The IITians
by Sandipan Deb. Viking, Penguin.
Pages 375. Rs 425
THIS is the story of the Indian Institutes of
Technology and their alumni whose contribution to the modern world has
been phenomenal. Sandipan Deb of IIT Kharagpur, who later studied
management at IIM Calcutta, before switching over to journalism, has
travelled widely to interview the IITians and has recorded their
experiences. It is well-known that the IITs are indeed unique
institutions and the IITians have taught the world a thing or two, about
technology and management, but what they received from their alma mater
is, perhaps, not known. The book fills in these gaps by recounting the
success stories of distinguished IIT alumni. Achievements of famous
persons like Rajat Gupta, former worldwide MD of McKinsey, Rono Dutta,
former president United Airlines, Rakesh Gangwal, former president US
Airways, B.K. Syngal, former chairman VSNL and N.R. Naryana Murthy,
Chairman Infosys and others are a testimonial to the excellence of the
institutions which groomed them. The book documents more than 50
successful IITians who are entrepreneurs, managers, scientists and
professors.
Had the author also interviewed an equal number of
IITians who have not been so successful in terms of making money and a
name, perhaps it would have given a clearer picture of an ‘average’
IITian. Some useful lessons could have been learnt from the stories of
these individuals.
IITians deserve all the praise for their contribution, whether in
India or abroad. This unique record of the experience of IITians also
provides an insight into the functioning of the IITs, the challenges
they face and what needs to be done. It is extremely useful for those
who call the shots in IITs and such other institutions.
