New Delhi, December 30
In a significant move, the Centre today shifted Uttaranchal Governor Surjit Singh Barnala to Andhra Pradesh.

A Rashtrapati Bhawan press note said here that former Rajya Sabha Secretary General Sudarshad Agarwal had been appointed as the new Governor of Uttaranchal replacing Mr Barnala.

Mr Barnala had served earlier as the Tamil Nadu Governor.

Mr Barnala takes the place of Mr C Rangarajan, who has been appointed Chairman of the 11th Finance Commission.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said Mr Barnala would serve the remainder of his term in Andhra Pradesh. He was appointed the first Governor of the newly formed state of Uttaranchal in November 2000.

Mr Agarwal had retired from the Rajya Sabha in the early 90s.
