Easy wins for GCW, Khalsa Club girls

Hosts Government College for Women and the Khalsa Club recorded thumping victories to begin their campaign on a sound note in the Ludhiana District Women Hockey Tournament at the
Government College ground here today. Government College routed Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar Chowk, 5-0 while the Khalsa Club trounced Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, 4-0. Government College girls went into the lead through Sarbjot in the initial minutes of the encounter. Kawaldeep Kaur consolidated the lead to make it 2-0. After changing ends, Kawaldeep struck twice to read it 4-0. Jyoti sounded the board to complete the rout 5-0. In the second match, Khalsa Club players drew the first blood midway through the first half when Sandeep found the target. Immediately, Sapandeep pumped in a goal to cement the lead 2-0. They enhanced the lead 3-0 through Chandni. In the second half, Sapandeep managed to breeze past rivals’ defence to roll the ball into the net and helped her team to wrap up the issue 4-0. In another match, Nankana Sahib Public School, Kila Raipur, thrashed Sports Club, Ludhiana, 6-2. The main architects of the Kila Raipur outfit’s win were Amandeep Kaur and Mandeep Kaur who chipped in with three and two goals, respectively, while Kanwapreet Kaur accounted for one goal. Ekta and Jaspreet with one goal each reduced the margin for Sports Club. Earlier, Ms Kusum Ahuja, Principal, Government College, inaugurated the tournament in which 10 teams were taking part. Mr Sohan Lal Lotey, District Sports Officer, Ludhiana, Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, along with coaches of the Sports Department, Punjab, attended the inaugural function. Ms Surinder Dhir, former Deputy Director, (Sports) welcomed the chief guest and introduced her with the participating teams.
Boxing trialsKHANNA:
Trials for the selection of Ludhiana district junior boxing team will be held on February 7 at A.S. College, Khanna, according to J.S. Garewal, boxing coach. Mr Grewal said here today that 11-member team would be selected. The selected team will participated in the junior Punjab State Boxing Championship to be held in Ferozepore from February 10 to 12. All junior boxers born between 1986 and 1987 of the district could contact him in morning of February 10.
