At a high-level meeting of senior police officers here today, security measures in the Kashmir valley were reviewed in view of the growing tension along the Indo-Pakistan border. The police and security agencies have already been put on high alert following the December 13 strike by suspected militants on the Parliament House in New Delhi.

Seven militants among 12 killed
CRPF Commandant has narrow escape

Seven militants, two members of a family and a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member, were among 12 persons killed in separate incidents since last evening in Jammu and Kashmir where a CRPF Commandant escaped unhurt in a militant attack.

A police spokesman said militants sprayed bullets on a CRPF vehicle at Nangila in Jammu region’s Kathua district last night.

The CRPF personnel retaliated forcing the militants to flee, the spokesman said, adding that the Commandant and other CRPF men, who were on their way to Machedi from Billawar, had a narrow escape.

Six militants were killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Kacharbara-Merot in Poonch district last evening. Arms and ammunition, including four AK rifles, were seized from the slain militants.

In another gunbattle between militants and security forces at Zanthal-Kanthi in Doda district, militant Mohammad Ilyas, alias Jamsheed, was killed, the spokesman said.

Militants shot dead two members of a family — a man and his son — in their village near Budhal in Rajouri district of Jammu region.

In the same district, a VDC member, Gulshan Kumar, was killed by militants in his house at Nerojal-Thanamandi, the spokesman said.

He said militants gunned down two activists of the Hizbul Mujahideen, who were released recently, at Kaneera-Wager in Badgam and at Khillen in Pulwama last night.

Security forces busted a militant hideout during search operations in Poonch district and arrested 13 persons on charges of harbouring militants.

Two militants were apprehended by security forces during search operations in Kupwara.

One civilian was killed and 12 others were wounded when some militants hurled a grenade in the Hari market in Jammu city this evening. The police said two wounded persons were critical and battling for life in Jammu Medical College.

According to the police, the militants had the historic Raghunath temple as their target but finding that the temple was well guarded. They hurled the grenade at the shopping centre. In the explosion many shops suffers damage.

The police immediately cordoned off the area and manhunt is on for the killers. PTI, TNS

Police top brass review security steps in valley

At a high-level meeting of senior police officers here today, security measures in the Kashmir valley were reviewed in view of the growing tension along the Indo-Pakistan border. The police and security agencies have already been put on high alert following the December 13 strike by suspected militants on the Parliament House in New Delhi.

The meeting, presided over by the Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir Range, Mr K. Rajendra Kumar, was attended by various DIGs and SSPs of the six districts falling in the valley. Issues related to security and safety of the public in case of any eventuality were also discussed.

“We need to be more alert in view of war cries on both sides of the border”, a senior police officer told TNS here this evening. He said the review was necessary to check any designs of the separatist militant groups or anti-national elements.

Meanwhile, security arrangements have been further tightened across the valley and around vital installations in Srinagar city.
