Asking his party to “prepare the nation in close cooperation with all other parties-ruling or Opposition” for a determined fight against Islamabad-sponsored cross-border terrorism”, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said today India would do its “utmost to avoid a war” with Pakistan.

India today rejected Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s overtures suggesting a meeting between him and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in Kathmandu next week on the margins of the SAARC summit.

Govt strategy to emerge winner

The Vajpayee government is working on a strategy to win battle against Pakistan without a war. It was against this backdrop that the External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh yesterday handed over to US Ambassador Robert D. Blackwill a list of 30 hardcore terrorists based in Pakistan whose custody India has demanded.

Madhvendra takes over as Navy chief

Admiral Madhvendra Singh today took over as the new Chief of Naval Staff from Admiral Sushil Kumar, who retired today after completing a successful three-year tenure.

Fog engulfs region; mishaps claim 10 lives
Chandigarh, December 29
A thick blanket of fog for the second consecutive day today threw normal life out of gear causing disruptions in rail, road and air traffic in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh even as cold wave sweeping the region continued unabated. Indian Airlines and Jet Airways flights from Delhi to this city had to be cancelled due to dense fog, official sources said.
