Law institute stone laid

Ludhiana, October 5
The Punjab Governor, Justice O.P. Verma, has stressed upon the need to bring about substantial improvement in the quality of law education. He was addressing a function after laying the foundation stone of the building of University Institute of Laws, in here today.

Justice Verma, while expressing concern over the decline in the quality of law education, said lawyers, judges and Judicial officers had to tackle the complicated legal problems, and this required quality education. The Governor said the legal procedure had become cumbersome and it was very difficult for the ordinary people to get justice. He said the knowledge of law would be important in the coming years as our social and financial problems were increasing and the prevailing knowledge on legal matters would be come irrelevant in future.

He also stressed upon the need for simplification of the legal procedures to make it respondent within the reach the ordinary man.

Dr. K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor Panjab University, stated that Ludhiana was the fourth city to have such an institution. He said at the institute postgraduate diploma course in export management would also be started. He said Panjab University would request the Government and the Governor to give the land near the PU extension library for the development of the law college. Lala Lajpat Rai, MP, also addressed the function and sought an improvement in the standard of law education in the country.

Among others present on the occasion were Prof R.P. Gupta, Director, R.C. Ludhiana, Mr Anurag Verma Deputy Commissioner, Mr Narinder Pal Singh, SSP, and some senators of Panjab University.

Mr Balwinder Goel, member, Punjab and Haryana Bar Council, appealed to the Governor to sanction the land which was vacated after the shifting of old courts.

The Director, PU Regional Centre, proposed a vote of thanks.
