DSP among six cops killed
Bid on MPís life in Doda

Jammu, July 2
Member of Parliament Lal Singh and Congress MLA G.M. Saroori had a providential escape today when militants blew up a police vehicle escorting their motorcade at Sangampatti in Kishtwar area of Doda district, killing six police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Udhampur-Doda) Satveer Gupta said militants detonated an IED when the police vehicle ran over it at about 2.30 pm. Mr Singh was on his way from Chatroo to Kishtwar to address a public rally.

ďA minute or two later, another explosion rocked the area,Ē he added.

Mr Gupta said the vehicle carrying both leaders had passed the area minutes before the explosion. In the second incident there were no casualties, the DIG said, adding a bullet-proof police vehicle was partially damaged.

As panic gripped the area after the twin blasts, Mr Singh and Mr Saroori were airlifted to Jammu. The injured were admitted to Jammu Medical College Hospital.

The victims were identified as sub-divisional police officer, Kishtwar, DSP Mushtaq Mir of Rajouri, Police Officer Raj Kumar and SPOs Ghulam Rasool (driver), Anil Kumar, Kailash and Sher Singh.

Police Officer Sham Lal and SPO Paramjit Singh were injured in the attack.

The exchange of fire lasted for an hour. Additional companies of security forces, including men of the Rashtriya Rifles, were rushed to the spot.

Confusion gripped the village during the exchange of fire. Reports said the militants escaped in the forest belt when they found that they were being trapped in the heavy gunfire from the police.

In another incident in the upper reaches of Surankot in Poonch sector four Armymen were wounded, three of them critically, when a truck in which they were travelling was smashed in an IED blast at Chanan Draba village.

The wounded were shifted to the Army hospital in Surankot. Additional troops were rushed to the spot and the area was cordoned off.

Srinagar: Two boys and three infiltrators were among six persons killed in separate incidents in Kashmir valley since yesterday, while suspected militants damaged household goods and a vehicle of two PDP workers in Anantnag district last evening.

Three infiltrators were killed close to the LoC in an encounter with security forces in Machil sector of Kupwara district today, police here said. Three AK rifles were recovered from the slain militants, whose identity was yet to be ascertained.

Two boys Mohammad Yasin Khan, 13, and Bilal Ahmad Khan, 10, were killed when the grenade they were fiddling with exploded at Zagoo Khairian in Beerwa area of Budgam district today.

An SPO or counter-insurgent, Mehboob Ahmad Khan was killed while a security force jawan was injured in an encounter with militants in Kandi sector of Kupwara district today.
