sectors of the economy to arrive at the ratings. Additional CFA qualification would be an asset.

The CFA program is offered through distance learning by Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI).

The core focus of this 3-level professional programme is on Corporate & International Finance, Investment Management and Financial Services to groom financial analysts and investment managers. Recognised by AICTE as a PG Diploma in Financial Analysis, the programme is considered equivalent to a Master’s degree by IGNOU and a couple of other universities for admission to PhD programmes in Management.

The total cost of all 3 levels of the program is Rs 36,000/-.

Although the curriculum remains the same, the CFA Program is available in 3-yr Regular and 2-yr Accelerated formats. Graduates from any discipline (50% agg) are eligible.

However, the Accelerated Program is open to professionals like CAs, CS and those with postgraduate qualifications in management, finance or economics as well as full-time students of these courses. Officers in government banks, financial institutions and insurance companies, Class-I officers in Central and State government services or executives with minimum 5 years experience are also eligible. Q I am a student of modest means. I have managed to get admission to NYU. But I am very confused whether I should live on campus or outside.

Parvesh Bhatia

A If you are going on a limited budget, you must first accept the fact that the years you spend studying will be hard work and more hard work and nothing but lots of hard work!

Whether you can afford to commute daily from a distant and obviously cheaper location to the main campus to sustain your idea of studying in a big city college is a decision you have to make yourself.

In case you think this is not a very comfortable possibility, especially if you are on a teaching assistantship for 4-5 hours a day, you may have to give up this option.

Most colleges have housing offices that can help you find local housing - in an apartment or home that you can share with other students.

The room and board cost for on-campus accommodation assumes that you will share a room with one student and have regular meals at the college cafeteria.

You can also get part-time jobs in exchange for free stay in some of the residence halls, and these jobs can usually be held along with the main assistantship.

Q I am interested in town planning. Please tell me something about it?

Vinay Sood

A Town planning is a profession in itself with further specialisations such as environmental planning, housing planning, industrial, recreational and transport planning.

Before making a plan, the town planner has to assess and evaluate all available information. This involves surveying the area and consulting those in the government’s health, sanitation and transport departments besides working with architects, lawyers, civil engineers, statisticians, sociologists and economists.

As much of the information is technical and statistical in nature, computers are extensively used to analyze and interpret the data in the form of charts and graphs. Besides being computer savvy, you must also possess administrative and managerial skills, ability to write reports, address meetings.

After your Master’s in Town Planning, you can join a firm of housing developers or government organizations like the Municipal Development Authority or private planning consultants. There are openings in tourism boards, health authorities, construction companies and environmental organizations. You can also switch to consulting after sufficient experience.

Master’s level courses in town planning and related areas are offered at various universities. Eligibility is BArch, BE (Civil) or Master’s degree in Geog/Socio/Eco/Law.

Q I have a diploma in radio & TV presentation and am looking for a career in the television medium. Please give me a few tips to get going.

Divya Vaish

A Now that you have a basic idea of what this field entails, you can look for openings as an Announcer/Presenter/Anchorperson in Doordarshan as well as in the numerous private channels.

The job of an Announcer/Presenter includes reading scripted commentaries, interviewing or presenting news bulletins and news flashes, introducing recorded music. A good university education or journalistic background, screen presence, a keen, open and well-informed mind, besides a reasonable interest in and knowledge of the topic being featured are some essentials. At times, you may even be required to conduct background research on the topic to be featured.

As you must have also gathered from the course, the ability to appear calm and confident even in a crisis (which could be anything from a wrong cue to forgotten lines or even a persistent fly that decides to soft-land on your nose) are of equal importance.

It also helps to be alert, cautious and intelligent at all times. The ability to ad-lib and script your own announcements are definite assets. A pleasant appearance, a well-modulated voice and a friendly unflappable personality, being the other essentials for this job.

Be prepared: you’ll have to go through countless auditions, dummy runs and work bloody hard to get a foothold.

It may be a good idea to start out as a casual Presenter on one of the channels or even as an Announcer or Radio Jockey before trying to go about it full-time. Also try your hand at compering live shows to gain confidence.

And if you are witty, sharp, charming and in love with the camera, you can even go for the highly prized remunerative slot of a VJ (Video Jockey).

But let me warn you: it’s a highly competitive field and there aren’t too many openings currently.
