Nerd who started at 5
and still not Breathless
SHANKAR Mahadevan was born in a Chembur, Mumbai. Shankar studied in a school named O L P S, and he did engineering in computer science after that. He got exposed to the right musical circle since childhood and started playing veena when he was five. His first solo performance was when he was 11. Renowned gurus of music taught him the classical music. Guru T.R. Balamani was his main teacher, who taught him Carnatic music. He also got training from Late Tara Devi and the great Marathi composer, Srinivas Khale, treated him like a son.
Shankar is a software engineer. He worked at Oracle Corporation for some time. But he gave up the job for music.
With the help of his friends, which included Sivamani, Louis Banks, Zakir Hussain and Ranjit Barot he began to sing and compose for documentaries and advertisements.
Shankar got his first film break in the film Muhaafiz. He sang ghazal in the film. He got more assignments but most of them were to sing in the background as a supporting singer for songs sung by regular singers. He sang for films like Ghatak (Koi Aaye To Le Aaye), Gupt, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram), O Darling Yeh Hai India, Aar Ya Paar, China Gate (for Amrish Puri in ‘Chamma Chamma’), Duplicate, Manchalaa, Pardes, Sapnay, Dillagi etc.
Gradually he got some more songs to sing as main singer. His classical songs for the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam proved his singing capability.
Shankar favourite western groups are Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, Bobby McFerin and Weather Report.
