BJP likely to take on Cong at Yamunanagar Chandigarh, December 27 An indication to this effect was given by the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, while addressing his party workers at Pehowa today. He reportedly remarked that though the BJP was not in a position to win the Yamunanagar seat, yet he would not like to break the alliance with the party which was ruling at the Centre for merely one seat. The state unit of the BJP, too, has started the process of identifying the possible candidates from the industrial town, which has never returned the INLD candidate. It has either been the BJP or the Congress from here. The Haryana BJP President, Mr Rattan Lal Kataria, told TNS on the phone that a three-member team, comprising the party’s Vice-President, Mr Atam Prakash Manchanda, and two General Secretaries, Mr Om Prakash Dhankar and Mr Vir Kumar Yadav, would visit Yamunanagar tomorrow to ascertain the situation there as well as to know the views of the local workers. The three-member team would submit its report to the nine-member election committee headed by Mr Kataria. The Election Committee’s report would be sent to the party high command for a final decision. It suits Mr Chautala if the BJP contests the byelection. In case the BJP wins the seat, the Chief Minister can rightfully claim credit. But if the BJP loses the seat, the discredit will be entirely its own. Moreover, observers feel that the way the BJP has taken a firm stand against parties like the Trinamool Congress and the PMK, which deserted it in the hope of making gains in the Assembly elections in their respective states has wisened Mr Chautala, who believes that it pays to be on the right side of the Central Government. However, the Congress is yet to initiate the process of identifying its candidate. |
House tax: BJP divided over Faridabad exclusion Faridabad, December 27 The leader of the BJP Legislature Party in the state Assembly, Mr Krishan Pal Gurjar, had recently condemned the new policy and threatened to start an agitation if Faridabad was not included in the amended framework. Other local leaders of the party had also criticised the “dual” policy. The state government had stated that all districts, excluding Faridabad, would have the new tax structure whereas Faridabad would continue with the tax structure announced earlier. Residents have already expressed their unhappiness with the decision they claim that the house tax has gone up many times and it was not possible for them to pay the tax. Residents welfare associations and leaders of other parties, including the Congress, have also condemned the hike and described the move as unjustified and illegal. Senior BJP leaders Ram Bilas Sharma and Pradip Jain described the decision as improper, but hoped that the “anomaly” would be removed soon. At a function held here yesterday, Mr Sharma remarked that it could be a clerical mistake. However, Mr Gurjar said a memorandum would be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner on January 5. No other state-level leader of the BJP has come out openly on the issue so far. Mr Jain, who was here recently, reportedly said a hard stance on the issue might not be possible as the party was a coalition partner in the government. |
Injured farmers must be
compensated: Hooda Chandigarh, December 27 Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, chief of the Haryana unit of the party, said he visited the village one day after the incident and found that about 50 persons were injured in the firing. “ They must be given compensation of Rs 2 lakh each”, Mr Hooda said. He said a general body meeting of the PCC, held here yesterday, had passed a resolution condemning the lathi charge and firing by the state police on farmers at Kandela village in Jind district. The resolution demanded payment of Rs 2 lakh as compensation to each of the injured farmers and sought action against the police officials who ordered the firing. Responding to the issue of pending electricity arrears of the farmers, which resulted in the clash between farmers and police on the fateful evening, Mr Hooda went on to say that the arrears should be waived off. “ Arrears amounting to as much as Rs 1.5 lakh was pending against some of the farmers. They simply would not be able to pay such an amount”, he said. “But if the arrears were waived off, what would happen to those farmers who had already paid their pending dues. Should they be returned their money “, questions such as these asked by the reporters prompted Mr Hooda to say that the issue must be “settled” by the government. “The phenomenon of accumulated bills was a creation of the INLD which had asked the farmers not to pay their electricity bills when it was in the opposition and Congress was in power”, Mr Hooda said, squarely blaming the INLD for the current crisis. He said the government was taking recourse to selective action against defaulting villages so that there was no large-scale protest against the government move. Moving on to the issue of Yamunanagar byelection, Mr Hooda alleged that names of a large number of bogus voters were being enrolled in the electoral list while names of some genuine voters were being left out. He said he had asked Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewale, former PCC chief, to constitute a committee and look into the matter. He said the party would put up a strong candidate in Yamunanagar and retain the seat for the Congress. |
