Q I have Celeron 766 processor, 20 GB HDD, Intel chipset motherboard, 64 MB RAM. I want to know how can I mix two video files for this and what software or hardware is needed. Please tell me in detail.

Kuldeep Goyal, Sardulgarh

A If you are sourcing the video file from an outside source like Camcorder, VCR etc. then you may require additional hardware Video Capture card. However, if the video file is already in the computer then you would not require any additional hardware for basic video mixing. Though for advance technologies you may require other hardware. Now as far as the software is concerned, you can download trial version of MULTIQUENCE v2.50 from www.goldwave.com/multiquence/index.html. Using this software you can mix audio/video files and can also do editing. This is good software and is also quite effective.

Q I have an assembled PC with P III processor, 56 KBPS Motorola modem, 64 MB RAM,52X MAX CD ROM, and Windows Me as OS. I have been facing some problem for the last few days. When I start my computer, It says "A Device file that is specified in the system.ini file is damaged. You may need to run Windows. If the file is used by another software, then you will have to reinstall that software". I do not understand which software is making the problem. Secondly the typing speed of my computer has slowed down very much. That means, when I type a sentence, I have to wait for a minute to see it appearing on the screen.

A The problem mentioned by you is actually very critical and needs to be addressed carefully. The first and the best option of solving this problem are to reinstall Windows again. However, if you do not wish to reinstall the Window, then you may have to do an extensive exercise. Normally this error refers to a *.vxd file (filename.VXD), which is located in C:\ WINDOWS\ SYSTEM\ VMM32\ filename.VXD. Following could be the files which might be causing this error. NTKERN.VXD, VNETSUP.VXD, NWLINK.VXD, NWREDIR.VXD, NSCL.VXD, NDIS.VXD, NDIS2SUP.VXD, VNETBIOS.VXD, IFSMGR.VXD, IOS.VXD, VCOMM.VXD, VCOND.VXD, VDD.VXD, VDEFMCPD.VXD, VMOUSE.VXD, VMPOLL.VXD, VSD.VXD, VTDAPI.VXD, VWIN32.VXD. You can hunt down these files individually and can resolve this problem. However, instead of specifically dealing with the problem, the best option is to reinstall the windows.

Q I have a system with following configuration: "Intel P-III, 128 RAM, 20 GB HDD (Seagate) having 4 partitions with 5 GB each, 1.44 MB FD (Samsung), Keyboard (TVS-Gold), ATX Cabinet, 52x ROM (Samsung), 14" Monitor (Samsung), Logitech Mouse, 810-DTC AZZA Motherboard, 52x Motorola Modem, Dual booting with WIN-98 SE and LINUX. I have install WIN-98 on C drive and LINUX on D drive. My problem is My WIN-98 shows P-II on the other hand LINUX shows P-III. What’s the problem? I had installed different WIN-98 but the results are same. Even WIN-XP shows P-III. I even format my C: drive and installed new Windows but in vain. Also there is no problem in Device Manager. Please suggest me a good answer.

Gaurav Dhiman, Chandigarh

A This is a known problem with the earlier versions of Windows like Windows ’95 or Windows ’98 (not Windows ’98 SE). This does not affect the performance of your PC in anyway. Despite the fact it shows wrong information, it will not affect any of the features of Pentium –III, you would be able to take full advantage of the new 3D instructions in the Pentium III as long as you have DirectX version 6.1 or better installed on your system. However for removing this problem, you can upgrade your system to Windows 98 Second edition or higher version.

Q I have a Yahoo! account and configured my Outlook Express to access mail from Yahoo! As from April 24, I heard this facility would have to be paid for. That is if we want to access our Yahoo! mail with OE. Can I configure Outlook Express to send and receive mail from Rediffmail or Indiatimes?

Reny Thomas

A You have learnt it correctly that Yahoo! mail would no longer be POP-enabled mail that means that you would not be able to configure it in your e-mail client for receiving the mails. Regarding your second query, the e-mail services mentioned by you are Web-based mails and cannot be accessed through POP e-mail client. Therefore you would not be able to configure then in Outlook Express to send and receive e-mails.

Q I have an assembled PC (Pentium 200, 32 MB, 2+4 GB), Logitech Scroll mouse, Win ’98 OS, SIS 6215, Rockwell/Wave artist soundcard. I have the following problem. I am unable to play games like road Rash & even games like Speedkar, Nitro (PLBM games from VGA installer CD) don't work. The system hangs at the start of the game and desktop looks as on 256 colour settings. The system has to be rebooted then. The problem is being caused by the Adlib &SoundBlaster driver. If it's removed from system properties then games work fine, but without sound. But on next reboot, Windows load the driver and it has to be removed again in order to play game. Windows games like Solitaire, entertainment Pack games work fine. I have installed Windows, Sound drivers and VGA from original installer CDs.

A It is clear from the description of your problem that the driver for your sound card has become corrupt. You must first uninstall it and then reinstall in order to solve this problem. Ideally you should also update the driver simultaneously. This sometimes happens with the installation of some programs mainly high end involving latest graphics, the sound codecs and drivers get disturbed. So, either you should uninstall that program or you should reinstall the sound driver. Normally, uninstalling also does not help always as the corrupted sound driver does not get rectified by itself and even then also the sound driver has to be reinstalled. So, the best solution is to reinstall the sound driver after removing it completely from your system first. However, you should be extra careful about the choice of driver, as you should choose only the correct driver.
