NTIGUA and Barbuda comprises of three islands of the Lesser Antilles, situated in Eastern Caribbean Sea. St Kittis and Nevis islands lie to its west, while Montserrat and Guadeloupe are located to its south.Covering 440 square kms, Boggey Peak is its highest point, rising 402 mts above sea level. There are no significant rivers on the islands.
Columbus landed in Antigua in 1493, and the British colonised it in 1632. It attained independence on November 1, 1981 and its present form of government is a constitutional monarchy with British-style parliament. St. John's, the capital, is also its largest and principal city.
The literacy rate in the English-speaking country is stated to be over 90 per cent. Anglican and Roman Catholic are the principal religions.
Antigua and Barbuda's gross domestic income is estimated to be 645 million dollars with the real growth rate being around 3 per cent. The per capita income is approximately 9450 dollars.
With arable land accounting for about 18 per cent of its land area, Antigua and Barbuda's principal agricultural product is cotton. Tourism is the major industry.
Antigua and Barbuda exports clothing, rum and lobsters, while it imports fuel, food and machinery.
A member of the Commonwealth of Nations,, its trading partners include the United Kingdom, Canada, USA, Caribbean Community and Common Market members.
