India not against Pak but terrorism: BJP chief
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 24
In an apparent climbdown, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today said that India might not go for a war against hostile neighbour Pakistan.

Almost giving a surprise as different party leaders have been issuing bellicose statements since terrorist attack on Parliament on December 13, BJP President K. Jana Krishnamurthy said: “I don’t think we will be going for war...If war is thrust on us we will have to meet it”.

“We are not against Pakistan or its people or wage a war against them. But we are against terrorism and Pakistan must desist from abetting terrorism,” Mr Krishnamurthy told a select group of newspersons.

To a specific question whether he anticipated a war against Pakistan, the BJP Chief merely said “who can predict a war.”

Asked what actions he would suggest against Pakistan under the circumstances, Mr Krishnamurthy said “people might suggest many things which might have severe consequences. Only the Government is in a position to decide on what kind of action it could take keeping well in mind its consequences.”

“We should not hustle the government (to take action). It will be against the interest of the country,” he added.

The statement of the BJP President assumes great significance, especially when Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader L.K. Advani has asked the nation to be fully prepared for “a decisive victory over Pakistan-sponsored terrorism” and several BJP members in their personal capacity strongly demanding an attack on terrorist training camps in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir.

Historical facts on Gen Zorawar ‘distorted’
Tripti Nath
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 24
The Akali Dal (Amritsar) has urged the Communication Ministry overseeing the Department of Posts to undo the distortion of historical facts about Gen Zorawar Singh, the Dogra General of the Khalsa army.

In a letter to Communication Minister, Pramod Mahajan, party president Simranjit Singh Mann has stated that a brochure distributed on the occasion of the release of a commemorative stamp on Gen Zorawar Singh in May-end this year made “no mention of Lahore Darbar (court) of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s government known as Sarkar-e-Khalsa, of which Gen Zorawar Singh was an important dignitary.”

Terming this as a “blatant distortion of history,” Mr Mann said: “It is painful how historical facts regarding the history of Sikhs have been and withheld from the people in this document.”

The Akali leader has requested the minister to direct the department concerned to analyse the historical facts completely and convey the correct position to the people.

The party has prepared a resume of Gen Zorawar Singh based on two books on Sikh history authored by K.K. Khullar and J.D. Cuningham. The party has sent a copy of the resume along with one of the brochure to the minister.

According to the resume, Gen Zorawar Singh joined as a messenger boy in the Dogra Corps of the Khalsa Army of Lahore Darbar. He was stationed in Jammu under the command of Raja Gulab Singh, Governor of Jammu and a favourite of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It further says that Gen Zorawar Singh was given the command of the best soldiers to bring Leh under the control of the Maharaja of Punjab. He captured Sanku, Ladakh, Purag, Kartee and fort of Suru and Sod.

In violation of the Treaty of 1809 with the Lahore Darbar, the English pressured Maharaja Sher Singh to direct his feudal lords to withdraw from Lama’s territory. Gen Zorawar Singh was recalled but before the order could reach him, he was surrounded by a numerically superior Chinese force.

He was hit by a bullet and the enemy took away his body. About 20 km from the present Indo-Chinese border, the Tibetans raised a memorial in his honour — the only memorial in the world in the honour of a defeated commander at the place of his death at Tpyo, duly sanctified by a samadhi called “Singha-ka-chorten”.

During the Indo-Chinese war in 1962, the samadhi is said to have been demolished by the Chinese forces.

SP terms expelled MPs ‘BJP agents’
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 24
Reacting to the allegations by the four rebel Samajwadi Party MPs, including three expelled MPs, the party leadership today launched a counter-attack saying that they were acting as “agents” of the BJP ahead of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and challenged them to contest afresh as BJP nominees.

Samajwadi Party General Secretaries Ram Gopal Yadav and Amar Singh today alleged that the BJP had become “panicky” over the prospects of losing Uttar Pradesh assembly elections and was using new tactics to tarnish the image of the party by activising such “agents”.

Accusing the four, former Union Minister Balram Singh Yadav, Ramakant Yadav, Bhalchandra Yadav and Kunwar Sarvaraj Singh of helping the BJP on several occasions, Mr Ram Gopal Yadav assailed the rebels for targeting Amar Singh and said that the ordinary party worker accepted him as “leader” of the party.

He alleged that Balram Singh Yadav was toeing BJP line as he was apprehending a CBI inquiry into certain matters when he was Union Mines Minister. These rebels have also received money from the BJP, he alleged.

The SP leaders were also critical of the role allegedly being played by Union Minister and JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav and his party General Secretary K.C. Tyagi for creating problems within the Samajwadi Party.

On the demand made by the rebels that there should be thorough probe by the CBI or an MPs’ Committee into the assets of the SP leaders, Amar Singh said that he had already submitted the list of his assets to the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Lok Sabha Speaker.

Water crisis feared in Nohar-Bhadra
Our Correspondent

Hanumangarh, December 24
Fear has arisen in Nohar-Bhadra tehsil of the district of a possible shortage of water for drinking and irrigation because of changes made in the grouping of canals to facilitate water supply in Haryana.

The Amar Singh branch of Bhakhra in Bhadra was kept in group ‘B’ of the Kishengarh branch of Haryana. Following this arrangement, water was to be supplied in the tehsil on December 13, but the Haryana Irrigation Department has shifted the Amar Singh branch to group ‘A’ which is at third place on priority.

Sources disclosed that against a share of 345 cu, only 245 — 270 cu of water was flown to the area in the first rotation, due to which water could not reach all distributors.

The sources in the Waterworks Department say because the water supply has been closed, there will be shortage of drinking water in the area. The Bhadra headwork has a capacity of 1,28,000 kilolitres but the supply at present being given is less than half of this share.

The sources disclosed water was not available at the Rajpura headworks from where supply was given to 17 villages. They said arrangements would be made in those villages which had tubewells.

Officials of the Waterworks Department have apprised the District Collector about the situation. They said to make alternative arrangements, it was necessary that electricity supply be given for 16 to 17 hours in the tehsils so that tubewells could be run.Top
