The Ludhiana chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has welcomed the recent judgement of the Supreme Court that doctors are not liable to be punished until there is gross negligence or the death is intentional. The national vice-president of the IMA, Dr Gursharan Singh, has said the IMA has always been asserting that error in judgement and complications should not be equated with negligence.
He says error in judgement occurs in all professions, but it is fatal in the medical profession. He asserts that the medical profession in India is less commercial and more nobel and charitable. The cost of treatment is perhaps the minimum in India, he has pointed out.
Dr Gursharan Singh has said the IMA has urged the district administration to view pending cases in the light of the Supreme Court judgement.
