Mehmood dead

Bollywood comedian Mehmood died this morning in sleep at Pennsylvania in the USA, according to reports available here. He was 72.

His body will be brought to Mumbai, his relatives have been quoted as saying. Ali who was born in Mumbai in 1932, acted in over 300 films.

He hailed from a family of Bollywood personalities. His father was Mumtaz Ali, a film and stage actor-cum-dancer while his sister, Minoo Mumtaz, was a character actress.

Mehmood married actress Meena Kumari’s sister Madhu, in the early 1950s. He began by bit roles in films like “Do Bigha Zameen” and “Pyaasa”, but in those days he went unnoticed.

He hit big time in the 1960s with “Sasural” co-starring with Shobha Khote. His other hits included “Gumnaam” with Helen, “Pyar Kiye Jaa”, “Love in Tokyo” and the mega hits “Padosan”, “Aankhen”, and “Bombay to Goa”.
