Triple murder case: accused’s parents, brother also booked
Ludhiana, July 6
The triple murder case that has rocked the city during the past two days took a surprise turn today when the Basti Jodhewal police booked the parents and a brother of the accused gunman Jarnail Singh for conspiring the crime. There was tension again in the New Subash Nagar locality as a large number of persons gathered to attend the cremation of the third victim, Pulinder Nishad, a migrant from Bihar.

The Railway Budget, which the Union Railway Minister presented today in the Lok Sabha claiming it was pro-poor Budget evoked mixed response in the industrial hub of the state with many people terming it as unrealistic and devoid of adequate resources for massive plans of infrastructure development and gauge conversion.

Harassed by husband, woman tries to end life
Ludhiana, July 6
Rekha (27), daughter of a Haibowal-based cycle mechanic, allegedly harassed by her husband, his elder brother and sister-in-law, set herself ablaze on July 3. She is oscillating between life and death at DMC Hospital. Doctors fear that she might not survive as almost all her organs are burnt and she is in coma. The shocked family is, however, hoping for a miracle.

Inquiry ordered into bribe charge
Ludhiana, July 6
The city police today ordered an inquiry against a Head Constable for allegedly demanding bribe from an undertrial at bakshi khana in the new district courts complex here today for allowing him to call up his relatives.

The Punjab Police has been harping on the concept of community policing but a response from the public is found wanting. There has been a spate in robbery and snatching incidents in the city but people have just refused to take precautions advised by the cops.

Undertrials protest against water shortage
Ludhiana, July 6
The city police today had to rush additional personnel to the bakshikhana in the new district courts complex to control 150-odd undertrials who were protesting against the non-supply of adequate potable water.

Book on city’s history released
Ludhiana, July 6
The last 100 years' history of the city, compiled in a Punjabi book "Ludhiana bolda hai", written by Shiromani Sahitkar Dr Atam Hamrahi, was released at a function organised by the Vishwa Punjabi Sabhyacharak Manch, here today.

PWD employees hold rally
Ludhiana, July 6
In protest against the arrest of officials of the PWD in the alleged bitumen scam, hundreds of employees of the department organised a rally in front of the main gate of their office here today. The dharna continued for two hours.

Two dowry harassment cases registered
Ludhiana, July 6
The Shimla Puri police yesterday registered a case under Sections 420, 406,498-A, 506 and 120-B of the IPC on the statement of Ms Baljit Kaur, who lives on the Ludhiana Road at Raikot, against her husband Satnam Singh, father-in-law Nirmal Singh, mother-in-law Nirmal Kaur, brother-in-law Gurpreet Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur, who live in street number 6 of Shimla Puri.

10-day NSS camp concludes
Doraha, July 6
A 10-day NSS camp for girls of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, concluded here yesterday. Seventy-five volunteers participated. During the camp a team of doctors and scientists of Punjab Agricultural University educated the volunteers and farmers from nearby areas.

Gurjant Singh New Principal for Shanti Tara College
Ludhiana, July 6
Mr Gurjant Singh was appointed Principal of Master Shanti Tara College, Ahmedgarh, yesterday. Earlier, he was the Vice-Principal of Sher Gill Memorial College, Mukandpur College.

An impressive function was held at PAU here today to honour Dr S. S. Johl on his receiving the Padma Bhushan. Presiding over the function, the Vice- Chancellor, Dr K. S. Aulakh, said the award was a great honour and was the result of Dr Johl's transparent thinking, policies in favour of the public and hard work which were source of inspiration to all.

Forty piles patients operated upon
Ludhiana, July 6
"Piles is a distressing condition which affect at least one third of human population. Most of the patients are reluctant to take medical advice, resulting in development of complications of this disease."

New ways to treat gastroenteritis discussed
Ludhiana, July 6
Deep Hospital in the city organised a continuing medical education (CME) here last evening to apprise gastroenterologists and other physicians in the region of the new specialised techniques being used to treat the disease.
