Over 50 teams for b’ball nationals

Ludhiana, February 18
More than 50 teams, including those from Services and Railways will take part in the 52nd Senior National Basketball Championship for men and women to be held here at the Guru Nanak Sports Complex from March 5 to 12, according to a press note issued by Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association (PBA).

Teams will be divided into five groups in the men’s section and four in the women’s section. The matches will be played on league-cum-knockout basis and more than 110 matches will be conducted during this championship. Matches will be played in two indoor halls and on two outdoor courts. An electronic scoreboard will be used in the indoor hall.

Ludhiana has played host to the Senior National Basketball Championship on three occasions earlier also. The inaugural edition of the national championship was held here in 1951 and Ludhiana played host again in 1982 and then in 1994. Besides, pre-Asian championships for men in 1971 and 1979 and the Junior National Championship in 1992 were also held at Ludhiana.

Amritsar judokas reign supreme

Amritsar judokas emerged overall champions in the boys as well the girls sections of the Punjab state junior championship which concluded at Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today.

Amritsar lads garnered 33 points while girls secured 27 points to annex the team titles. Hosts Ludhiana with 13 points in the boys section and 22 points in the girls section, finished runners-up.

Amritsar judokas won five gold medals out of 10 which were at stake today. Ludhiana and Patiala shared two gold each while Hoshiarpur clinched one gold. Mr T.C. Gupta, President, Punjab Judo Association, distributed the prizes.

Boys: 40 kg.: 1 Parven Kumar (Ldh), 2 Nitish (Gdp), 3 Akashdeep (Asr); 45 kg.: 1 Rohit Kumar (Asr), 2 Bhupinder Singh (Ldh), 3 Vikas Kumar (Ptl) and Jatinder (Moga). 50 kg.: 1 Ganesh (Ptl), 2 Gurvinder Singh (Asr), 3 Iqbal (Nwhr) and Sachin (Mansa); 55 kg.: 1 Rajesh Kumar (Ldh), 2 Surinder (Ptl), 3 Dalbahadur (Ptl) and Vipan (Gdp);

60kg.: 1 Harpinder Singh Asr), 2 Navdeep Chana (Hsp), 3 Amandeep Singh Asr) and Ali Mohamad of (Ldh); 66 kg.: 1 Harjit Singh (Asr), 2 Raman Kumar (Asr), 3 Paramjit (Moga) and Malkit Singh (Ptl); 73 kg.: 1 Shamsher Singh (Ptl), 2 Varinder Singh (Ldh), 3 Gurpreet Singh (Asr) and Sukhdeep Singh (Mansa).

(Girls): 57 kg.: 1 Harpreet (Asr), 2 Harpreet (Ldh), 3 Sarbjit (Hsp) and Charanjit (Gdp); 63 kg.: 1 Baljit (Asr), 2 Harsumit (Ldh), 3 Harpreet (Ldh); Plus 63 kg.: 1 Rashim (Hsp), 2 Ruchika (Ropar), 3 Ramandeep (Ldh) and Harpreet (Jal).
