Haryana eves register win

Ludhiana, February 7
Haryana eves routed the Rest of Punjab 5-1, while in the men’s section, Friends Club of Roomi drubbed Speed Fund Academy, Ludhiana 5-2 and Bibi Surjit Kaur Sports Club of Jarkhar recorded 1-0 victory on the first day of the 17th Mata Sahib Kaur Gold Cup Hockey and Bibi Surjit Kaur Memorial Silver Cup Kabaddi tournament at Jarkhar village, about 20 km from here, today.

For Haryana, Surinder Kaur struck twice, while Kiran Bala, Jagjit Kaur and Gurpreet scored once. Amanjot Kaur reduced the margin for the Rest of Punjab. In the men’s section, Gurspinder Kaur scored the lone goal to help Bibi Surjit Kaur Club emerge winner 1-0. In the match between Friends Club and Speed Fund Academy, Karamjit scored a brace for Roomi, while other scorers were Manjit Singh, Gurpreet and Surinder Singh. For the losers, Gurpreet and Sukhpreet Kaur scored one goal each

In kabaddi (52 kg), 12 teams took part and in the final Kaunke beat Harkiratgarh 14-9 to lift the trophy. In volleyball, Chak Kalan outplayed Jassowal 25-16, 22-25 and 25-18.

In kabaddi (57 kg), Bagaa beat Ranno, Jassowal beat Shankar, Bilga beat Sahnewal, Kupp beat Kaindh and Harkiratgarh beat Lalton Kalan.

In dog race, Nikku of Inder Pal Dhaliwal came out triumphant, while Jaanbaaz, owned by Thanedar Dyal Singh, finished runner-up. The third and fourth positions went to Rocky of Babbu Jhan and Fireman of Sarabjit Narangwal.

Earlier, Mr Malkit Singh Birmi, MLA, inaugurated the tournament, while Mr Gurkirat Singh Kotli presided over the inaugural function.

Shanti Tara College wins : Hosts Shanti Tara College, Ahmedgarh, began their title hunt with a comprehensive 82-run victory over the Royal Cricket Club in the 2nd Sabina Cup Cricket Tournament at Ahmedgarh yesterday.

Batting first after winning the toss, Shanti Tara College scored 193 runs after losing seven wickets in 16 overs. Harpreet made 53 runs off 29 balls while Deepak and Raman contributed 31 runs each and Gurmukh Singh chipped in with 19 runs.

In reply, the Royal Club made 111 runs in their quota of 16 overs after losing seven wickets.

Earlier, Mr Anil Kumar, Executive Director, Shreyans Paper Mills, inaugurated the tournament in which 12 teams were taking part. He announced a grant of Rs 21,000 for the college to promote sports activities.

Doraha
Athletics meet: The annual athletic meet of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, will be organised on February 10 and 11.

According to Prof. R.S. Pali, Head, Physical Education Department, the athletic meet of boys will be organised on February 10. The meet will be inaugurated by Ms Indira Bhatia, Principal, Government College, Karamsar. The girls’ athletic meet will be organised on February 11 and the inauguration will be done by Mr Paramjit Singh Saroo, SSP Khanna.

Ahmedgarh
Sabina Cup: Second Sabina Cup Tournament was inaugurated by Mr Anil Kumar, Executive Director, SIL at Shanti Tara College yesterday. Mr Swaran Singh, president, Master Tara Singh College, was the chief guest. In the opening match played on the first day host team beat the Royal Cricket Club Ludhiana, by 82 runs. The second match played between the Friends Club, Malerkotla, and the New Ludhiana Club, ended in a draw. Both clubs score 96 runs in 16 overs. The Malerkotla Club later defeated the New Ludhiana Club when five over match was played to break the tie.

In another match the G.M. Cricket Club defeated the team of the local Mahatma Gandhi Senior Secondary School. Mr Amarjit Sidhu, director of the college, thanked Mr Anil and Mr Swaran Singh who had donated Rs 21,000 and 11,000 respectively.
