Exciting career options for students

Gone are the days when students went in for courses like Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences. The more intelligent ones would opt for medical or engineering courses and the most intelligent would take a shot at IAS.

But now there are a plethora of job-oriented courses offered by various universities. The courses are new, varied and imaginative. Take the case of Gauri, a student, who after passing 12th class, was very disappointed there was no course for providing training to aspiring air hostesses and flight stewards. But from past year an institute of repute has come up in the city that not only trains students for airlines and hospitality business, but also helps them to find good jobs.

For airlines and hospitality business, trainee should have cleared class12 and be physically fit with a pleasing personality, right attitude and a zest for life. The girls should be 5’.2” tall and boys should be 5’.7” tall. They should be between the age group of 17 and 26 years. Students learn communication skills, customer care, first aid during the 500 hours of training.

For higher education, Institute of Chartered Financial Analaysist of India ( ICFAI) Hyderabad, offers courses like Distance MBA, MS (Master in Sciences) in Finance, Accounts, Banking. The classes are held at Government College for Boys.

Other career options available now are time management, business insurance, hospital-waste management etc. City-based colleges are vying to get new courses. Dr Madanjit Kaur Sahota, Principal, Master Tara Singh College, says that every year the college tries to get a new course. This year they have started Textile Designing course. Last year they started Fashion Designing course.

Science students have plenty to choose from, particularly at the bachelor level. They can opt for courses related to industrial chemistry, Information Technology, computer technology. They also have choice from add-on courses like clinical diagnostic techniques, cosmetology, environmental auditing etc. Humanity students can choose from mass communication, travel and tourism, marketing management and personnel management. There are honours courses in e-commerce, accountancy etc.

Other courses include home-cure, nursing, house-keeping, mobile repair, event management. 



Panjab University gives interview schedule

Panjab University, for the convenience of students, has provided a schedule for interviewing the candidates depositing fees on different dates.
Dept of Physics PU Campus M.Sc. (two-year course) 1st year July 12, 2004 at 9.30 am. M.Sc (two-year course) 1st year NRI category July 16, 2004 at 9.30 am. Candidates seeking admission must present themselves in person along with original certificates, supporting documents and necessary fee.

NRI candidates should appear on the basis of the information displayed or given on the site, as they will be called in on the basis of provisional ranking as announced. The merit list has been put on display in the dept as well as placed on website hup;// physics.puchd.ac.in/msco43.

Dept of Geology, campus M.Sc. (Hons School) 1st year July 14, 2004 at 10 am.

Dept of Laws, Chandigarh Interview of candidates of all categories (General and Reserved) except sports and NRI categories in the morning and evening sessions July 9 (Friday) (9 am to 5 pm) excluding the time of lunch break i.e. 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm.

Interview of candidates who have applied for Ludhiana Regional Centre July 10 (Sat) 9 am to 1 pm.

Payment of fee by selected candidates under NRI and Sports categories for admission to LL.B 1st semester is on July 16 (Friday) from 9.30 am to 12 noon.

The schedule for admission to LL.M Part I will be finalised after the declaration of result of LL.B VIth semester by Panjab University as the admission merit is to be done on the basis of the merit of entrance examination, plus the marks of LL.B semester results.



Teachers allege delay in salary

The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union General Secretary Jaswant Singh and co-president R.S. Brar, have alleged that the SGPC-run colleges have salary in arrears. In Guru Nanak College, Budhladha, the salary has not been paid for seven months. The SGPC-run colleges at Daroli Kalan Domeli, Muktsar, Gardhiwala, Garshanker, Anandpur Sahib, Damdama Sahib and Fatehgarh Sahib also have salary in arrears up to three months. Teachers working against unaided posts are not being paid full DA, they alleged.

The leaders said although the government had been releasing less grants, the SGPC and the managements should understand that as per terms of affiliation to various universities, employees should be paid salary by the 10th of every month. They said that leaders of teachers from SGPC-run colleges have written an open letter to candidates of SGPC elections to highlight their problems.
