Drive against cholera continues

Chandigarh, July 9
The health department today continued the prevention and control measures for cholera in the affected areas of labour colony no 5 in Sector 50 here.

Joint sampling of water and collection of stool swabs was carried out in collaboration with a special team deployed by the department of microbiology of the PGI.

Officials of the Health Department along with the team of the PGI collected 47 samples of water for cholera test and 26 stool samples for the detection of the source of infection.

Ambulance services were also provided for persons suffering from the diarrhoea.

The department has decided to start the family prophylactic measures by distributing appropriate medicines to the entire population of the area working at the construction sites.

The Health Department has also taken up the matter with the Deputy Commissioner and the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, emphasising the private contractors to make arrangements for safe water supply at all construction sites. The private contractors may be directed to make arrangements of solid waste disposal and the construction of shallow pit trench latrines at the site to avoid open defecation in the area.

Puneet, Megha win TT titles

Puneet Kumar of DPS, Sector 40, and Meghna of DAV Public School, Sector 8, won the cadet boys and cadet girls singles, respectively, in the 10th Bhavan Hawk’s Chandigarh State Table Tennis Tournament which began at the Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, Chandigarh, here today. The three-day tournament is being organised by Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, under the aegis of the Chandigarh Table Tennis Association.

The results: Cadet boys singles: Pre-quarter finals: Akash Goyal b Sahil Sharma 11-3, 11-4, 11-6; Raghav Mahajan b Kashish 11-3, 11-7, 11-7; Puneet Kumar b Anmol 11-0, 11-1, 11-5; Ranjot Singh b Sahil 15-13, 11-9, 11-5.

Quarterfinals: Akash Goyal b Akshey Aggarwal 11-2, 11-8, 11-9; Puneet Kaur b Nishant Bhardwaj 11-1, 11-1, 11-4; Mayank Kapoor b Ranjot Singh 11-7, 11-4, 11-8; Sumit Chaudhary b Raghav Mahajan 11-9, 11-4, 11-8.

Mayor orders repair of roads

The Mayor, Ms Kamlesh, and the Municipal Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, visited Sector 35 and 36 today to assess the condition of the roads in the area. Looking at the pot-holes and patches on the roads, the Mayor ordered the immediate repair of the roads to the officials concerned.

She also discussed the problem of waterlogging at the roundabouts and asked the officials for correctly lavelling the internal roads. She also said that the tiles should be used on road gullies.

Liquor shops closed tomorrow

The District Magistrate, Mr Arun Kumar, in exercise of such powers as conferred under Section 54 of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, has ordered the closure of liquor shops on July 11 in view of the elections to the SGPC.
