Dreaming of the moon

IN almost all cultures, the moon, sun, fire and water, etc. are revered. The spread of scientific education does not seem to have countered superstition. Indians have traditionally believed that moon affects the health of living beings. According to the Vedas, there is direct correlation between the water content of the body and the moon and blood pressure and the moon. In many cases the position of the moon is thought to aggravate certain psychiatric problems. To see the moon in one’s dream is supposed to be a good omen. It foretells unexpected happiness and success for the dreamer. If an unmarried dreams of a full moon it foretells marriage. A new moon is supposed to be a very lucky symbol for all, be it a housewife, a businessman, a farmer or a widow. It spells success in every aspect of the person’s life.

According to western thought, seeing a moon in your dreams foretells love and success in business. Should the moon seem unusual and misshapen then it spells disappointments. An eclipsed moon indicates major disappointments for the family. Seeing the new moon means that prosperity and love shall come your way. To see a red moon spells disagreements and quarrels with those around you.

Psychoanalytically speaking, the moon is symbolic of the emotional side of a person’s personality. It represents love and romance. Thus to dream of the moon indicated the desire to get in touch with this aspect of your personality. If a man dreams of the moon, it means that he is coming to terms with certain uncomfortable aspects of his relationships with women. If a woman sees such a dream it is symbolic of her relationships with other women. The moon is also representative of the intuitive aspect of one’s self. It could also symbolise the darker and unknown side of the self.

A 32-year-old woman would dream of the moon. It would either be in eclipse or it would be full. The eclipsed moon indicates a lack of self-confidence or even depression. The woman is, perhaps, a pessimist. Seeing both a full as well as an eclipsed moon indicates that even if things are going right in her life, she remains a pessimist. It could also indicate a lack of perseverance on her part to achieve what she desires. All these are symptoms of a depressive personality.
